Good morning! It's
Friday, January 14, 2005,
and this is your first early morning
Multi-Cultural
briefing.
Fox is responding to complaints from the Council on
American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) about its recent airing of a
24 episode depicting Muslims as terrorists. The network is
providing television stations with public service announcements sponsored
by the council to Fox affiliate stations with the airing decision left to
each individual affiliate. In the episode, an upper-middle class
Muslim family was painted as a sleeper terrorist cell with the mother
murdering to prevent the family from being exposed. "What we
are hoping to do is to try and mitigate the damages of the stereotypes
because it can bring real-life consequences on American Muslims and their
lives here," stated CAIR's spokeswoman, Rabiah Ahmed.
HISPANIC MARKET:
This week Philadelphia-based BroadRelay
Inc. launched a new broadband international entertainment network
named SIVOO!. On the
www.sivoo.com site,
SIVOO's first channel will offer more than 40 Spanish-language films on a
pay-per-view basis with a two-for-one introductory special for the
launch. More movie categories, soap operas and entertainment specials
will be added SIVOO's Spanish-language channel in the future.
Additional material in other languages are in the plans as well.
The FCC has proposed a $28,000 fine against Univision
Radio this week for a prank telephone call that hit the airwaves
without permission of the person receiving the October 18, 2002 call on
the Raul Brindis and Pepito Show. In the unanimous vote, the
commission stated that the airing violated a federal regulation that
requires a broadcaster to inform a person that a conversation is being
aired (maybe it's just me but then how would it be a prank call).
The $28,000 breaks down into $4000 for each of the 7 FM stations that
broadcast the show. To complicate matters, the radio stations were
owned by Hispanic Broadcasting Corp at the time (Univision Communications
Inc. bought the company in 2003). Univision is reviewing the
proposed fine ruling. Univision argued that the show's host did not
need to inform the person as the pranked person was a Hispanic
Broadcasting employee as well as making the case that the stations were
Hispanic Broadcasting-owned at the time. The commission rejected
both defences.
mun2 television will air an interview with Spanish actor Javier

at age 6, Before Night Falls in 2000 and his recent film, The Sea Inside,
to name only a few.

Atlanta on March 3-6 has added another feature to its offerings.

Foundation (working to increase urban youth participation), the “A
Cinematic Tsunami” think tank will provide an official forum for
those involved in many different aspects of the entertainment business to
learn from and interact with each other. More info at

For the first time since Black Enterprise magazine began its
”75 Most Powerful Blacks In Corporate America” list 17 years ago,
two of McDonald's African American execs, Don Thompson and William
Lamar Jr., were recognized for their achievements. The magazine's
February issue acknowledges CEOs or those who have significantly
contributed to generating revenue for major US companies. Don
Thompson is EVP and Innovation Orchestration Leader, Restaurant Solutions
Group, McDonald's Corporation. William Lamar, Jr. is the SVP and chief
marketing officer for McDonald's USA.
Queen Latifah was named as the hostess of the 47th annual
Grammy Awards on February 13. In addition to her hosting
duties, the hip hop superstar will perform at the awards ceremony.
Boxing promoter Don King filed a defamation suit against ESPN for over
$2.5 billion this week. According to his lawyers, a
SportsCentury episode broadcast in May called Don King "a snake oil
salesman, a shameless huckster and worse" and asserted that he
underpaid Muhammad Ali and murdered not only once (he was convicted and
acquitted in 1954) but twice.
INDIAN/ASIAN MARKET:
Actor Amrish Puri passed away this week at
the age of 72. The Indian native actor was famous for his villain
roles both in Bollywood and Hollywood and is best known in America for
his role as Indiana Jones's foe in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
(1984) and Spielberg's Gandhi. He passed away from complications with a
blood clot in his brain.
Imax inked another multi-theater agreement in China with the
Chongqing Land Property Group for 3 large-screen theater sites in
Chongqing (the largest city in the country with over 32 million
inhabitants). This deal will up Imax system's numbers to 22 in
China by 2008.
GAY/LESBIAN MARKET:
MTV Networks' Logo will not see the light of
broadcast until June 30 according to Brian Graden, president of
Logo and president of entertainment for MTV, VH1 and CMT. The new
gay/lesbian-oriented channel was originally set to premiere on February
14. In addition to a desire to hone the channel's creative aspects,
the channel's president is faced with carriage issues with a present
reach of only 3 million homes. By the time the new launch date
arrives, Logo will be available to 10 million subscribers with Comcast,
Time Warner, RCN and Adelphia as possible new carriers. Logo's
original programming will include Noah's Ark, My Fabulous Gay Wedding and
Cruise. The documentaries under Momentum's (its documentary division)
belt include Beautiful Daughters, In the Name of Allah, Gay Fraternities
and Sororities and Gay Republicans. Logo has secured such
films as HBO's Angels in America, Billy Elliott, Mullholland Drive, Far
from Heaven, Being John Malkovich, In the Gloaming, Party Monster, The
24th Day and A Home at the End of the World.

The UK's Sky One (BSkyB's flagship channel) picked up the rights

addition to hosting a new reality show, Make Me a Supermodel, for
the UK's Five, she will be the face on the Airborne TV/Discovery Networks
Europe-produced Bra Wars: Boom or Bust (1x60). The
