Good morning! It's
Monday, January 17, 2005, Martin
Luther King Jr. Day, and this is your first
early morning Multi-Cultural
briefing.
The teen network The N (Noggin's evening block airing 6p-6a) will
debut the Miracle's Boysmini-series on February 18 at 9
pm. The drama focuses on three half-Puerto Rican/half-African
American orphaned New York teenagers as the boys try to keep their family
intact. The Harlem-based and filmed show will premiere in 3 parts
starting with the first episode on February 18, the second on February 19
at 9 pm and February 20 at 9 pm. Based on Jacqueline Woodson's
Miracle's Boys novel, the mini-series adaptation is directed by Spike
Lee, LeVar Burton, Bill Duke, Ernest Dickerson and Neema Barnette with
NAS writing and performing the theme song. In addition, the NY
Yankees' catcher Jorge Posada and NY Giants' running back Tiki Barber
will play coaches on the show. On Screen Entertainment's Nikki
Silver, Orly Wiseman and David C. McCourt exec produce with Tonya Lewis
Lee.
HISPANIC MARKET:
The California Lottery is narrowing down
its review pool for its $28 million Hispanic ad account. The agencies
that made the four-year contract's finals include LA's Acento
Advertising, Tustin's Al Punto Advertising, LA's Castells &
Asociados, San Francisco's Omnicom Group's Dieste Harmel & Partners,
LA's Grey Global Group's WING Latino Los Angeles and Costa Mesa's
Interpublic Group of Cos.' Casanova Pendrill (incumbent). A March
decision is anticipated. The agreement does include an optional
additional 2-year extension.
The upcoming Presidential Inauguration will bring in a Hispanic
vocalist to sing The Star Spangled Banner for the first time.
The 19-year old Ana Cristina will sing the national song in
acapella at the Constitutional Ball, one of 8 Inaugural Balls.
Telemundo has a new Oklahoma City affiliate with the addition of
KTUZ to its national coverage station roster. The Tyler
Media-owned and operated station is situated in the 54th largest Hispanic
market in the country.
Univision.com is offering up several different coverage on its
site. This year's Ford-sponsored Premio Lo Nuestro 2005 can be
found on the website with new interactive features, a sweepstakes contest
and coverage of the Spanish-language television award show. Online
voting is available February 10. The website will also cover two
key US car shows in LA and Detroit. Another new feature to debut on
Univision.com is the Local Ayuda Legal (Local Legal Help) resource with
interactive Spanish-language info on the US legal process.
LATAM MARKET:
AETN International named Ledafilms as its
Latin American free television distributor for its A&E
and The History Channel catalogue titles. AETN currently
runs A&E Mundo and The History Channel with Ole Communications to
reach their 10+ million subscribers in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico,
Venezuela and 18 additional nations.
AFRICAN AMERICAN MARKET:
Here are some of the television programming
options available in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. today/this
month.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: A Historical Perspective will air
on STARZ! on January 17 at 7:02 pm. The Tom
Friedman-directed show will feature rare footage/pictures of the civil
rights leader centering on his thoughts, ideas and Civil Rights Movement
actions.
Citizen King will air on PBS according to local channel
listings. In this documentary, the last 5 years of his life will be
brought to life through the eyes of those close to him. Orlando
Bagwell and W. Noland Walker wrote and directed the doc.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day: The Making of a Dream is set for
broadcast on February 8 at 8 am on The History Channel. The
autobiography show is narrated by Dennis Haysbert and holds actor LeVar
Burton acting out MLK Jr.'s words in addition to observations from actor
Dule Hill and U.S. Rep. Harold Ford Jr. (D-Tenn.).
TV One announced some of its upcoming debuts:
TV. One Gospel - A free VOD service with excerpts/messages
from ministers' sermons, music as well as The Gospel of Music with Jeff
Majors episodes.
Singletary Says - Set to premiere in March, the show is led by
Washington Post financial columnist Michelle Singletary as she delves
into peoples' real money life to aid them in correcting and learning
about common financial errors.
Divine Restoration - In this spiritual twist on home
renovation, the show heads into African American churches for “home”
redos including the community in the planning and work.
More shows set to premiere this spring will be announced shortly.
Black STARZ! Is debuting its original documentary Unstoppable:
A Conversation with Gordon Parks, Melvin Van Peebles and Ossie Davis
on February 13 at 8 pm. The new doc is part of the Heritage programming
package and profiles these three African American movie movers and
shakers. Guests such as Reginald Hudlin, Julie Dash, Ruby Dee and
Nelson George appear in the Warrington Hudlin-moderated (Black Filmmaker
Foundation's producer/president). Unstoppable is directed by John
Lewis and produced by John Lewis and Warrington Hudlin.
Commentator Armstrong Williams may be a little more trouble than a
bit of bad publicity with a potential move by the FCC against
him. Armstrong's acceptance of close to a quarter million dollars
from the Department of Education to push the No Child Left Behind Act in
his commentary is instigating a payola investigation by the
FCC. Democratic Commissioner Jonathan Adelstein stated that “it
doesn't make a difference to me as far as the FCC is concerned. It
doesn't matter if it's the government or a record label. …I'm going to
insist that we investigate this and every other payola incident”.
According to regulations, Armstrong needed to disclose if he picked up
compensation, and the broadcaster was also required to investigate
whether its commentators were receiving compensation for airing
programming/opinions. The commissioner reported that there was no
disclosure made.
BlackAthlete Sports Network, LLC (BASN) and 411 Sports LLC
formed a joint media venture to bring African American sports and
athlete info from all sports levels with a national and international
reach. BASN and 411 will start by distributing sports newspapers in
inner-city US neighborhoods and at
www.blackathlete.net
with its first local newspaper launch last week in Dallas.
INDIAN/ASIAN MARKET:
Malaysian viewers will now have access to MTV
India, MTV Indonesia, MTV Mandarin and VH1
through MTV Networks Asia's new collaboration with the new
pay-television platform MiTV Corporation. MiTV will offer the
Indian/Asian MTV channels on its lifestyle/entertainment bouquet under
its basic subscription.
The ImaginAsian is partnering with Regent Releasing and
Magnolia Pictures to hold special advance screenings at the New
York theater to benefit Asian tsunami victims. The January
18-20 screening attendees will be asked to make a donation with all
proceeds to be donated to UNICEF, Oxfam and the Red Cross. The screenings
include of the as-yet-unreleased Asian-themed movies Meenaxi: Tale of 3
Cities (January 18 at 7 pm), Beautiful Boxer (January 19 at 7 pm) and
Ong-Bak: The Thai Warrior (January 20 at 7 pm).
Correction: The late actor, Amrish Puri, worked in Richard
Attenborough's Gandhi movie in 1982 and Steven Spielberg's Indiana Jones
and The Temple Of Doom (not Spielberg's Gandhi as reported in the
January 14 Cynopsis MCE).

emergency reality series Trauma: Life in the ER (6x60), the documentary
Smoke: A Celebration of the Cigar (1x60) and the World Of Wealth (6x60)
and Super Structures: Making Money (1x60) shows. All the titles
will air on the Al-Arabiya TV news network except for Filmfakers, which
will be shown on the pan-Arab network MBC.
INTERNATIONAL MARKETS: Walt Disney Television International will experience a double
change with the departure of its President, David Hulbert from the
company after 10 years and a division split. The international TV
operations will see a divide between its television channels and other
branded properties from its Buena Vista operation (Disney's films and TV
programs distribution).
etc., ALL MARKETS:
The Disney-ABC Television Group upped two
execs, John Hardie and Tom Toumazis, as part of its Europe,
the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) business restructuring. In

Hulbert, will leave. John was named as EVP/Managing Directorof Branded Television for the EMEA region from his previous
position as SVP/Managing Director. He will oversee the daily
workings of the EMEA markets' Disney Channel TV and branded TV
properties. John will report to Disney Channel Worldwide's
president Rich Ross. Tom was upped to EVP/Managing
Director of Buena Vista International Television, EMEA.
He was previously VP/Managing Director. He will be responsible for
his company's business affairs, distribution, finance, marketing,
portfolio development and sales in the EMEA markets. Tom will report to
Laurie Younger, Buena Vista Worldwide Television's
President. Laurie will also assume more responsibilities by

GMTV, and HBO Central Europe and more). Some reporting changes
