AFRICAN AMERICAN MARKET:
A newly released Gospel Radio research
report from Interep showed that the number of US commercial
Black Gospel radio stations rose from 83 in 2002 to 284 in 2004. As
of 2003, religious music added up to 5.8% of total music sales from 4.8%
in 1993 with more and more current recording artists delving into the
gospel genre (i.e., Michelle Williams, Smokey Robinson, Billy Ray Cyrus
and Randy Travis). Although many of the cities with a hefty
African-American populations have a minimum of 1 Gospel station, over
half of the genre’s listeners are located in the Southeastern US
states. In terms of consumer demographics, Interep reported that
more than 17% of gospel listeners bring in $75,000+ for household income
with 71% as homeowners and 42% with at least one college degree.
Alicia Keys has been named to be only the third singer to perform
“America the Beautiful” at the Super Bowl on February
6. (The song was performed by Vicki Carr in 1977 and Ray Charles in
2001.) Alicia’s backup singers will be 150 Florida School for the Deaf
and the Blind (Ray Charles 1937 alma mater).
INDIAN/ASIAN MARKET:
Sesame Workshop has partnered with Turner
India, to produce Sesame India for Turner’s Cartoon Network
and Pogo channel’s in the region. Sesame India is targeted to the
157 million kids under the age of six. Debuting in 2006, the series
will feature new Indian Muppet characters, locally produced live action
and animation segments, and classic Sesame Street moments with Elmo,
Cookie Monster and the rest of the residents of the Street. The
series will be distributed on multiple platforms across India. To
best address the local needs of children and to ensure relevance to kids
and families in the region, Sesame India will incorporate a music, live
action and animation-centered curriculum created by Indian educators,
child development experts, and producers. In the first season,
Sesame India will be in Hindi with English words and simple phrases
incorporated into the series. Subsequent series cycles will be
available in other languages. In addition to the TV series, a
Sesame India radio program and outreach materials, including posters and
flashcards, will be distributed in both urban and rural areas.
Funding for the development phase of Sesame India was provided through
the US Agency for International Development and ICICI Bank.
GAY/LESBIAN MARKET:
New York City-based 8 Guys Out experienced
some resistance with several California radio stations when it asked to
take ads out announcing its new San Francisco and LA offices. The
gay men’s dining club for 40+ year olds is a spin-off of the Dinner
Introductions idea and company (for straight men and women to meet with 7
others over dinner in an upscale restaurant). San Francisco’s
KDFC-FM and KMZT-FM and LA’s KWTV-FM rejected the radio ads. The
classical station KDFC FM was the only one to send a rejection reply
stating that the station experienced an influx of complaints when they
aired an ad for the Boy Meets Boy television show. According to
KDFC, “management's concern is that similarly themed advertising might
anger many of our listeners”.
INTERNATIONAL MARKETS:
Blinkx’s new blinkx TV internet search
engine has launched. The software enables viewers to find
content through their TVs related to global television and radio programs
from 20 broadcasters such as the BBC, ITN, Sky News and all Fox News

Fox International picked up a carriage
deal with NTL for its FX channel. The carriage
addition will add another 1.4 million subscribers to the channel’s UK
reach for a 8.9 million subscriber total. It will start
broadcasting on NTL in March.
