AFRICAN AMERICAN MARKET:
HBO will premiere Lackawanna Blues on
February 12 at 8 pm as part of its Black History Month celebration.
The movie, based on Ruben Santiago-Hudson's autobiographical one-man
show, tells the tale of a woman involved in her community and those she
inspired around her. Ruben wrote, exec produced and starred in the film
as well. Lackawanna Blues was directed by George C. Wolfe, co-exec
produced by Halle Berry, Vincent Cirrincione and Shelby Stone and stars
S. Epatha Merkerson, Marcus Carl Franklin, Mos Def, Carmen Ejogo, Louis
Gossett Jr., Macy Gray, Terrence Dashon Howard, Delroy Lindo, Rosie
Perez, Liev Schreiber, Jimmy Smits and Jeffrey Wright. HBO is
conducting a sweepstakes in connection with the film. The contest's
grand prize is tied into the HBO-sponsored Essence Music Festival 2005 on
July 1-3 in New Orleans. New HBO and ESSENCE subscribers are also
eligible for a free subscription to ESSENCE Magazine.
The free internet radio program The Tammy Says... show, will
broadcast live from the Presidential Inauguration on January
20. In addition to airing from the inaugural itself, Tammy will
cover several of the event's balls (Freedom Ball, eNauguration Ball,
Billionaires Ball, JC Watts Unity Ball, Emerging Entrepreneurs Ball and
Celebration of Freedom Ball). The Tammy Says... show presently airs
on Monday and Thursday. The show also debuted on Raleigh, NC's WAUG
750AM in on Mondays and an additional program on Wednesdays next

Madonna and Mary J. Blige will soon have their day in court
(or at least their lawyers will) with a new filing against Mary J.
connected to her “Not Today” song (from the Barbershop 2
soundtrack). According to Madonna's legal entourage, “Not Today”
just sounds too similar to Madonna's “Holiday” (1983). Eve and Dr.
Dre were also named in the suit as they collaborated with Mary J. Blige
on the song.
INDIAN/ASIAN MARKET:
In a monumental collaboration between two
recently warring countries, Indian and Pakistani actors and
artists are working and performing together for a February 6
concert to benefit thousands of Indians affected by the tsunami
through the Indian Prime Minister's Relief Fund. Over 200 people
will take part in the Mumbai show to be televised on 17 local Indian
television channels.
MIDDLE EAST MARKET:
Imax signed a deal with Kuwait National Cinema
Company (Kuwait's biggest commercial exhibitor) to bring two Imax
theater systems to the country. This will be a first for Kuwait as
well as being the first multiplex-based Imax theater in the Middle
East. The first Imax theater is scheduled to open this year and the
second in 2007. By the end of 2007, the region will be home to nine
theaters in in Dubai, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab
Emirates.
INTERNATIONAL MARKETS:
ESPN International and the National Basketball
Association (NBA) have re-inked their contract (already in the their
15th year together) to cover 51 live NBA games annually (including
regular season and playoff games), 19 WNBA games and non-game series
programming (NBA Action, WNBC Action and ESPN Shootaround) for the
network's African, Caribbean, Latin American, Middle Eastern and
Pacific Rim (Australia and New Zealand) networks.
FilmFlex has launched its first movie VOD service. It
will start out in Scotland on NTL's broadband platform with future plans
showing launches throughout the UK this year. FilmFlex is a Sony
Pictures Television International, Walt Disney Television International
and ON Demand Group joint collaboration. The movies included in the
services will come from production houses such as Columbia Pictures,
TriStar Films, Revolution Studios, Sony Pictures Classics, Touchstone
Pictures, Hollywood Pictures, Miramax Films and Pathe and Icon
Films. The VOD service will come through to digital television
audiences on digital cable platforms.
ESPN Classic Sport is launching Scandinavia-focused programming in
the region. The Nordic Nights block will air March 7-13
between 8-10 pm in Denmark, Sweden and Finland. The special
programming will include 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympics, 1981 French
Open tennis tournament and NHL Stanley Cup (featuring Nordic players)
footage.
etc., ALL MARKETS:
Wal-Mart is standing up for itself in a new
campaign leveled against "urban legends" and criticism
about the corporation and its associates. Wal-Mart is taking out a
full-page advertisement in over 100 US newspapers including such
publications as The Amsterdam News, The Chicago Defender, The Washington
Afro-American and dozens of African American-focused newspapers.
According to CEO H. Lee Scott, "we understand that, as one of the
most visible corporations in the world, we will be a target for
criticism. When it is valid, we try to learn from it and become a better
company. But we have made a commitment to our associates, customers
and suppliers that when false allegations are made about Wal-Mart, we
will actively correct the record. That's what this day is all
about." In addition to the ads, the company started up

to provide facts on the company and its people.
Intermedia and Summit Film Distribution (merged into one company
in 2003) named Trish Vasquez to its international marketing
division. She will oversee the creative, promotional and PR
campaign's for the company' global theatrical releases. Trish was
previously VP of international publicity at New Line Cinema.
Deborah Tellis was named to I.S. Film's distribution
unit. She will oversee the company's theatrical/video
distribution which includes strategy, media spending and box office
reporting and analysis. Deborah was previously employed at Sony Pictures
Releasing Intl. Both Trish and Deborah will be based in Santa
Monica.
Entravision Radio named Brian Reed as VP/Sales. He
will oversee local ad sales in the Spanish-language media company's 21
radio markets. Brian was previously with Univision Radio as
VP/Director of sales. He will be based in LA.
