INDIAN/ASIAN MARKET:

As of next week, National Geographic Channel will debut a children's programming block in India as a testing ground for the Nat Geo Junior.  Geared towards 7-14 year olds, the block will eventually make its global rounds if the India run is successful.  Nat Geo Junior anime, adventure, science and other programming will air weekdays for 1 evening hour and 10-afternoon on Sundays.  Some of the shows to be included are Backyard Science, the Serious series and Doc Eurek.

International Channel is changing itself to cater more the Asian audience with a channel rebranding and reprogramming effort.  The changes include more English-language Asian programming in addition to the channel's current Asia Street primetime programming block.  The revisions will appear later on this year in the second quarter.  International Channel will continue with Asia Street as well as the Asian-language programming it currently airs.  New York-based Woo Art International is the agency working on the rebranding effort.  IC is slowly but surely decreasing its European- and Middle Eastern-language programming till it drops these non-Asian-language programming altogether by the 2nd quarter (it will continue to  offer these programs on its premium networks and On Demand services).

Toronto based OMNI.2 will present the debut of Hong Kong Express - The Fast Track to Fame and Fortune on February 5 at 7 pm.  The 1-hour English-language documentary focuses in on several Chinese-Canadian women who compete for the Miss Chinese Canada title and a chance at taking part in the Miss Chinese Hong Kong and China's Miss Chinese Universe competition.  The Mandarin-language version will air on March 5 at 8 pm with the Cantonese-language edition following on April 2 at 8 pm.

MIDDLE EAST MARKET:

CNN International will present a look at the Muslim's sacred pilgrimage to Mecca through the eyes of several American Muslims making the trip, footage of over 2 million traveling to the Hajj from cities around the world, trip logistics and more in The Path of Pilgrims.  Zain Verjee will host the special with CNN International airing special coverage through January 24.  She will be joined by Imam Tahir Anwar who will provide additional analysis.  The program will also follow an Iraqi-American family, a Shia Cleric and a young New York couple to the Hajj.  The week-long coverage will be summarized in the 30-minute program, Hajj: The Path of Pilgrims.

GAY/LESBIAN MARKET:

New Human Rights Campaign television ads will air today and throughout inauguration week.  The 30-second ads are designed to point out discrepancies in President Bush's words and actions, pinpointing equal rights for US gays, lesbians, bis#xuals and transgenders.  CNN, MSNBC and FOXNews will air the ads in the Washington, D.C. area.

INTERNATIONAL MARKETS:

Buena Vista International Television (BVITV) and Germany's ProSiebenSat.1 Group inked a new multi-year free-to-air deal that covers several genres and right aspects.  The agreement includes US television program licensing, features, animated series and carriage of the Group's Disney branded blocks (Disney Time and Disney Filmparade).  In addition, BVITV has inked a licensing agreement with ProSiebenSat.1 Group's Kabel 1 channel for children's programming library for Kabel 1's new Jetix branded time block.  With the Disney Time timeslot moved from ProSieben to Kabel 1, the Group added an additional hour to the slot for a total of 3 Sunday am programming hours.  Such Disney shows as Lilo & Stitch, from Kim Possible (new eps), Fillmore, Recess and Timon & Pumbaa will appear in the programming block.  BVITV's features to make the transition include Pirates of the Caribbean: Treasures of the Lost Abyss, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and The Aviator.

The UK's Flextech Television has picked up the first 6 hours of Filmfakers from CABLEready to broadcast on the network's Bravo and Trouble channels and on UKTV People (co-owned with BBC).  In addition to airing the comedy reality series, Flextech has also taken the option of acquiring format rights in order to produce a British version with CABLEready taking on worldwide distribution excluding Ireland and the UK.

Answer to Yesterday's Trivia Question:  Who's rule is this:  "OK, rule number one. Unless you're served in a frosted glass, never come within four feet of my lips." KAREN on WILL & GRACE.  Naturally.  Kudos to:  Michael Lopez-DAS Ent/Silicon Valley; Frank Hagan-Creative Differences/Studio City.

Today's Trivia Question:  In response to criticism of his personal and professional style, he is attributed as being the first to say, "I cried all the way to the bank."  Who is this?   (click here with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone with your answer.  Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you've been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can't be mentioned again that calendar week.)
