HISPANIC MARKET:
Nextel Communications Inc. is extending its
"Nextel. Ya." Hispanic ad campaign to the Boston,
Fresno, Orlando, Philadelphia, Sacramento, Tampa and Washington, DC
areas. A new Spanish-language TV ad will air in these markets as
well as the campaign's current Chicago, Dallas, Houston, LA, Miami, New
York and San Diego markets. The campaign's new phase will encompass
TV, print, outdoor and radio advertisements. Nextel's Hispanic
agency of record, Accentmarketing created the campaign which began in
2003.
Si TV will be available to Time Warner Cable of New York and
New Jersey digital subscribers this quarter. The areas included
are Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island, Brooklyn, Mt. Vernon and Hudson
Valley and Bergen and Hudson Counties in NJ.

LATAM MARKET:
Moonscoop, a children/animation programming
distributor, inked several distribution deals with Latin American
networks for its action adventure anime Code Lyoko. In
addition to Chile's TVN pick up of the full 52 episodes, Jetix
Latin America acquired the second season (26 eps presently in
production). Moonscoop named Exim as the Latin American licensing
agent and FUNimation Productions Ltd. as exclusive licensing agent for
the US.
AFRICAN AMERICAN MARKET:
February and Black History Month will see
a slew of African American-focused programs on The History
Channel.
Black Preachers looks at the roles of church and how it
affects African-American life with an in-depth focus on 5 preachers who
made a difference in their community (John Jasper, Father Devine, Fred
Shuttlesworth, Jesse Jackson and Eddie Long). It will premiere on
February 5 at 7 pm.
Save Our History: Voices of Civil Rights tells the tales of
those who lived during and were affected by the civil rights movement
through a joint nationwide effort by the AARP, Leadership Conference on
Civil Rights and Library of Congress to record firsthand accounts. Save
Our History debuts on February 12 at 8 pm.
Modern Marvels: George Washington Carver Tech delves into
George Washington Carver's scientific inventions (over 300 uses for the
peanut, soy products and agriculture). The program will
premiere on February 15 at 10 pm.
Savoy is making its way back to newsstands 8 months after
Hermene Hartman bought the magazine and 2 years after it left mag
racks. The African American-targeted publication will continue to
cater to the more upscale reader with Barack and Michelle Obama gracing
the February debut edition. Savoy will have 10 editions annually
with combined June/July and December/January issues with a starting (or
rather return) circulation base of 325,000 subscribers.
In a follow up story on Bravo's celebration of Black History Month
in Cynopsis MCE on January 7, the revised debut date of the 1-hour
The Sarah Jones Show will be on February 20 at 10 pm (initially
reported as February 13). The variety/performance show will
showcase characters from Sarah Jones' off-Broadway stage show Bridge
& Tunnel (presented/produced by Meryl Streep). The Jumbolaya
Productions production is exec produced by Nancy Stern, Mary-Jane April
and Sarah Jones.

INDIAN/ASIAN MARKET:
As of next week, National Geographic
Channel will debut a children's programming block in India as
a testing ground for the Nat Geo Junior. Geared towards 7-14
year olds, the block will eventually make its global rounds if the India
run is successful. Nat Geo Junior anime, adventure, science and
other programming will air weekdays for 1 evening hour and 10-afternoon
on Sundays. Some of the shows to be included are Backyard Science,
the Serious series and Doc Eurek.
International Channel is changing itself to cater more the Asian
audience with a channel rebranding and reprogramming effort.
The changes include more English-language Asian programming in addition
to the channel's current Asia Street primetime programming block.
The revisions will appear later on this year in the second quarter.
International Channel will continue with Asia Street as well as the
Asian-language programming it currently airs. New York-based Woo
Art International is the agency working on the rebranding effort.
IC is slowly but surely decreasing its European- and Middle
Eastern-language programming till it drops these non-Asian-language
programming altogether by the 2nd quarter (it will continue to
offer these programs on its premium networks and On Demand services).
Toronto based OMNI.2 will present the debut of Hong Kong
Express - The Fast Track to Fame and Fortune on February 5 at 7
pm. The 1-hour English-language documentary focuses in on several
Chinese-Canadian women who compete for the Miss Chinese Canada title and
a chance at taking part in the Miss Chinese Hong Kong and China's Miss
Chinese Universe competition. The Mandarin-language version will
air on March 5 at 8 pm with the Cantonese-language edition following on
April 2 at 8 pm.
MIDDLE EAST MARKET:
CNN International will present a look at the
Muslim's sacred pilgrimage to Mecca through the eyes of several
American Muslims making the trip, footage of over 2 million traveling to
the Hajj from cities around the world, trip logistics and more in The
Path of Pilgrims. Zain Verjee will host the special with CNN
International airing special coverage through January 24. She will
be joined by Imam Tahir Anwar who will provide additional analysis.
The program will also follow an Iraqi-American family, a Shia Cleric and
a young New York couple to the Hajj. The week-long coverage will be
summarized in the 30-minute program, Hajj: The Path of Pilgrims.
GAY/LESBIAN MARKET:
New Human Rights Campaign television ads
will air today and throughout inauguration week. The 30-second ads
are designed to point out discrepancies in President Bush's words and
actions, pinpointing equal rights for US gays, lesbians, bis#xuals and
transgenders. CNN, MSNBC and FOXNews will air the ads in the
Washington, D.C. area.
INTERNATIONAL MARKETS:
Buena Vista International Television (BVITV) and
Germany's ProSiebenSat.1 Group inked a new multi-year free-to-air
deal that covers several genres and right aspects. The agreement
includes US television program licensing, features, animated series and
carriage of the Group's Disney branded blocks (Disney Time and Disney
Filmparade). In addition, BVITV has inked a licensing agreement
with ProSiebenSat.1 Group's Kabel 1 channel for children's programming
library for Kabel 1's new Jetix branded time block. With the Disney
Time timeslot moved from ProSieben to Kabel 1, the Group added an
additional hour to the slot for a total of 3 Sunday am programming
hours. Such Disney shows as Lilo & Stitch, from Kim Possible
(new eps), Fillmore, Recess and Timon & Pumbaa will appear in the
programming block. BVITV's features to make the transition include
Pirates of the Caribbean: Treasures of the Lost Abyss, The Chronicles of
Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, The Hitchhiker's Guide to
the Galaxy and The Aviator.
The UK's Flextech Television has picked up the first 6 hours of
Filmfakers from CABLEready to broadcast on the network's
Bravo and Trouble channels and on UKTV People (co-owned with BBC).
In addition to airing the comedy reality series, Flextech has also taken
the option of acquiring format rights in order to produce a British
version with CABLEready taking on worldwide distribution excluding
Ireland and the UK.
