HISPANIC MARKET:
Telemundo and the Rumbo newspapers have
teamed up to provide San Antonio Hispanics with news updates through
their combined resources. Telemundo's broadcast coverage will be
available to the publications with Rumbo's reporting accessible by the
network's area KVDA television station.
New York's Univision 41 will center on the health issues facing US
Hispanics in the half-hour Habitos Sanos…Vida Sana (Healthy
Habits…Healthy Life) special on January 29 at 10 am. The program
will highlight the Despierta America anchor Neida Sandoval's husband and
his health history with a more in-depth focus on lifestyle choices and
expert interviews. Maria Antonieta Collins will host the
show. Habitos Sanos…Vida Sana is the first in the Salud es
Vida…Enterate! (Lead a Healthy Life…Get the Facts!) series.
California's al Punto Advertising was named to Kia Motors's
Hispanic account. The advertising account is reportedly $10
million.
LATAM MARKET:
A large single network of Latin American,
Caribbean and US ad agencies has pooled forces to bring more
personalized service and a larger local data base to their more than 260
combined clients. The 15 communications agencies have created
Comya Global to reach their 18 markets, a total $7 million billing
capacity and nearly 200 employees. The agencies included in Comya
Global are Martinez, Frugoni & Asociados (Argentina), The Counsellors
(Bahamas), Troncossi Public Relations (Bermuda), MVL Comunicaçao
(Brazil), BMR Building Media Relations (Chile), Dattis Comunicaciones
Estrategicas (Colombia), Imagen y Comunicacion Estrategica (Costa Rica),
Staffeld & Co. (Dominican Republic), Publipromueve (Ecuador), OYE
Action (El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras), Illuminarte Communications
(Jamaica and Barbados), CB Comunicacion (Mexico), Stratego Communications
(Panama), Comunicacion Activa (Peru) and Acqua Communications (United
States).
Cartoon Network Latin America picked up three animated features
from Cookie Jar Entertainment for pan regional broadcasting.
Arthur (125x30), 4 seasons of The Little Lulu Show (52x30)
and Mona the Vampire (65x30) in a pan regional broadcast deal to
Cartoon Network Latin America.

AFRICAN AMERICAN
MARKET:
Showtime will bring the following programs to its
viewing audiences in honor of Black History Month:
The Black Filmmaker Showcase is set to debut on February 1 at
10 pm. The short films selected for the program include:
Gift for the Living (Director Tamika Miller) delves into a
grandmother and granddaughter's relationship through their giving of
birthday presents and what it takes to give the perfect gift. Irma
P. Hall and Vanessa Williams star in the short.
In Get Home Safe (Director Lyndon McCray), three African
American teenagers attempt to catch a cab in order to get home.
Out of Body Experience (Director Vanskie Elder, Jr.) sees a
man dreaming of his wife's surprise pregnancy as his own with Chris
Spencer starring.
Hope's Choice (Director Garrett Thompson) shows a man's
dilemma between a more stable life with his pregnant girlfriend and the
life of danger as a gangster with his friends.
In Red Eye (Director Kevin Gordon), looks at how society may
tend to view black men through images as commentary.
Shook (Director Melanie R.W. Oram) stars Robynn Lee as a wife finding
out about her husband's gay affair.
Showtime Original Pictures will start airing on Tuesdays in
February at 10 pm.
Deacons For Defense (February 8) tells the true tale of a band
of African American men who stood up to fight the Ku Klux Klan with
Forest Whitaker, Jonathan Silverman and Ossie Davis in the star roles.
The film is produced by Robert Rehme, directed by Bill Duke, written by
Richard Wesley and Frank Military with the original story by Michael
D'Antonio.
In Crown Heights (February 15) Mario Van Peebles and Howie
Mandel star as community leaders dealing with the Crown Heights race
riots by founding Project Cure to foster communication and understanding.
Jeremy Kagan produced and directed the film from the original tale by
Michael D'Antonio and the script from Toni Ann Johnson.
Good Fences (February 22) is based on Erika Ellis' novel
chronicling a African-American family moving up socially and its turn for
the worst with Whoopi Goldberg and Danny Glover in the key roles.
The screenplay was written by Trey Ellis with Spike Lee and Sam Kitt exec
producing, Whoopi Goldberg and Danny Glover producing, Ernest Dickerson
directing and production by 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks.
Barbershop and Barbershop 2: Back in Business will start up
the Black History Month celebrations on January 30 at 6:15 pm.
Cherokee Inc. inked an exclusive deal with Essence
Communications to represent the publication's direct retail licensing
growth. The agency will be responsible for retailer outreach for
combined African American-oriented products
INDIAN/ASIAN MARKET:
MTV Networks picked up its first international
program purchase with its recent acquisition of the worldwide broadcast
rights to Animation Collective's Kappa Mikey. The
Japanese animation series (26x30) will debut on the US' Nicktoons
and Nickelodeon's international channels next year. In
addition, MTV Networks International will need to secure international
distribution rights for third-party broadcast sales according to the new
deal. Kappa Mikey delves into the main character's search to be
liked by the anime's other characters and learn about Japanese
culture.
PURE-I Co. Ltd acquired the Korean format rights for the game show
format Everyone Wins from Robert Chua Productions.
The show will debut in March for 5 nights a week on the country's Ulsan
TV and Gangwon TV channels. This will be followed by additional
rollouts in June in 3 other regions. Everyone Wins is a
interactive viewer/studio competition that allows those watching to call
in to participate as well. PURE-I Co. Ltd is a Korean interactive
TV production company.
INTERNATIONAL MARKET:
AETN International (A&E Television Networks'
international sales/marketing unit) signed a multi-year, long-term
licensing deal Germany's N24, Russia's TV Kultura and
Italy's La 7. N24 picked up 26 1/2 programming hours and a
promise for 100 hours for 2005 with programs centering on ancient history
and military focuses from The History Channel library as well as the
series Modern Marvels (11x60). TV Kultura also committed up to 100
hours this year with 28 hours including such The History Channel shows as
Titanic, Gold!, Egypt: Beyond the Pyramids and other ancient history
series. La 7 extended its 3 year volume deal with AETN
International giving the Italian network Biography series episodes and
other History Channel library pieces as well as continuing its cross
promotion with The History Channel Italy.
France's ZED production outfit has signed on with
CABLEready to exclusively distribute for the rep firm in France
(the two companies worked together last year with the distribution of
CABLEready's The Directors to Cine Cinema). In addition, CABLEready
has inked deals with ABSat for the airing of forensic series
Medical Detectives (50x30), travel show Julian and Camilla's
World Odyssey (10x60), outdoors series Samurai Sportsman
(13x30), and hunting show Hunting with Hank (25x30) in France and
Belgium.
Lions Gate Films now holds the worldwide rights to the
feature film RIZE. The documentary is David LaChapelle's
film debut as the photographer and music, video and commercial director
delves into the Krumping dance trend evident in the South Central streets
of LA. RIZE stems from David's short film (presented at the 2004
Sundance Film Festival) looking at the athleticism, aggressiveness and
artistic aspects of the dancing.
etc. ALL MARKETS:
The English-language Hispanic network VOY
Network made two top level key appointments with Eric Levin
named as President/CEO and John Ovrutsky upped to
COO. Eric was with HBO as CFO through 2001. John's
previous position at VOY was EVP of distribution and marketing. VOY
Network's former CEO/President Andrew Thau (2003-5) will remain on as an
advisor.
ViVA Partnership named Samuel Albis as Creative
Director. He will be responsible for all of the company's
creative aspects for its clients. Samuel was previously with del
Rivero Messianu Advertising/ DDB as Associate Creative
Director.
