The rumble over a tsunamiparody song
on New York's WQHT-FM (Hot 97) by Miss Jones and the Hot 97 morning
team has grown to such an extent that the station's owner, Emmis
Communications, has indefinitely suspended the show's host/team. A
spoof on the "We Are The World" song, the parody used racial
slurs and made light of the disaster. More than 10,000 signatures
were gathered in an online petition from the Asian community. In
addition, New York leaders are pushing for federal fines, more apologies
and the layoff of the Rhythm Blues/Hip Hop's morning team beyond Emmis
Communications' January 24 on-air apology and 1 week pay dock for Miss
Jones and the morning crew (to be donated to tsunami relief).
According to the station, it "would like to clarify that no company
advertising on our station had any connection to the Tsunami Song, and no
company advertising on our station endorsed or sponsored the offensive
material aired on the Miss Jones morning show. We apologize for any
misunderstanding that may have caused listeners to believe that anyone,
other than the morning show staff, was responsible for the material that
should not have been aired."
