Cynopsis: MCE
01/28/05

Good morning! It's Friday, January 28, 2005, and this is your first early morning Multi-Cultural briefing.

HISPANIC MARKET:

A recent Si TV and FGI Research study with Roslow Research Group brought up several differences between Latino and non-Latino 18-34 year-olds.  The study surveyed 1000+ 18-34 year olds (705 Latinos and 303 non-Latinos).  Here are some of the highlights:
  • The young Latinos were 230% more likely to mention television or radio advertising as "very influential" as compared to Caucasian 18-34 year olds.
  • In terms of adhering to and setting trends, the Hispanic group is 69% more likely to want to stay abreast of the latest movie and music trends and twice as likely to attend films' opening weekends.
  • Technology beckons to this young Latino group with 33% more likely to consider themselves as new product “early adopters” according to the FGI Product Adoption Index versus 19% of young Anglo adults. They are 34% more likely to have handheld devices, 26% more likely to possess a home theatre system, 80% more likely to have a car DVD/video and 66% more likely to have a plasma or large screen television.
  • Latino youth are also 26% more likely to attend pro sporting events, 17% more likely to go to a concert and 50% more likely to have gone out dancing in the past year.

Indie MHz NETWORKS and journalist Jorge Gestoso are embarking on a production joint venture with a new Spanish-language series titled Jorge Gestoso.  Set to debut on January 29 at 3 pm on MHz, the series includes individual interviews with a multitude of personalities from many walks of life.   Uruguayan journalist Jorge will host and conduct the one-on-one shows.  He was the main anchor of CNN En Espanol for many years in addition to other journalistic and administrative posts.  MHz NETWORKS is a non-commercial TV broadcaster in the Washington DC area bringing global, educational and arts programming in over 20 languages to the metro area's 4.9 million residents.

TeleFutura will bring a behind-the-scenes look at its Objetivo Fama talent search on January 29 at 6 pm on New York's WFUT and WFTY.  The Camino A Objetivo Fama: The New York Special will show some of the competition's auditions, interviews and additional footage.  Two semi-finalists from the New York area will head to Puerto Rico for the next phase of the competition set to air on January 30. The Objetivo Fama competition will continue every Sunday afterwards until the winner is picked on on May 1.

A new guide to Hispanic marketing was released by Cal National Bank.  The Community Banker's Guide to Hispanic Marketing includes info on developing products and services, understanding market representation, challenges, solutions and more.  More info at

AFRICAN AMERICAN MARKET:

A new hip hop game show is being brought to Spike TV's table this spring.  Bring It To The Table will place 2 members of different rap labels (or collectives) and regions across the poker table from each other.  The pot will include jewelry (pendant, watch, etc. worth at least $5000) from each players' "bling" collection to be auctioned off for proceeds to the poker champion's charity of choice. Sergio Meyers (“Pony Boi”) is the producer behind this game show as well as Spike TV's 10 Things Every Guy Should Experience and the creator and exec producer of MTV's Sorority Life and Fraternity Life.

The 24-hour commercial-free WAM! Channel is revving up for Black History Month with a slew of programs geared towards the channel's family friendly audience, tweens and teens.  The channel's education block will include the following films during February:
  • And the Children Shall Lead looks at racism during voter registration in the South through the eyes of a girl in 1964.
  • Black Like Me chronicles a white journalist's journey to experience being black in the South in the 1950s by undergoing pigmentation treatments to darken his skin.
  • In Booker, the slavery to freedom journey and life of Booker T. Washington is chronicled and dramatized.
  • The HD documentary Cosmic Africa delves into astronomy in Africa.
  • The Road to Brown centers on the tale of segregation, the downfall of the Jim Crow laws (and the lawyer who defeated it) and a recognition of Charles Hamilton, an African American lawyer who helped start the fight for school desegregation.
  • Simple Justice deals with the time when US legal system did not protect or fight against injustices against African Americans and the lawyers who fought to right the discrimination.
  • The 1910-based story, Words By Heart, centers on the only African American family in a town and the troubles they encounter when the daughter wins a competition.

Casting Call: In their new series, T-Boz and Chilli will set out on a journey to find a third group member to work with them in the studio and on a concert.  The hit female group lost Left Eye in 2002 in a fatal car accident.  For the next 8 weeks, the R U The Girl with T-Boz & Chilli show will travel around the US auditioning potential members.  The auditions will be in LA on January 29, New York on February 5, Chicago on February 8, Dallas on February 12, Washington DC on February 15, Atlanta on February 19 and Miami on February 26.  More info on www.upn.com.

MIDDLE EAST MARKET:

GAY/LESBIAN MARKET:

Q Television Network will air a special from the 2005 Sundance Film Festival as part of a mid-February episode of the network's Q on the Move.  The Nick Oram-hosted special will feature interviews with many celebs and film professionals at the Festival.  Q is also the official sponsor of the Queer Lounge at the Festival.

Etc., ALL MARKETS:

The rumble over a tsunami parody song on New York's WQHT-FM (Hot 97) by Miss Jones and the Hot 97 morning team has grown to such an extent that the station's owner, Emmis Communications, has indefinitely suspended the show's host/team.  A spoof on the "We Are The World" song, the parody used racial slurs and made light of the disaster.  More than 10,000 signatures were gathered in an online petition from the Asian community.  In addition, New York leaders are pushing for federal fines, more apologies and the layoff of the Rhythm Blues/Hip Hop's morning team beyond Emmis Communications' January 24 on-air apology and 1 week pay dock for Miss Jones and the morning crew (to be donated to tsunami relief).  According to the station, it "would like to clarify that no company advertising on our station had any connection to the Tsunami Song, and no company advertising on our station endorsed or sponsored the offensive material aired on the Miss Jones morning show. We apologize for any misunderstanding that may have caused listeners to believe that anyone, other than the morning show staff, was responsible for the material that should not have been aired."

The multicultural ad agency Muse Cordero Chen & Partners Inc. has changed its name to Muse Communications Inc..  The 20-year old Muse centers on marketing and communications solutions (web-based content, sales promotion, direct mail, branding, event planning and execution, PR and media buying) for African-American, Hispanic and Asian American and other ethnic consumers

J. Walter Thompson upped Craig Davis to Worldwide Chief Creative Officer (CCO).  In this position, Craig will work with CEO Bob Jeffrey to change the ad agency's global division's focus from account management to creativity and strategy.  Craig was previously CCO for Europe, Middle East and Africa.

Friday Fun Fact:  Stuart (or Stewart) is the most famous “occupational” name in Scotland, and was the name of a line of kings and queens which lasted almost 350 years.

Today's Trivia Question:  " ... Welcome to a private showing of three paintings, displayed here for the first time. Each is a collector's item in its own way - not because of any special artistic quality, but because each captures on a canvas, suspends in time and space, a frozen moment of a nightmare. ... "  This is the opening of what show? (click here with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone with your answer.  Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you've been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can't be mentioned again that calendar week.)
