Good morning! It's Monday, January 31, 2005, and this is your first early morning Multi-Cultural briefing.

HISPANIC MARKET:

People en Espanol will re-launch its www.peopleenespanol.com website today.  The revised site will include more information on the Hispanic magazine's entertainment news, breaking news, a fashion/beauty channel and more.  The Conectate editorial page will debut on the new website.  The new site will team up with AOL Latino to promote each other and collaborate on web-based projects including behind-the-scenes specials.

MTV and Jennifer Lopez are collaborating on a new 1-hour documentary set to air on February 24 at 10 pm on MTV centering on the celeb's first fashion show at Olympus Fashion Week for her new fall clothing line titled "Jennifer Lopez: Beyond the Runway".   In the doc, the cameras will trail Jennifer's designers as they attempt to meet deadlines and the whole clothing approval process.

AFRICAN AMERICAN MARKET:

Former Roc-A-Fella CEO Damon Dash and co-founder Kareem "Biggs" Burke are banding together to launch a new music entity titled Damon Dash Music Group.  In addition to signing on new talent, the company will operate as an umbrella organization for such record labels as Dream Factory (with producer 7 Aurelius) and Militain Musica (with rapper N.O.R.E.).  Rumor has it that Wu-Tang Clan and M.O.P./the First Family may be the next partnerships to join Damon Dash Music Group.

Funkmaster Flex has picked up another deal with his recent Castrol's Syntec motor oil contract.  The two-year agreement will see Syntec as the exclusive motor oil for Flex's Team Baurtwell business ventures (custom car club).  In addition, Castrol will hold the television, radio, print, online and photographic rights for advertising, events and promotional programs. The first move will include a 30-second commercial run on Spike TV's Ride With Funkmaster Flex.  A custom Castrol Syntec automobile will be designed and showcased on Flex's TV show and on his US "Celebrity Car Show Tour".  New York-based Ogilvy & Mather (WPP Group) handled the ad responsibilities for Castrol.

MIDDLE EAST MARKET:

Egypt's television shows will soon be subject to religious censorship in a move that will place restrictions in a country that has been an epicenter of television production in the Middle East.  According to Minister of Information Mamduh Al-Beltagi, the TV shows must be "responsible" and "respect the values and traditions of Egyptian society. The media cannot be transformed into instruments to distil poison under the pretext of artistic license."  The shows will first be submitted to Al-Azhar (Sunni Muslim authority) and Egypt's strong minority Christian Coptic church.  The A Girl From Shubra miniseries has already been denied from airing (dealt with a relationship between a Christian woman and Muslim man in the 1940s) due to its "dealing with relationships between Christians and Muslims in a way that undermines national unity."

GAY/LESBIAN MARKET:

TLA Releasing, a GLBT-oriented film distributor, will expand its business into the UK with 12-16 US catalog movie titles to be released annually on DVD.  The company will pick up additional movies for theatrical release.  Some of the movies to be released in England include Latter Days, The Trip, P.S. Your Cat is Dead, Regular Guys, Cowboys and Angels, Everyone and Slutty Summer.  TLA will open a London office in London with distribution set to begin in July.

Michael McManus, author of the syndicated column "Ethics & Religion”, is the latest to show up on the Department of Health and Human Services' subcontractor payroll according to USA Today and Salon.com.  The columnist was reportedly paid to promote the Bush administration marriage initiative for approximately $10,000.  This follows news that syndicated columnist Maggie Gallagher and African American writer/broadcaster Armstrong Williams were also paid by the administration to promote the marriage initiative and other administration programs.

INTERNATIONAL MARKET:

MTV will debut its pan-African music channel on February 22.  In addition to airing global MTV fanfare, the new 24-hour channel will develop and integrate local African music talent such as Femi Kuti (Nigeria), Magic System (Ivory Coast), SSP (Angola), Nameless (Kenya), VIP (Ghana), Zama Jobe (South Africa) and Angelique Kidjo (Benin).  The channel will initially reach 1.3 million homes on multichannel operators DStv, Trend TV, CTL and FSTV.

etc., ALL MARKETS:

Creative Civilization (Aguilar/Girard Agency) named Mike De La Garza as Director of Client Services and Public Relations to the agency's executive management team.

Clear Channel Entertainment Television named Dennis Spencer as SVP/MD for International Distribution and Programming.  He will oversee CCETV's expansion of its new music and entertainment international programming and distribution enterprise (launched in the fall) and work with Steve Sterling, SVP of Clear Channel Entertainment TV, on this initiative.  Dennis was previously VP/MD of international programming for CCETV.  He will report to Joe Townley, president of Clear Channel Entertainment TV.

Answer to Yesterday's Trivia Question:  " ... Welcome to a private showing of three paintings, displayed here for the first time. Each is a collector's item in its own way - not because of any special artistic quality, but because each captures on a canvas, suspends in time and space, a frozen moment of a nightmare. ... "  This is the opening of what show?  NIGHT GALLERY.  Kudos to:  Scott Jolles-NCC/Atlanta; Dan Persons-Upstart Co/NY; Ed Goode-Connelly Partners/Boston; Jody Davis-WUPA/Atlanta; Brian Nugent-KPIF/Pocatello; Meghan McGuinness-Harris Corp./Colorado Springs; Michael Lopez-DAS Ent/Silicon Valley; Matt Wayne-Warner Animation/Sherman Oaks; Kathleen Campbell-Warner Bros/Burbank.

Today's Trivia Question: This location was billed as the 'wettest, soggiest, and dreariest place on Earth'.  Where is it?  (click here with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone with your answer.  Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you've been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can't be mentioned again that calendar week.)
