Edition
1/18/07 Good Morning. It's Thursday, January 18, 2007, and this is your first early morning International & Multicultural briefing, from the NATPE Convention in Las Vegas. INTERNATIONAL MARKET: Buena Vista International Television has made a few sales to Spain's Cuatro. The deal includes programs such as Ugly Betty, Day Break, and Six Degrees. The U.S. version of Ugly Betty is scheduled to air on the Spanish network later this year. Fortsmann Little's sports, entertainment and media business, IMG, bought sports TV rights company CSI Sports. The CSI Sports athletics to fall under IMG's direction now include Cricket Australia, the U.K.'s Football Association, England and Wales Cricket Board, New Zealand Cricket, Cricket South Africa, and Zimbabwe Cricket. CSI Sports was previously part of Interpublic Group subsidiary Octagon Worldwide. As for management changes, won't be much of that. CSI Sports current management will continue on with the addition of former IMGer and Octagon CSI President, Chris Guinness, to the IMG management team. CROSS-MARKET: One of the programs New York's WLIW21 will air in tribute to Black History Month will be The Long Walk to Freedom. Airing on February 11 at 430p, it tells the story of 12 ordinary people from different racial and economic backgrounds who accomplished extraordinary deeds during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. NATPE News: Lest you forget that NATPE is and was this week, we will bring you a few tidbits on several international and multicultural networks and their 2007 programming and marketing directions in Friday's edition. Some good reading for your travel back home (or to Sundance for you weary working souls), or for those lucky folks who made it home already. HISPANIC MARKET: Movie network ReelzChannel is launching in Puerto Rico on January 21. The network,already available to satellite Dish and DIRECT TV subscribers in the area, will now be offered to Liberty Cablevision subscribers on basic cable to 37 municipalities. This makes it the first affiliate market where ReelzChannel will be available on basic cable. DirecTV has announced a review for its Hispanic account. According to Hispanic Ad, the company's current Hispanic agency of record, The Vidal Partnership (TVP), had decided not to defend. Azteca America is looking to debut a new reality program around the middle of March. Suegras or Mothers-in-Law (working title) will hold casting calls next month in LA and Miami with production to take place in the latter. More to come in the near future. Interep's Hispanic television rep firm, Azteca America Spot Television Sales, has added WHCT, Venture Technologies Group's Azteca America affiliate in Hartford, CT to its client roster. This marks the 50th Azteca America affiliate to sign with the year-old rep firm. La Fea Mas Bella (The Prettiest Ugly Girl) delivered 6 million total viewers 2+, bringing the network a #2 spot for the M-F 8p-9p slot with 1.9 million A18-34 viewers. Last Friday's finale of Heridas de Amor (Wounds of Love) delivered 2.3 million A18-49 and 4.3 million Persons 2+. The reality series, produced by Jerome Gary from a Richard M. Fairbanks Foundation of Indiana grant, chronicles three Arab university students' 10-week adventure across the U.S. Targeted to a young Middle East and broader Muslim audience, the series focuses on Arab and American attitudes toward each other as seen by the students and the Americans they meet, according to PR Newswire. Layalina Productions Inc. is a U.S. non-profit Arabic- and English-language TV producer. MBC Group subsidiary O3 Productions also worked with Layalina on this first season. New Line Television Inc. reps Layalina in the U.S. EXECUTIVE MOVES: Twentieth Century Fox International upped Eduardo Echeverria to EVP/Latin America from his previous position as SVP. He will continue to manage Latin American theatrical distribution and sales and marketing operations. Eduardo will report into Fox International co-presidents Paul Hanneman and Tomas Jegeus. Discovery Networks Latin America named Vicky Zambrano as Director/Programming, People + Arts. NBC Universal International named Taichi Fukuda as Managing Director and Japan Representative. In this newly created role, he will manage business strategy for the company in Japan, covering divisions such as Universal Pictures Japan, TV, new media distribution, mobile entertainment, and CNBC. Taichi was previously General Electric Japan's Business Development Director. He will be based in Tokyo and report to NBC Universal International's president, Peter Smith.
