1/17/07 Good Morning. It's Wednesday, January 17, 2007, and this is your first early morning International & Multicultural briefing, from the NATPE Convention in Las Vegas. NATPE News: Nickelodeon Latin America has signed a multi-year deal with Mexico's Televisa Canal 5 for the exclusive broadcast rights of Nickelodeon Latin America's first original live action series, Skimo. Televisa already airs Nickelodeon's Unfabulous, Drake and Josh, SpongeBob SquarePants, Jimmy Neutron, Danny Phantom and Nick Jr.'s Go-Diego-Go, among others. Skimo, which just wrapped up its second season in Mexico City, is a 30-minute comedy series, featuring the adventures of Fito and Tavo, two teenagers who hit it big when they open their very own snack bar and create the coolest place on the block. CABLEready has been named the official international distributor for Burrud Productions. In conjunction, the company has acquired the worldwide distribution rights to 42 new series and specials from Burrud Productions, to be made available at NATPE. These selections include the following:
Ireland's Channel 6 acquired all of the first season of CBS Paramount International Television's Rachael Ray. The network is planning to debut the series exclusively in the country in February, according to World Screen A bit more on Nickelodeon Latin America and its programming direction this coming year - The network announced a slate of new original programming for Spring 2007. The line-up will include new series developed from non-traditional platforms such as Mr. Meaty, originally appearing as broadband shorts, and Barnyard, inspired from the Nickelodeon feature film, as well as Nick original's El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera and Blue's Room. More new series announcements will made in the coming months. In addition to its new series premieres, the network will also air new episodes of 21 current Nick and Nick Jr. series, including tween properties Drake & Josh, Ned's Declassified, Unfabulous, Zoey 101 and Skimo and animated shows such as My life as a Teenange Robot, Danny Phantom, Avatar, Spongebob, 31 Minutos for Brazil only, and many more, and preschool hits from the Nick Jr. block, Go-Diego-Go!, Wonder Pets and Dougie in Disguise. In 2007, Nickelodeon Latin America will introduce the following Nick originals: Mr. Meaty, Barnyard, El Tigre, and Blue's Room. MTV Networks Latin America will also offer other new series from MTV, Nick, and VH1 including MTV's The Hills and Rob & Big, The N's teen drama South Of Nowhere as well as Nick Jr.'s preschool hit operetta The Wonder Pets!. Also available will be new episodes of returning classics including MTV's Laguna Beach Season 3 (16x30), Nickelodeon's SpongeBob SquarePants and VH1's All Access. Here are some of the new shows:
Granada International's 1-year old Latin American division inked an agreement with HBO Latin America. The deal includes the last Prime Suspect, documentary Prime Suspect: Behind The Scenes, drama All In The Game, criminal drama Cracker: Nine Eleven, art history drama The Impressionists, and documentary series 49 UP, to name a few. 4Kids Entertainment, Inc. is here at NATPE offering its new CGI animated HD series Viva Pinata (52x30 or 104x11) available to international buyers. The company has just completed broadcast TV deals for the series with YTV (Canada), France 3 Television (France), RTL2 (Germany), Canal J Pay Satellite TV (France), Nickelodeon (UK, Netherlands, Spain, Australia & New Zealand - pay TV in all markets except Netherlands), NRK (Norway), SIC (Portugal) and UCOI (Israel). Viva Pinata is animated by Vancouver-based Bardel Entertainment. 4Kids holds the exclusive rights for the series worldwide across broadcast, home video, music and merchandise licensing. CROSS-MARKET: Jennifer Lopez and Alexa Junge and their Nuyorican Prods label are teaming up with Sony Pictures Television to produce a 30-minute comedy for Showtime. Tentatively titled Ayuda (Spanish for help), the series will be set in the LA world of Latina nannies. Alexa will write the script in addition to exec producing with Jennifer and partner Simon Fields according to Variety. Queer Eye will see its last straight guy this summer. The Queer Eye for the Straight Guy series will end its four season run on Bravo following the airing of the 10 eps currently in production. HISPANIC MARKET: Bilingual music/entertainment network LATV has signed a multi-city affiliation deal with Post-Newsweek Stations, Inc. to multicast the 24-hour network on a digital channel on four of the six Post-Newsweek stations. Set to launch in spring 2007, the standard-def channel will be ad-supported, targeting A16-34 Hispanic Americans. At launch, LATV will reach approximately eight million cable and broadcast homes in four of the top 10 U.S. Hispanic markets. LATV's national rollout will begin with Post-Newsweek station affiliates in Houston (KPRC), Miami (WPLG), Orlando (WKMG) and San Antonio (KSAT).At launch, LATV will also be carried on basic cable through its affiliates. In addition, LATV will be carried in LA on KJLA via cable, broadcast and satellite. TeleFutura continued its double-digit ratings growth. In the first week of 2007, TeleFutura's Hispanic A18-34 primetime audience (317,000) grew an additional 11% while its Hispanic A18-49 viewership (516,000) jumped up by 10%. Also in the first 2007 week, Que Dice La Gente? (Family Feud) saw +21% (399,000 vs. 329,000) for Hispanic A18-49 and +14% (226,000 vs. 198,000) for Hispanic A18-34, compared to 4Q2006.Cine de las Estrellas (All-star Movie) started off the year with +15% for Hispanic A18-49 and +17% for Hispanic Adults 18-34, also compared to 4Q2006. LATAM MARKET: MEXICANAL has signed an agreement with Television de Guerrero in Mexico, to bring local Guerrero entertainment, news and sports to U.S. viewers. Guerrero natives are estimated to represent the second largest community of Mexicans living in the U.S. This deal represents the 10th Mexican region of programming shown to U.S. audiences on MEXICANAL. As part of its agreements with Mexican telecommunication company Telcel and Proteus, Universal Studios' Universal Channel division will offer premium content to Latin American mobile customers. The platform will be distributed through www.universalchannel.mobi, per Variety. The content covered in the deal includes House, Law and Order, Monk, Jurassic Park, and more. ARAB MARKET: Comedy Central's Motherload produced a new series, The Watch List, which stars performers of Middle Eastern-American heritage (Arab American and Iranian American), has debuted this week on the network's website. Stand-up comic Dean Obeidallah (co-founder of the Arab-American Comedy Festival) and writer Max Brooks (Saturday Night Live) are the creators and producers. It features stand-up acts and sketch combinations offering a glimpse of the lives of Middle Eastern Americans through comedy from comics such as Ahmed Ahmed, Maz Jobrani, Dean Obeidallah, Aron Kader, Mayson Zayidand others. GAY/LESBIAN MARKET: Logo gave the greenlight of Cruising the Caribbean with Olivia, a 60-minute variety special filmed aboard an Olivia Caribbean cruise. Olivia is a lesbian lifestyle company that specializes in offering travel experiences. Cruising the Caribbean with Olivia will be hosted by First Comes Love's Elvira Kurt and include performances from the Indigo Girls and comediennes Karen Williams, Suzanne Westenhoefer and Vickie Shaw. Airing in spring 2007, the show will include special digital features and news at LOGOonline.com and AfterEllen.com. The show will be produced by Rick Scott of Autonomy Productions. here! has wrapped production on the first season of its new original, scripted series The Lair. The first of 6x30 episodes will premiere on the network in Spring 2007. Set in a small coastal town, the series centers on a young journalist's investigation of the murders of young nameless men with vicious wounds to their necks. EXECUTIVE MOVES: Winglatino has consolidated its New York and LA management under one management to be managed from by the agency's President and CEO, Jackie Bird. The two offices had been run independently in the past. In addition, Jaime Ramirez was named as VP/GM for the West Coast office. In another U.S. Hispanic agency move, creative partner Paco Olavarrieta has left the agency he co-founded 3 years ago, Ole. Following Paco's resignation last month, managing partner Javier Escobedo will continue to be the majority partner while Monica Sanchez, Director/Strategy and Research, will become the minority partner. Carlos Tornell, the new creative director, will work both in the agency's New York and Mexico City offices. Ole also upped Bruni Topete to Director/Online and Guerrilla Marketing.
