Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It's Wednesday, January 17, 2007 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing, from the NATPE Convention in Las Vegas.

Taffy Entertainment has launched Kabillion, a new kid-targeted multi-platform service. Developed in conjunction with Remix Entertainment Ventures, Kabillion is available for free both as a broadband website (
www.kabillion.com) as well as a VOD channel.  An ad-supported network, several sponsors deals have been inked, and will be announced soon.  Initial programming content offered on Kabillion includes animated and live-action kids' series such as the CGI animated series Pet Alien and Mix Master: King of Cards.  To help viewers navigate through the digital service, Kabillion will provide Kablab, a live-action preview show that will also include information about various programming.  The VOD channel will allow viewers to select which episode they want and when and in some cases, the language they want.  The VOD channel is now available to digital cable subscribers nationwide on Comcast Cable systems, with additional systems to be added soon.  Future plans also call for offering mobile, gaming and wireless platforms.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Nickelodeon Latin America (Nick LA) programming highlights announced at NATPE:
  • Nick LA has signed a multi-year deal with Mexico's Televisa Canal 5 for the exclusive broadcast rights of Nickelodeon Latin America's first original live action series, Skimo.  Televisa already airs Nickelodeon's Unfabulous, Drake and Josh, SpongeBob SquarePants, Jimmy Neutron, Danny Phantom and Nick Jr's Go-Diego-Go, among others. Skimo, which just wrapped up its second season in Mexico City, is a 30-minute comedy series, featuring the adventures of Fito and Tavo, two teenagers who hit it big when they open their very own snack bar and create the coolest place on the block.
  • The channel will also launch its new slate of animated programming in spring 2007, which will include Mr. Meaty, Barnyard - based on the Nick movie of the same name, as well as Nick's new original series El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera and Blue's Room and The Wonder Pets!
  • MTV Networks Latin America will also offer other series from MTV and The N:  The Hills (MTV); Rob and Big Black (MTV); South of Nowhere (The N)

DIC Entertainment has inked several international broadcast and home entertainment distribution deals for its new animated series Horseland.  The series has been acquired in Europe by: ZDF/KiKa (German speaking countries); France 5/Teletoon (France); TV2 (Norway); SVT Digital Channel (Sweden); Jetix (Holland); VT4 (Belgium); TG4 (Ireland); S4C (Wales) and Alter TV (Greece).  Additionally, Horseland will bow in the Middle East on Spacetoons (pan regional) and Saran (Turkey), as well as Medcom (Panama) in Central America.  On the home entertainment side, new deals have been completed with Scanbox (Scandinavia), ZDF (German speaking countries) and FMG (Dutch speaking Benelux).

4Kids Entertainment, Inc. is here at NATPE offering its new CGI animated HD series Viva Pi񡴡 (52x30' or 104x11') available to international buyers.  The company has just completed broadcast TV deals for the series with YTV (Canada), France 3 Television (France), RTL2 (Germany), Canal J Pay Satellite TV (France), Nickelodeon (UK, Netherlands, Spain, Australia & New Zealand - pay TV in all markets except Netherlands), NRK (Norway), SIC (Portugal) and UCOI (Israel). Viva Pi񡴡 is animated by Vancouver-based Bardel Entertainment. 4Kids holds the exclusive rights for the series worldwide across broadcast, home video, music and merchandise licensing.

MARKETING/LICENSING

MGA Entertainment, Inc., has introduced a new line of Bratz dolls called, Bratz Magic Hair.  As the name implies, the new line includes dolls with long hair that can be styled with the aim of encouraging imaginative play.  The dolls feature "special Bratz memory hair" that will allow kids to crimp, curl, and color and easily do up the dolls' hair.  The new line includes Yasmin, Cloe, Sasha and Jade  each going for $25.99.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Anne Globe has been appointed DreamWorks Animation new Head of Worldwide Marketing and Consumer Products.  Globe, a senior member of DreamWorks Animation's executive team, takes over the reins from Terry Press, the current head who is stepping down from her role.  Press will continue to work with the studio, as well as take on other non-competitive industry projects.  Having joined DreamWorks in 1996, most recently Globe served as the studio's head of worldwide consumer products and promotions since 2005.

Sylvie Barro has been appointed Head of Development, SIP Animation.  Barro will be responsible for developing the company's new animated projects through the pilot.  Previously, Barro was story-editor and line-producer for a number of SIP Animation's TV series (A.T.O.M. Alpha Teens on Machines, Seasons 1 & 2).

Sababa Toys has merged with Front Porch Classics.  While Sababa Toys and Front Porch Classics will remain distinct brands, moving forward the merged company will operate as Sababa Group Inc. and will have its headquarters in NYC.  Bob Wann, Co-Founder, Sababa Toys, will be Chairman and CEO for the combined company and Stone Newman, Co-Founder of Sababa Toys, will continue as President, Sababa Toys and oversee Sales, Marketing and New Business Development for the combined company.  Helen Rockey, CEO of Front Porch Classics will become Vice Chairman and Erika Cottrell, VP of Front Porch Classics will become President of Front Porch Classics in the combined entity. Ron Hayes will head up Product Design and Development, Arthur Levine will be CFO and Richard Gill will head up International, for the combined company.

K'NEX Industries has named Diane Adams as SVP/Global Sales & Marketing and Barbara Rentschler as VP/Global Marketing.  Adams, who had been VP/Sales, will be responsible for development of sales strategy for US, Canada and international markets, and she will oversee sales forecasting and analysis, development of retailer relationships and for all marketing efforts. Rentschler joined K'NEX in 2002, most recently serving as Sr. Director/Marketing.  In her new position she will be responsible for domestic, educational and international marketing initiatives.

RATINGS

Disney Channel was the top basic cable network for the entire day on Friday, January 12, 2007, with K6-11 (970,000) and Tweens 9-14 (877,000).  That evening earned the channel its highest-rated Primetime ever with K6-11 (2.9 million), which included the premiere of both a new original movie and series.
  • The bow of Jump In (8-9:30p) became the channel's most watched Original Movie among K6-11 (3.7 million).  The movie was the top show on cable and broadcast TV with K6-11 and Tweens 9-14 (3.4 million), growing on a quarter-hour basis, start-to-finish, up by +28% and +34% respectively.
  • The live-action series Cory in the House (9:30-10p) bowed as the channel's most watched original series premiere in its history with K6-11 (3.4 million) and Tweens 9-14 (3.4 million), and was the top show in the time period vs. cable channels.
