Good Morning.  It's Friday, January 12, 2007, and this is your first early morning International & Multicultural briefing.

NATPE 2007 Shopping List - The Shopping List will be posted later on this morning at our website, www.cynopsis.com on the International & Multicultural Home Page (go to Editions tab at the top of the page, and down to Int'l & MCE).  It will also be sent to you in a second email this morning.  And for those of you travelling to Las Vegas for the market, here's some information that may be helpful:  the average high temperatures for next week are in the low 30's, with a chance of snow showers. Temperatures only begin to warm up by Wednesday and Thursday when the high's get into the low 40's.  Evening temperatures can dip as low as single digits ... so don't leave your winter coat at home this year!  Safe travels!

INTERNATIONAL MARKET:

Das Vierte, NBC Universal Global Networks' German free-TV channel, will launch a new weekday kids programming block, from February 12 from 6-9a. Targeted to kids/tweens 3-13, the block will feature shows from Your Family Entertainment AG's (YFE) library including, Timmy Goes to School, Marvin, Tap-dancing Horse, Rotten Ralph, Turtle Island, Rescue Heroes and Adventures of Papyrus.

In other YFE news, the company has also completed license deals for two of its other series:
  • KI.KA, the ARD/ZDF kid's channel, has picked up all 26 episodes of Gloria's House, which it plans to begin airing this year.
  • Junior.TV, a pay-TV channel, has acquired the rights to the first season of Dragon Hunters, in a deal that also includes the shows Fix & Foxi, Gnarfs and Generation O! Produced by Futurikon, the French animation studio/production company, Dragon Hunters will be broadcast on the Premiere platform.

Animation company BKN International AG's U.S. subsidiaries BKN Home Entertainment Inc and BKN New Media Inc have inked license deals in Canada. Indie home entertainment distribution company Morningstar Entertainment Inc signed for DVD distribution rights across Canada while and Tele-Quebec (Societe de Telediffusion du Quebec) has secured a new major free-TV broadcast deal for the broadcast of BKN's CGI HD animated features.  BKN's contract with Toronto-based Morningstar grants them the rights to distribute the following 14 new titles throughout Canada: Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves: The Lost Scimitar of Arabia (1x72), Kong  Return to the Jungle (1x80), Legend of the Dragon Volume 1 (13x24), Legend of the Dragon Volume 2 (13x24), Legend of the Dragon Volume 3 (13x24), A Christmas Carol: Scrooge's Ghostly Tale (1x48), Robin Hood: Quest for the King (1x48), Jungle Book: Rikki-Tikki-Tavi to the Rescue (1x48), The Prince and the Pauper: Double Trouble (1x48), Alice in Wonderland: What's the Matter with Hatter (1x48), The Three Musketeers: Saving the Crown (1x48), Kong: The Animated Series Volume 1 (14x24), Kong: The Animated Series Volume 2 (13x24), and Kong: The Animated Series Volume 3 (13x24).  BKN's contract with Tele-Quebec is for the broadcast in French of 6 x 48 minute CGI HD animated features including A Christmas Carol: Scrooge's Ghostly Tale, Robin Hood: Quest for the King, Jungle Book: Rikki-Tikki-Tavi to the Rescue, The Prince and the Pauper: Double Trouble, Alice in Wonderland: What's the Matter with Hatter, and The Three Musketeers: Saving the Crown.

Guinness World Records TV (GWR TV) has signed a number of deals across Asia. ABC 5 in the Philippines has acquired all 52x30 episodes of Ultimate Guinness World Records, 18x60 of Guinness World Records: UK, and a 120-minute special, Guinness World Records: 50 Years, 50 Records.  Indonesia's ANTV and Vietnam's Universal Ace have both acquired Ultimate Guinness World Records. RTB in Brunei has acquired 52x60 episodes of Guinness World Records: Primetime, Guinness World Records: UK and Guinness World Records: 50 Years, 50 Records. Cambodia's CTN has acquired Ultimate Guinness World Records and Guinness World Records: UK.

This March, Discovery Channel will launch an 11-part series called Planet Earth in hi-def. The series promises to show viewers never-before-seen animal behaviors, view of locations captured by cameras for the first time, and narrated by Sigourney Weaver. Planet Earth is produced by the BBC, and will air on successive Sundays on both Discovery Channel and Discovery HD Theatre, beginning March 25.

Foothill Entertainment picked up the global TV and home entertainment distribution rights to Hip-Hop Kidz: It's a Beautiful Thing.  Released straight to DVD, the movie is based on the real-life Hip-Hop Kidz dance group's drive to produce a video in two weeks for a competition.  The program is exec produced by Mark Bacino and Jim Green.  The film's DVD was just released in October by Genius Products in addition a soundtrack CD.  Other merchandising and outreach events are in Foothill's plans for the brand.

FOX Life has launched with 18-hour daily programming in Poland on Polsat Digital Platform's Relax Mix package.  This is the Fox International Channels network's first launch in an the Eastern European territory according to World Screen.  It will air Polish-language first run and current TV series and reality shows.

HISPANIC MARKET:

Buenavision, a new Spanish-language station, is expected to debut in the South Floridian market on April 1 (no, not a joke) on WFUN. The new Caribevision Holdings station's programming will include telenovelas, interactive video games, reality shows, and a Haitian newscast, according to the Miami Herald.  Buenavision will be the seventh Spanish-language station in this particular market.

Univision Radio announced the addition of eight stations that will carry the nationally syndicated morning show, Piolin por La Manana (Piolin in the Morning), bringing the show's reach to 24 markets.  The morning show will soon be heard on New York's WZAA FM, Chicago's WPPN FM, San Diego's KLNV FM, San Antonio's KCOR AM, El Paso's KBNA FM, Albuquerque's KJFA FM, McAllen's KBGT AM, and a 60-minute Saturday show in Miami's WRTO FM.  In addition, Univision Radio's radio talent, Luis Jimenez, will debut in several top markets including Chicago, Dallas, Fresno, San Francisco/San Jose and Los Angeles.

According to HispanicMagazineMonitor, advertising in Hispanic magazines in December 2006 totaled $25.8 million, a 10.1% increase from previous year. Ad pages were up modestly by 1.8% to 1,286.04 for the month. Magazines posting the largest year-over-year increases in ad dollars in December included Sports Illustrated Latino (+52.3%), Tu Ciudad Los Angeles (+48.6%), Selecciones (+33.8%), Ser Padres (+27.4%), Vanidades (+25.7%), Siempre Mujer (+19.3%) and People en Espanol (+18.6%).  Magazines with year-to-year declines in ad dollars in December included Hispanic Magazine (-28.4%), Cosmopolitan en Espanol, (-18%), Hispanic Business (-8.0%), and Selecta (-6.1%).  From January through December of 2006, ad dollars in Hispanic magazines totaled $243.9 million, a 14.0% increase from previous year. Ad pages, however, were basically flat in 2006 (+0.3%) to 12,418.92 for the time period.  Spending in the key automotive category was weak all year and decreased by 7.8% for the year as a whole. The weakness in automotive spending (also weak in the general market) was shared across the board by nearly all auto-makers. Offsetting the decline in auto ad dollars, ad spending in personal care products-related categories rose by 27.4% to reach $50.6 million in 2006. The two largest segments, Haircare (+40%) and Cosmetics (+35.7%), both saw large increases in ad spending. Top personal care advertisers in Hispanic magazines in 2006 were: L'Oreal USA ($10.9 million), Procter & Gamble ($10.6 million), Johnson & Johnson ($4.1 million), Unilever ($3.9 million), and Estee Lauder ($2.5 million).  The December, 2006 update showed that there were 661 active brands, 485 active advertisers, 1,286.04 total ad pages (+1.8% from 2005), and $25.8 million total ad revenue (+10.1% from 2005).  The 2006 full-year stats show 2,415 active brands, 1,313 active advertisers, 12,418.92 total ad pages (+0.3% from 2005), and $243.9 million total ad revenue (+14.0% from 2005).  New advertising activity reported included a total of 119 new brands/campaigns totaling155.95 ad pages and $3.3 million in new spending.  As for advertisers, 53 new advertisers (parent-company level) totaled 61.48 Ad pages and $1.1 million in new spending.

AFRICAN AMERICAN MARKET:

TV One is all set to launch a new original series, I Married A Baller (9x30), in April. This new reality series will take a behind the scenes into the personal lives of the wives of sports figures and their husbands as they maneuver the world of fame, fortune, sports, marriage and families with particular attention to the lives of Taj and Eddie George. I Married A Baller is produced for TV One by Turner/Love Productions with exec producers Shannon Love and Datari Turner.

In more TV One news, the network added more than one million new subscriber households in December 2006, according to Nielsen Media Research universe estimates, growing from 33.8 million households to nearly 34.9 from December 2006 to January 2007. TV One increased its subscriber base by 42% from January 2006  January 2007.

New York's WLIW will debut An Evening with Della Reese on February 4 at 4p in honor of Black History Month.  The show takes historical look into the life of Della Reese, from her beginnings as a gospel singer to jazz performer, talk show host and actress.

GAY/LESBIAN MARKET:

here! has finished production on the original film Shelter, written and directed by filmmaker Jonah Markowitz.  This marks the first in a series of independent scripted projects here! will be producing. In addition, here! Films has secured worldwide distribution rights to the romantic drama. Shelter centers on a young San Pedro man who gives up on his dream of art school in order to provide for his family.When an attraction to his best friend's brother turns into more, he must choose between continuing to put others first or fighting for what he wants for himself.

EXECUTIVE MOVES:

CNBC named John Casey as Director/News and Programming, CNBC Asia Pacific.  Based in Singapore, he will head up the news and programming division of the network in this region.  His responsibilities include supervising the development of content, talent and program schedule for CNBC Asia Pacific, ensuring the high quality of CNBC's daily output, and developing new, compelling content for CNBC's broadcast, mobile and broadband platforms.  John was previously Deputy Head of News and the Executive Producer, Worldwide Exchange and Power Lunch, at CNBC Europe.  He will report to Jeremy Pink, President and Managing Director/CNBC Asia Pacific.

LIVINGtv upped Amy Barham to Head/Acquisitions for LIVINGtv, LIVINGtv2 and ftn. She will report into Director/Programming, Claudia Rosencrantz, working closely on all matters relating to the channels' acquisitions and international marketplace. Amy was recently Senior Acquisitions Executive for the LIVINGtv channels and Ftn.
