Good morning! It's
Tuesday, February 1, 2005,
and this is your first early morning
Multi-Cultural
briefing.
HISPANIC MARKET:
Univision Communications Inc. and Time Warner
Cable (TWC) inked a multi-year deal to bring the Spanish-language
media company's Univision Network, TeleFutura Network and
Galavision Network to the cable television provider's 11 million
subscribers across the US. TeleFutura Network will be rolled out to
TWC's Corpus Christi, Raleigh, San Diego, Harlingen, Laredo, Palm Springs
and Philadelphia customers. Galavision Network will be made available to
Waco, Rochester, Raleigh, Milwaukee, Greensboro, Northeast and Western
Ohio and Nebraska TWC viewers. Already offered through TWC's base
markets, Univision Network will continue to be carried in such key
Hispanic metro areas as LA, New York, Houston, San Antonio and San
Diego.
The Lab, a new Miami-based Hispanic advertising agency, is
opening its doors this week with a focus on branded entertainment and
non-traditional brand communications. Created by creative exec
Hector Prado and TV production exec Pablo Trench, The Lab will actually
be headquartered on a boat (brainstorming at sea may be an
option).
NBC Universal Cable is debuting Telemundo Puerto Rico today
throughout Cablevision's New York metro area (1.3+ million iO
digital cable customers). The new Spanish-language cable network
will air 35+ hours of programming a week with live news updates from
Telemundo Puerto Rico (WKAQ), Puerto Rican programs, sports, music
videos, movies and specials. Telemundo Puerto Rico will be included
in Cablevision's iO en espanol programming package in other select
areas.
AIM Tell-A-Vision will bring McDonald's-sponsored Latino
entertainment, cinema, film festivals and DVD weekly segments to American
Latino TV and LatiNation audiences in February. The McDonald's
Cine on American Latino show will air Latino-themed films while
McDonald's CineNation on LatiNation will broadcast a wider
variety of movies from independent companies, film festivals, indie
filmmakers in addition to recently-released DVDs and TV programs.
Both weekly shows are produced by Maximas Productions with Renzo Devia as
supervising producer.
Internet radio network Live365 and Spanish-language broadband
network PlanetaTV.com are collaborating on a joint venture to
create up to 150 Spanish-speaking Internet radio stations to be
made available free to listeners on PlanetaTV's broadband portals.
The stations will include a wide variety of Latino music including
tropical, salsa, rock en Espanol as well as pop, rock and hip-hop.
PlanetaTV will cross promote Live365's build-your-own-radio-station
product on its US, Spain and Latin America websites.
Latam
Market: The Top 10 Us Series On Broadcast TV In
Mexico charts has been postponed until tomorrow's Cynopsis
MCE.
AFRICAN AMERICAN MARKET:
BET and the Kaiser Family Foundation are
continuing their alliance on the public education initiative Rap-It-Up.
The effort was coordinated to educate BET's audience about HIV/AIDS
through information for young adults about s#xual health issues and
testing for African Americans. BET, the Black AIDS
Institute, and the Kaiser Family Foundation will debut their second
Rap-It-Up/Black AIDS Short Subject (RIU/BASS) Film Competition on
February 7. The network will also replay last year's winners,
Walking on Sunshine, on February 6 at 3 pm and Tangy's Song! at 3:30 pm.
ASIAN/INDIAN MARKET:
Walt Disney Television International (WDTI) inked
a Korean carriage deal with CJ CableNet's digital platform
Hello D for WDTI's preschool Playhouse Disney. The channel
debuts today. This follows up on Hello D's release on Korean MSO
Qrix Communications' Big Box Cable TV service. There are
approximately 3.5 million preschool-aged Korean children.
MIDDLE EAST MARKET:
Al-Jazeeramay be looking to privatize its
asset as its home country and main financier, Qatar, is being prodded
by such US toppers as VP Dick Cheney and Defense Secretary Donald H.
Rumsfeld to take some action against the Middle Eastern news
network. In addition to the heat the network is picking up from US
officials, Al-Jazeera is also angering other Middle Eastern governments
with its criticism of Arab leaders. According to the New York
Times, the network has added new editorial board members in order to
seek out a buyer.
GAY/LESBIAN MARKET:
WE (Women's Entertainment) will present an
original 30-minute special titled Love Files on February 13 at 10
pm. Delving into the theory behind and nature of love, the Orchard
Films-produced show will include relationship experts, celebrity couples
and interviews with both straight and gay couples.
INTERNATIONAL MARKET:
Italy's Rai and Fox Life networks
picked up ABC's Desperate Housewives from Buena Vista
International Television (BVITV). The series will debut on
basic cable channel Fox Life on February 17 as Desperate Housewives: I
Segreti di Wisteria Lane with the Rai launch scheduled for the
fall.
