HISPANIC MARKET:
Bela Broadcasting, LLC's Spanish-language
KBEH/LA and KMOH/Phoenix are debuting a fresh new teen
programming block. The family channels will bring in new eps of the
music entertainment program "LA Mix" airing weekdays between
4-6 pm. Another new show, JAMZ will launch on the channels in
March.
LATAM MARKET:
MTV Networks Latin America's has assigned
campaigns to two Latin American ad agencies to bring a more local flavor
to its advertising by naming Colombia's J&M Comunicaciones,
Ltda. and Venezuela's Regional Network, C.A. to head up
efforts for MTV and Nickelodeon. In addition to media advertising,
the networks' will branch into local programming and events.
AFRICAN AMERICAN MARKET:
With his five-year contract expiring this year,
BET founder and CEORobert Johnson reportedly has decided
to leave his position heading up the network's daily operations.
According to the Wall Street Journal, he will center more of his
attention on his other businesses including the Charlotte Bobcats and
other real estate, hotels and restaurants enterprises. Robert
Johnson sold BET to Viacom in 2000 for $3 billion. Debra Lee, BET's COO
will run the daily operations.
BET and its BET Jazz: The Jazz Channel will air several
special programs in honor of Black History Month. The lineup on BET
includes:
Celebration of Gospel (February 24 at 9 pm): The fifth annual
show includes such names as Ruben Studdard, Fantasia, Pastor Donnie
McClurkin, Yolanda Adams, BeBe Winans, Angie Stone, Smokie Norful, Mary
Mary, Kirk Franklin, Fred Hammond, Pastor Shirley Caesar, J. Moss, Dr.
Bobby Jones, The Clark Sisters, Kiki Sheard, Tye Tribbett and more.
The Cousin Jeff Chronicles (February 28 at 7:30 pm): This new
quarterly forum and talk show will be hosted by BET's “Cousin Jeff"
Johnson with a focus on social and political issues. The debut show
on February 28 will touch on "The Bridge is Over - The Gap between
the Civil Rights and Hip Hop Generations."
Book of Love - The Definitive Reason Why Men are Dogs
(February 14 at 9 pm): This BET Pictures/Strange Fruit Films
made-for-television production takes a humorous documentary look at
relationships turned sour and love lost.
The Jacksons: An American Dream (February 21, 22 and 23 at 8
pm): The mini-series takes a look at the famous and infamous tale of this
well-known entertainment family.
BET Jazz: The Jazz Channel will bring its viewers a variety of music
programs to its viewers in February:
Seal: Live From The 2004 Bermuda Music Festival (February 6 at
8 am, 4 pm, 10 pm with encores): This Seal performance from Bermuda is
hosted by Maxine Williams.
The Jazz Foundation of America Presents "A Great Night in
Harlem" (February 8 at 12 pm, 8 pm, 12 am with encores): The
Apollo Theater-based annual fundraiser event with The Jazz Foundation of
America is set to pay tribute to Ray Charles with Hill Harper hosting.
Angie Stone: The Stone Love Tour (February 13 at 8 am, 4
pm, 10 pm): The program showcases R&B singer Angie Stone.
Anthony Hamilton: "Comin' From Where I'm From"
(February 20 at 8 am): Anthony Hamilton's performance from Atlanta.
Hasbro, Inc.'s G.I. Joe brand will honor WWII First Lieutenant
John R. Fox this month with the release of a 12'' G.I. Joe action
figure in his likeness. The 92nd Infantry Division, known as the Buffalo
Soldiers, was an African-American division that fought in WWII. One
of the division's soldiers, First Lieutenant John R. Fox was attached to
the 366th US Infantry Regiment. Fox was among the first group of
African-Americans posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor by President
Bill Clinton in 1997 for sacrificing his own life to save the lives of
his fellow infantrymen. Caught in a surprise attack, Fox radioed to his
comrades to have the artillery fire aimed toward his position so that his
division could escape. The John Fox G.I. Joe figure is the latest
in a series that commemorates both famous and lesser known Medal of Honor
recipients including Audie Murphy, Douglas MacArthur and Jimmy Doolittle.
ASIAN MARKET:
Warner Bros. International Cinemas (WBIC) scored
its fourth Chinese deal with a new venture with Shenzhen International
Trust & Investment to create five cinema multiplexes in the
Shenzhen province. As part of the agreement, WBIC will retain a 51%
hold in the collaborative project. WBIC has already inked
agreements with the Shanghai United Circuit, developer Dalian Wanda Group
and Guangzhou Jinyi Film and TV Investment Company. All in all, the
corporation hopes to have 15 multiplexes up and running by the end of
2005 and 135 movie screens by 2007.
INTERNATIONAL MARKET:
Discovery Communications is collaborating with
North Ireland's Brian Waddell Productions Ltd. (BWPL) on a new
co-production documenting Steve Fossett's February 8 solo non-stop
flight around the world in the Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer
departing from Salina, Kansas. The documentary will include a
cockpit and tailfin camera, footage from a chaser plane, Steve's video
diary and pictures of the pilot from new NASA technology. The doc
will air later in 2005 on the Travel Channel in the US and Discovery
Channel internationally (excluding the US).
The BBC/TNT co-production The Grid was picked up by
Belgium's VRT, Denmark's DR, Finland's YLE, France's
France2, Holland's HMG/RTL, Iceland's TV2,
Norway's NRK and Sweden's SVT. The spy miniseries is
produced by the UK's Carnival Films and the US' Fox TV Studios.
etc., ALL MARKETS:
Bromley Communications' Vice Chairperson Aida Levitan
has left the agency as Bromley underwent a Miami office downsizing of
20 employees. This move follows almost one year after Aida's
Publicis Sanchez & Levitan and Bromley merged to become the US'
largest Hispanic agency ($276 million in billings, $29 million in
revenue). Aida retained the position of co-chair and CCO at Bromley
as well as the Miami office's president under the merger.
Sony Pictures Television International upped Superna Kalle
to VP/International Networks. She will be responsible
for working with India's SET and MAX, AXN Asia, Animax Asia, AXN Japan
and Animax Japan as well creating distribution opportunities in the US.
Superna will work with Martha Eberts, SVP of international networks and
development.
Clear Channel Entertainment Television upped Dennis Spencer
to SVP/Managing Director of International Distribution
andProgramming. He will oversee the expansion of CCETV
international projects with a particular focus on music and
entertainment. Dennis was previously VP/managing director of
international and programming for CCETV. He will work with Steve
Sterling, SVP of Clear Channel Entertainment TV.
