Good morning! It's
Friday, February 4, 2005,
and this is your first early morning
Multi-Cultural
briefing.
HISPANIC MARKET:
US-based digital media/e-commerce company 365
Inc. inked a 2-year deal with Fox Sports en Espanol that
includes collaborations during the network's coverage of the soccer
tournaments Copa Libertadores, Copa Sudamericana, Copa Maya/Copa
Campeones and Mexican and Argentinean 1st Division games. 365 Inc.
will offer up official team apparel for 30 international league and US
soccer teams with Fox Sports en Espanol generating direct advertising for
365 Inc. by pointing viewers towards the online soccer merchandiser for
official clothing. More info at
www.worldSoccerShop.com and
www.tiendafutbolmundial.com.
AFRICAN AMERICAN MARKET:
Turner Broadcasting System's regional network
Turner South will celebrate Black History Month by airing
short segments with well-known African-American celebs describing how
they view the South as part of Turner South's My South marketing
campaign. (The 2004 campaign includes TV, print and promos
depicting Turner South as the Southern network.)
Showtime will spotlight African-American AIDS Awareness Day
on February 7 with the airing of Shouting Silent at 10 pm.
Centering on the South African HIV/AIDS epidemic, the film tells the tale
of a daughter's loss of her mother to AIDS in the late 1990s and the
struggle she and many other young women endured to raise themselves and
siblings. Shouting Silent is part of the network's and Viacom's
3-year old Know HIV/AIDS program.
Simmons Lathan Media Group (SLMG) is releasing a new DVD series
directly into the DVD market centering on the inspirational stories of
contemporary African Americans. The Russell Simmons Higher Self
DVD Series is a joint effort with The HistoryMakers (US non-profit
organization chronicling the histories of famous African Americans) with
Def Filmmaker Nancy Oey writing, directing and co-producing and Image
Entertainment in charge of distribution.
This week UPN's Charlotte television station will welcome a
new 30-minute talk show titled Not Just The Blues.
Hosted by Dr. Denyse Hicks-Ray (author of "The Pain Didn't Start
Here - Trauma and Violence in the African American Community"), Not
Just The Blues will focus on mental health issues in the African American
community through information on symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and
services. The show will air Thursday at 9:30 am on UPN- 46.
Correction
: Unstoppable: A Conversation with Melvin Van Peebles, Gordon Parks
and Ossie Davis is a Black STARZ! production, not a Black
Filmmaker Foundation, Time Warner Inc., BE@T (Black employees at Time)
and Black STARZ! co-production as reported in yesterday's Cynopsis
MCE. The four companies are collaborating on the New York
screenings on February 9 and 10.
INDIAN/ASIAN MARKET:
Twentieth Century Fox is closing the doors to
its Mumbai-based Indian distribution division after 73 years and
financial losses for the last 4 years. The arm's head, Aditya
Shastri, recently left to take on the position of CEO for UTV's motion
pictures division. Rumor has it that Fox may be starting up an
internal audit due to financial irregularities suspicions.
CRC Jianian Cultural Development Company Ltd., a new joint venture
between LA-based AIM Group, LA-based PanPacific Ventures,
Inc. and China Record Corporation (CRC), is being formed to
distribute Chinese music internationally. The new company
will retain the exclusive global rights for the publishing and
distribution of Chinese music including CRC's 65,000-title catalog of
time-honored Chinese ethnic, opera and folk music. In addition to
the music distribution channels, CRC Jianian has plans to integrate
movie, TV and music productions in China into its initiatives as well as
present musical/cultural 2008 Olympic Games events in Beijing. AIM
Group will provide the financing for CRC Jianian with offices set up in
LA and Beijing and reps in Shanghai, Chengdu, Shenzhen and
Guangzhou. CRC is the oldest, largest government-owned record label
in mainland China.
In addition to the deal mentioned above, Cultural Development Company
Ltd., has signed an agreement with BMI (performing rights
organization) to rep its catalog in the US. This is the first time
Chinese songs have been registered with a performing rights organization
internationally.
GAY/LESBIAN MARKET:
A new show on here! will showcase 12+ gay
and lesbian couples, their love stories and their trials and
tribulations. here! Together will premiere on here! on
February 14 (of course) with rebroadcasts for the rest of the month.
INTERNATIONAL MARKET:
The US TV drama House will make its way to
the UK's Hallmark Channel through a recent basic rights licensing
deal between the network and NBC Universal International
Distribution. Fox premiered the show in 2004 starring Hugh
Laurie as infectious diseases specialist Dr Gregory House, currently
airing on Tuesday nights following American Idol. Hallmark will air
House in the UK in April.
Animal Planet ordered up a 2-hour special tentatively titled
Jane Goodall's When Animals Talk from the UK's Tigress
Productions. Set the air in June on Animal Planet, the program
will center in on the special bonds between humans and animals and what
occurs when they attempt to communicate with each other.
The Polish-language channel Kino Polska has been picked by
EchoStar Communications' DISH Network DTH platform as the
newest addition to its international networks cache. In addition to
the 8-10 daily movies, the channel will broadcast several series
including The Portrets (documentary series about well-known Poles) and In
Illusion (historical series) and Kinoffteka (series highlighting artists
and producers). Kino Polska will join Polsat 2 International, TVN
24 and the itvn channel as the fourth Polish channel on the DTH platform.
etc., ALL MARKETS:
In a follow-up story to a January 28 Cynopsis
MCE story, New York's WQHT (Hot 97 FM) and Emmis
Communications have committed to firing two of its employees
connected to the now infamous "The Tsunami Song" that
aired on the Miss Jones and the Hot 97 morning team show on January
24. In the parody's wake, the company terminated morning show
producer Rick Del Gado (took part in writing, producing and airing the
song) and morning show personality Todd Lynn (made racially insensitive
comments). In addition to the cuts, the company is donating $1
million to Give2Asia for tsunami-related efforts. Various other
employees and on-air personalities received 2 week suspensions with pay
docketed for Give2Asia with Miss Info standing alone with no
suspension.
Hoy named AnibalTorres as
VP/General Manager of its New York edition. He was
previously the publisher of Spanish-language weekly El Sentinel published
