Good morning! It's
Monday, February 7, 2005,
and this is your first early morning
Multi-Cultural
briefing.
HISPANIC MARKET:
Diageo's Johnnie Walker will embark on its
first online advertising campaign geared towards US Hispanics with
new ads appearing on Yahoo and Yahoo en Espanol. (Internet-based ad
spending to attract the Hispanic web surfers has seen an increase from
$10 million in 2002 to $75 million last year). The Johnnie Walker
motto “Keep on walking” will not and has not been translated in the
company's international and Hispanic ads.
MasMusica TeVe Network added a new Spanish-language affiliate as
El Paso's K40FW joins its roster. The Hispanic community
makes up 88% of El Paso's 782,500 population (second most densely
population Hispanic area nationwide).
The California State Lottery has continued to hone in on its final
picks for the state lottery's Hispanic ad account with three
finalist making the cut so far. Casanova Pendrill (incumbent),
Castells & Asociados and Dieste Harmel & Partners are still in
the running.
LATAM MARKET:
Spain's Filmax Entertainment is planning
to debut its production efforts in the Latin American television arena
with its new label Filmax Latin. The new division will open
a Miami office in connection with this new Hispanic market
endeavor. Filmax has been behind such films as Jaume Balaguero's
Darkness.
Argentina and Venezuela are banding together to build a
South American state television news network namedTeleSur
to debut this spring from Caracas. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez
will head up the TeleSur effort with the country pitching in $3 million
to help set up the new network to rival CNN in South America according to
Chavez. Argentina's Media Secretariat will own 20% of the project
while bringing in 100 hours each month of domestic news content,
providing satellite link-ups, paying for a local studio for broadcasts,
employing staff and enabling carriage on Argentina's cable and broadcast
system networks. TeleSur will employ correspondents in Bogota,
Buenos Aires, LA, Lima and Rio de Janeiro. Much of the programming
will come from the two countries' state broadcasters, Canal 7 and
Venezolana de Television (VTV), with additional content from independent
producers. Other countries such as Brazil and Uruguay may join in the
near future.

new television and radio ad campaign against the fast food chain's
alleged unethical slaughtering practices and use of growth-promoting
medication by asking African Americans to shun the restaurant until they
deal with the treatment issues.
INDIAN/ASIAN MARKET:
Discovery Networks Asia ordered up a HD (high
definition) documentary series to chronicle Singapore's history from the
UK's indie Lion Television. History of Singapore
(4x60) is destined for the Discovery Channel's Asian network in honor of
the city's fortieth independence day anniversary. In addition to
interviews with political leaders and experts, the documentary will
include footage and a computer-generated reconstruction of Singapore's
history. Filming is set to start this month with a fourth quarter
airing date anticipated for the project.
The new anime series Eureka 7 is being co-produced by Original
Bones Project and Bandai Entertainment. With 50 x 30 min
episodes of Eureka 7 scheduled to be produced, the series will premiere
on Japanese TV, April 17 of this year. In conjunction with the
debut of the series in Japan a Eureka 7 manga series will be introduced
in the March issue of the Japanese magazine Shounen Ace, with a Eureka 7
PlayStation 2 game slated for release summer 2005. According to the
report Bandai Ent. has plans to launch the property in the US but no date
or details have been announced as of yet.

story of tween friends, a boy, Imamiya Satoshi (known as Sasshi) and a
girl, Asahina Arumi (Arumi), and their lives growing up in and around the
Abenobashi Shopping Arcade (aka mall) in Osaka, Japan. The mall
becomes a sort of alternative reality/videogame for the two, and there
they travel from one reality/game to another trying to capture characters
in an effort to return to their real lives. Created by GAINAX (Neon
Genesis Evangelion and other anime series), Magical Shopping Arcade
Abenobashi is an ADV Films release. ADV also released the series on
DVD in the US.
