Good morning! It's
Wednesday, February 9, 2005,
and this is your first early morning
Multi-Cultural
briefing.
HISPANIC MARKET:
The first ever Emmys En Espanol will take
place on June 3 in San Antonio through the National Television
Academy (NTA). The brand new event's nominating committee will
include key US Hispanics in the Spanish-language television arena.
Chaired by Raul Mateu (SVP/William Morris Agency), the committee will be
Antoinette Zel (Telemundo Networks Group's EVP/strategic planning),
Gilbert Davila (The Walt Disney Company's VP of multicultural marketing),
Jacqueline Hernandez-Fallous (People en Espanol's publisher), Lisa Quiroz
(Time Warner's VP of corporate responsibility), Noelia Rodriguez
(Univision Communications' VP of corporate communications), Manolo Vidal
(Vidal Partnership's president and CEO) and Daniel Villanueva (Bastion
Capital Corporation's managing partner).
Advertising in the Spanish-language television arena is
expected to grow by9.4% this year as compared to last year
according to TNS Media Intelligence's 2005 full-year
forecasts. This compares with a general market full-year
increase of 5.1% to $150.5 billion and cable network television predicted
to show a 9.3% ad spending growth. The other growth predictions by
media type include internet with 11.2%, outdoor ads with 8.2%, consumer
and Sunday magazines with 6.1%, syndication television with 5.7%,
newspapers with 5.1%, radio with 5.1%, network television with 2.9%, B2B
magazines with 1.5% and spot television with 0.6%.
Other Spanish-language industry leaders suggest the uptick in ad sales
revenue this year will be closer to 15%, following previous years'
average increases of approx $150 million annually. The Hispanic
TV/Spanish language market last year brought in about $1.1
billion.
LATAM MARKET:
TV Azteca's continuous SEC fraud
allegation saga has received a reprieve of sorts. The Mexican
network was awarded 4 months time to prepare its defense against
the charges until May 31. A little background info…the network and
its chairman Ricardo Salinas were charged for an alleged attempt to hide
the chairman's part in a debt agreement with the mobile phone company
Unefon that supposedly netted him $109 million.
AFRICAN AMERICAN MARKET:
NAACP's 36th Annual Image Awards will
include the presentation of the 2005 Chairman's Award to Sen. Barack
Obama (D-Ill.). The show will be broadcast as part of the special
Created Equal on March 25 at 8 pm on FOX. The
ceremony itself will take place on March 19 in LA with the Hall of Fame
Award to be presented to Oprah Winfrey.
ASIAN MARKET:
CABLEready inked several Asian deals with Korea's
Joongang Broadcasting and Sun Media, Chinese distributor
Leland International and Thailand's UBC. Joongang's Q
Channel picked up Film Fakers (6x60) in addition to its new Golf Channel
acquiring Peter Longo's Circle of Golf (1x60). Sun Media grabbed the
fishing/travel series Sportsman's Journal. Leland took Maternity
Ward (49x60), Resident Life (13x60), The Critical Hour (10x60) and more
segments of Medical Detectives (30x30). CABLEready sold Forensic
Files (42x30), JFK: Investigation Reopened (1x60), American Photography
(3x60), Mysterious Encounters (13x30) and National Guard Championships
(1x60) to UBC.
Japan's OLC/Rights Entertainment has acquired the broadcast,
video/DVD and publishing rights to Decode Entertainment's
preschool animated series Franny's Feet. ORE has already
inked a publishing deal with Petit Grand publications for a series
of Franny's Feet books slated to be published spring 2005. ORE also
plans to take the series to the Tokyo Animation Festival this March in
search of other partners in all home video/DVD, broadcast and
publishing. Finally, ORE has also acquired Franny's Feet
Interactive, an animated preschool online project produced by DECODE
Interactive and developed in conjunction with Family.ca, ABC Australia
and The Bell New Media Fund.
GAY/LESBIAN:
Filmmaker Call: Power Up has started
accepting applications for its 5th Annual Filmmaking Grant Program
with a new bend on the program this year as it changes the grant films
from shorts to a feature. The non-profit organization works to
promote lesbians in the entertainment arena with its grant program geared
towards developing, financially backing, producing and distributing the
chosen films. Writers and directors can find more info at
www.power-up.net
with the submission deadline set for May 1.
INTERNATIONAL MARKET:
mtvU has unveiled plans for the next phase of its
initiative, mtvU Sudan, which includes the launch of a nationwide
search for a college student to serve as a correspondent specifically
covering the events in Sudan. mtvU Sudan aims to inform and
mobilize college students nationwide to help stop the ongoing
humanitarian crisis in the Darfur region of Sudan. In conjunction
with the UN, the student correspondent along with the mtvU production
team will travel to the region and file reports on mtvU set to air

After debuting its Crime & Investigation Network in Australia
in January, A&E Television Networks is bringing the new cable
channel to the US with a open preview on April 2. American Justice,
Investigative Reports, Cold Case Files, Family Forensic and The First 48
are some of the crime shows set to air on Crime & Investigation

platform (Telstra/News Corporation).
