LATAM MARKET:
FremantleMedia has filed a lawsuit against
Peru's Panamericana Television, S.A. for copyright
infringement of American Idol. According to FremantleMedia, the
broadcaster used the America Idol format to develop and air its
Superstar television show. FremantleMedia is asking the
Peruvian court to reaffirming its copyrights on the format and to deter
Panamericana from bringing in the Spanish-language talent show into the
US.
AFRICAN AMERICAN MARKET:
A new analysis from Scarborough Research
places urban radio audiences as high spenders in such categories
as automotive, sports clothing, wine and wireless. The research
company defines Urban Radio Listeners as adult consumers interested in
Contemporary, Inspirational, Gospel, Rhythmic Contemporary Hit Radio,
Urban AC, Urban Contemporary and/or Urban Oldies formats with a high
African-American concentration in this particular audience. Here
are some of the findings:
Urban audiences are 52% more likely than the average US adult to plan
on purchasing a luxury automobile within the next year.
This demographic spends $500+ annually on sports apparel and
constitutes 35% of all consumers.
They are 43% more likely than the national average to pay $20+ on a
bottle of wine.
Urban listeners' monthly wireless phone bill tend to be 10% more than
the national average with $64 and $58 respectively.
Demographic information shows Urban Radio Listeners are twice as
likely to be between 18-24 years old and single. They are four
times more likely to be African American. The urban listeners
reported 42% with an annual household income of $50,000+.
African American television homes in the US represent 13,170,000
households. Here are the rankings for the week of January 31 -

ASIAN MARKET:
NBC Universal and Broadmedia Studios
Corporation (a SOFTBANK Broadmedia subsidiary) inked an exclusive,
multi-year distribution deal for free and basic subscription cable TV
rights in Japan to an array of Universal's feature movies and TV
titles. The deal covers first-run and library features and TV
movies and series. Movies such as The Scorpion King, Red Dragon, 2 Fast 2
Furious, The Bourne Identity, Bridget Jones's Diary, Liar, Liar,
Kindergarten Cop, Twins and Casino are included with television titles
such as Miami Vice, Airwolf, Columbo and Law & Order.
GAY/LESBIAN:
here! Films picked up the US rights to the
Shooting Gallery-produced movie Julie Johnson.
The drama, starring Lili Taylor, Courtney Love, Mischa Barton, Noah
Emmerich and Spalding Gray, centers on the tale of a housewife and her
best friend. Julie Johnson first debuted at the 2001 Sundance Film
Festival and is set to air on here! in June. here! Films purchased
the rights from Cinemavault Releasing which is handling international
sales of the Shooting Gallery library after the company went bankrupt in
2001. Bob Gosse wrote the script with Wendy Hammond in addition to
directing.
Showtime is joining up with the Human Rights Campaign (HRC)
for the second year in a national outreach initiative with 33
screenings across the US of the 2nd season of Showtime's The L
Word. The show's sophomore season is set to debut on February
20 at 10 pm. In addition, Showtime and HRC are promoting The L Word
House Parties on the season premiere night. More information at

INTERNATIONAL MARKET:
Kate Peyton, a BBC producer for Africa, died
yesterday following surgery complications after being shot in the
back in Mogadishu, Somali by a militiaman. Kate and BBC
reporter Peter Greste had just arrived there to produce a series of
reports. Peter was unharmed. BBC Director of News, Helen Boaden, said
"Kate was one of our most experienced and respected foreign affairs
producers who had worked all over Africa and all over the world. She will
be greatly missed, both professionally and personally." Somali
President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed issued a statement that her murder was
"extremely shocking and extremely tragic. It is a cowardly act
and if the message was to scare the new Somali institutions or the
international community, definitely the killers made a very significant
mistake."
Nokia named Interpublic Group of Cos. as its agency of
record for its pan-European advertising account estimated at
$250-300 million. Lowe, Draft Worldwide, R/GA and Jack Morton are
the four Interpublic agencies currently named to take care of the
advertising, direct marketing, events, trade marketing and music
sponsorship for the company's new handsets (advanced music, video,
telephone and e-mail aspects). Interpublic won against the other
finalists which included Grey Global Group's Grey Worldwide, Omnicom
Group's DDB Worldwide (German), Havas' Euro RSCG (Chicago). The ad
account will be mainly geared towards nontraditional media to attract the
younger crowd.
OMNI.1 will air the global premiere of the 2-part documentary
Moshe Safdie: The Power of Architecture on February 12 and
February 24 at 9 pm. The Donald Winkler-directed and narrated
English-language program was exec produced by Incendo Media and produced
by ZONE3. The doc chronicles the life of the Israeli Canadian
architect with footage from the US, Canada and Israel.

Univision Communications Inc. has upped Ray
Rodriguez to President and COO. All of Univision's
businesses will report to Ray. His previous position was Univision
Network President, Galavision and TeleFutura President. He first
began with Univision in 1990. Ray will continue to report to A.
Jerrold Perenchio, Univision's Chairman and CEO.
