Good morning! It's
Monday, February
14
, 2005, and this is your first early morning
Multi-Cultural
briefing.
HISPANIC MARKET:
A new order from Televisa talent GM
Alejandro Benitez has forbidden any of the Mexican broadcaster's
contracted talent from working with Univision (Televisa has a 10.9%
stake in Univision), according to a report in Variety. A
reason was not specified in the memo released on the same day as Ray
Rodriguez's promotion to Univision Communications' president and COO
position. This particular order may reek havoc with Univision's
lineup (especially with the upcoming Premios lo nuestro de la musica on
February 24) as Televisa supplies the US network with many of its
telenovelas. Rumors point toward upset leaders in Televisa and
Venevision (together with Televisa own a 25% share) over Ray Rodriguez's
promotion. His new position has been open for the past 5 years but
will now put Ray in the succession line to replace Univision chairman/CEO
A. Jerrold Perenchio when he decides to retire.
Telemundo and Verizon Wireless are collaborating to enable
participation for both of the companies' customers in Telemundo's
Nuevas Voces de America (New Voice of America). The new
performance reality series began this past weekend and will continue to
air for the next 15 weeks. Through text messaging, viewers can
watch the Sunday 8 pm show and vote for their favorite contestant.
In addition, certain contestants will have the chance to air their show
experiences through the Verizon Wireless' "Call Home Minutes"
program segment.

AFRICAN AMERICAN
MARKET:
January's figures showed a lesser ad
revenues decrease for black magazines than the Publishers
Information Bureau's (PIB) measured 202 magazines as a group.
Compared to the total magazine average revenue decrease of 40% from
December 2004 to January 2005, African American magazines Black
Enterprise, Ebony, Essence, Jet and Vibe experienced a 35%
decrease. Compared to last year's figures for the same timeframe,
the five black publications saw a 22.5% growth in ad revenues compared to
9.7% for all PIB mags. Vibe fared the best with a 76% increase over
its 2004 numbers. Vibe had a decrease of 39% between December and
January followed by Black Enterprise with 37%, Essence with 35%, Ebony
with 26% and Jet with 22%.
MIDDLE EAST MARKET:
One of Iran's largest film productions was
spearheaded by Islamic documentary maker NaderTalebzadeh
as a counter to Mel Gibson's The Passion of Christ. The
Messiah (Good Tidings of the Savior in Farsi) is a 2+-hour feature
film as well as a television series to air after the film's
release. Filmed for Iranian TV, the TV series will consist of
twenty 45-minute episodes centering on the tale of Jesus' birth and
teachings with the Koran as its main source. The Messiah differs
from the biblical story as the night of the Last Supper arrives.
The movie does depict Jesus as he is seen in Western traditions with
light skin and hair despite criticism that he should look more Middle
Eastern. Nader Talebzadeh studied cinema at New York's Columbia
University in the 1970s.
INTERNATIONAL MARKET:
Jaguar Cars (Ford Motor Company) has narrowed
down its agency search for its estimated $150 million global creative
and marketing services account to several firms. Euro RSCG
(Havas), JWT and Berlin Cameron/Red Cell (WPP),
Kirschenbaum, Bond and Partners (partially MDC Partners),
Leagas Delaney and M&C Saatchi. Young &
Rubicam (WPP Group) did not make it to this latest round. The
agency search is being handled by London's Agency Assessments
International and New York's Roth Associates.
The Brits are coming ... again. The UK's sitcom According to
Bex is the newest scripted format to make its way to the States from
BBC1. The Fred Barron-written and produced show will
be adapted for a US pilot ordered up by CBS from Barron's Rude
Boy Productions and Touchstone TV. The new US show,
Everything I Know About Men, will center around the same theme as
its UK counterpart with a secretary dealing with the life of
"almosts" (nearly in a good job, a good relationship, etc.) as
the main character.
The Scott Rudin, Trey Parker and Matt Stone-produced Team America:
World Police is raising a few eyebrows with the North Korean
embassy in the Czech Republic. The emissary asked the
Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs to pull the puppet show from theaters
due to the movie's portrayal of Kim Jong-il. The ministry office's
spokesman Vit Kolar replied that it was no longer the office
responsibility to ban movies and that “since totalitarian rule ended in
1989, the state has kept its nose out of movie theaters.” Answer to Yesterday's Trivia
