LATAM MARKET:

BBC World will no longer be offered on Venezuela's cable platform SuperCable.  BBC has pulled the international news service from its offerings due to a commercial dispute between the two corporations. BBC World's director of sales and distribution, Jeff Hazell, stated that "we have done everything possible but we regret that we can no longer distribute BBC World via SuperCable while this dispute continues.  We would be happy to continue our relationship with the company if we can resolve our differences. Until then, however, we cannot make BBC World programming available to SuperCable."  The channel is still being offered in Venezuela on DIRECTV and NetUno.

AFRICAN AMERICAN MARKET:

American Legacy will celebrate its 10 year birthday with its spring issue.  In addition, the African-American history and culture magazine will be involved with several events including a traveling US exhibition entitled “Celebrating Black America Tour”.  The 5-month tour will begin at New York's Forbes Galleries from March 3 through April 16 and continue through 25 cities.  American Legacy's annual Living History Awards will also be held at a formal gala in September.

The 33-year old Black Beat Magazine is redesigning itself with the new look premiering in the June issue.  The urban teen/college-age-oriented monthly magazine will be more oriented towards a sophisticated tech look with additional news, trends, fashion and more for the “urbanista”.  The mag's upcoming issues will include a special April Prom issue and a May Summer Music Preview issue.   Black Beat is distributed in the US by Time Warner Retail Sales & Marketing and internationally by Kable News Company.

ASIAN/INDIAN MARKET:

Intermedia and Kadakowa USA are collaborating a new project to produce and finance an English-language version of the Japanese horror movie One Missed Call.  The movie focuses on a college student who decides to not answer a call and, upon checking the voicemail message, finds that it is a recording three days hence of her voice as she is being murdered.  Intermedia's Motion Picture Group president, Scott Kroopf, will produce the English-language remake with Kadakowa's Lauren C. Weissman, Jennie Lew Tugend and Kadakowa Films president Shinya Egawa.  Intermedia's side will be headed up by Devon Schiff, Lindsey Dold and Alison Haskovec.  Kadakowa Pictures USA is the LA-based division of Kadakowa Shoten Publishing.  Side note…The sequel, One Missed Call II, just premiered 2 weeks ago and has already brought in $6 million.

ImaginAsian TV's first original comedy series Uncle Morty's Dub Shack will debut on February 25 at 11pm.  The night show follows the lives of four  struggling rappers as they take a job with their uncle providing English-language voiceovers for lesser-known Asian movies.  Other original programming includes The Lounge, Movies for the ImaginAsian and Asian Reel.  Hosted by Ryan Lee and Emily C. Chang, The Lounge explores the top Asian dramas.  Movies for the ImaginAsian is hosted by Pooja Kumar and Jackson Loo with the show centering on primetime Asian movies.  The original program Asian Reel broadcasts documentaries with Robert Chu as its host.

GAY/LESBIAN MARKET:

PBS President and CEO Pat Mitchell will step down when her contract ends in June 2006.  The announcement follows on the heels of controversy over the airing of a cartoon program on PBS that featured a real lesbian couple.  In addition to being under attack for using public money (receives money from Congress, individual, local station, state governments and foundation contributions) for the Postcards From Buster episode that did not agree with what Congress wanted for public programming, the network president is also encountering fundraising challenges.  In the Sugartime episode, the main character Buster travels to Vermont to learn about farming and maple sugar and meets a lesbian couple in his wanderings.  Although the episode was not distributed to PBS' 349 television stations, the producer behind Sugartime, Boston's WGBH-TV, is making the episode available to other stations.

INTERNATIONAL MARKET:

Germany and New Zealand's governments have inked a co-production deal at the hands of their Foreign Minister and Prime Minister respectively to provide financial support for productions or partnerships taking place in both countries. As part of the new agreements guidelines, a production qualifies if one partner holds between 20-80% of the project's financing.   A political and film representative commission will also be set to supervise the new agreement's implementation and use.

The independent distribution company Vitagraph and Landmark Theater Corp. have jointly picked up the North American rights to the Spanish comedy Crimen ferpecto (Ferpect Crime) from Spain's Sogepaq.  The Alex de la Iglesia movie is produced by his company, Panico Films, Sogecable's Sogecine and Italy's Planet Pictures.  As part of the rights deal, the comedy will be released in at least 10 cities.  Guillermo Toledo and Monica Cervera star in the movie respectively as a morally corrupt department store salesman who gets his just deserts when his stout sales assistant tricks him into marrying her.  Crimen ferpecto has already grossed $5.6 million in Spain

Etc., ALL MARKETS:

TV One named Karen Wishart as SVP/General Counsel. She replaces John W. Jones, who returned to Radio One as General Counsel.  Karen was previously with Scripps Networks as VP of Business Affairs.

The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences named Eva Obadia as Marketing Manager.  She will be responsible for marketing, PR and sponsor relations. Eva was previously PR/marketing manager for TV Matters. She will report to exec director Camille Bidermann-Roizen.

Brandmovers, Inc. upped Hector Pagés to COO.  He will work to assimilate the company's interactive technology into its product portfolio.  Hector was previously Director of Client Services.
