Good morning! It's Friday, February 18, 2005, and this is your first early morning Multi-Cultural briefing.

HISPANIC MARKET:

Countrywide Home Loans, Inc. has signed on as a sponsor for Telemundo's home makeover series Lo Dejo en Tus Manos (I'm Leaving It in Your Hands).  The show debuted last January and airs on Sundays at 11:20 am through March 25.  The sponsorship is part of the residential lenders campaign to draw Hispanics towards purchasing a home, and providing the loans to do that.  The company has already and will continue to reward several families with monetary prizes.  This fresh campaign is an offshoot of Countrywide's "Facilitando Suenos" TV and radio ad campaign (debuted in June 2004).

Unilever's Foods North America named Mosaica as its Hispanic agency of record.  The multicultural communications agency will oversee Hispanic strategic planning, ad creations, production and media planning for Unilever's foods brands (Hellmann's, Knorr, Ragu, Shedd's Spread Country Crock and more). Mosaica has had the Hellmann's and Shedd's Spread Country Crock accounts for the last 3 years.  Del Rivero-Messianu previously held the Knorr account and Mendoza Dillon handled Ragu.  The media planning responsibilities for the last two brands were formerly handled by Mindshare. Mindshare will continue to be responsible for the merged Hispanic Media Buying for Unilever in the US.

Nickelodeon is bringing its Dora the Explorer to a mall near you.  The exhibit "La Casa de Dora" will make a 10-city mall tour starting February 19-20 in Denver, February 26-27 in San Francisco, March 5-6 in LA, March 12-13 in Phoenix, March 19-20 in Houston, April 2-3 in Dallas, April 9-10 in New York City, April 16-17 in Albuquerque, April 23-24 in Miami and April 30-May 1 in Chicago.  Dora the Explorer is the #1 pre-school program among Hispanic kids.

Allianz Life Insurance Company of North America Allianz Life named WING Latino as its US Hispanic agency of record. The 2005 campaign will center on strengthening branding via business-to-business media outlets, bilingual materials, event marketing, educational seminars and PR.  The Hispanic advertising is part of a larger multicultural initiative on the part of Allianz to focus in on insurance agents in the African American, Asian American and Hispanic communities.

LATAM MARKET:

Twentieth Century Fox acquired the Spanish and Latin American theatrical and DVD/video rights to Alatriste (Captain Alatriste).  The movie centers on a Spanish mercenary involved in Spain's 16th-century imperial wars.  It is the most expensive Spanish-language movie ever produced in Spain with a $28 million price tag.  Universal Studios Networks Espana has also taken up a stake in the film which is co-produced by Estudios Picasso (Telecinco and Origen's co-production division).  Shooting is set to begin March 7 in Madrid, Cuenca and Andalusia.   Alatriste is written and directed by Agustin Diaz Yanes and stars Viggo Mortensen, Javier Camara, Elena Anaya, Unax Ugalde, Ariadna Gil, Antonio Resines and Blanca Portillo.

Brazil's TV Globo picked up the exclusive Oscar broadcast rights for the country.  Its rival network, SBT, has held the rights for the last 5 years.  TV Globo will air spots from the award ceremony's beginning but broadcast the final aspects of the show live.  The entire Oscar ceremony will be broadcast by Paybox TNT.

AFRICAN AMERICAN MARKET:

Wal-Mart Stores, E. Morris Communications (Wal-Mart's African American ad agency) and TV One are collaborating on a multi-platform joint venture with a new documentary in the works.  The Invisible Men of Honor: the Story of the Buffalo Soldiers tells the tale of post-Civil War all-black brigades who were deployed to guard frontier towns and railroads in the West.  In addition to its debut on February 17, The Invisible Men of Honor will air on February 20 at 6pm and February 27 at 1am as well as in May and November for Memorial Day and Veterans Day.  The documentary was ordered by Wal-Mart and E. Morris Communications with TV One taking on the role of exclusive TV partner. In addition to on-air trailers, the 3 companies will promote the new doc with network and local radio spots and newspaper coverage.  The Invisible Men of Honor" debuted at a Houston special screening on February 12 to honor those Buffalo Soldiers still alive today (Houston is home to the Buffalo Soldier Museum).

February 21-25 has been dubbed Take Back the Music Week by Essence magazine.  The publication is asking individuals to express their issues, favorite and not-so-favorite aspects of pop music by contacting (calls, letters, emails, etc.) them.  Specifically, Essence is asking for opinions regarding African American women's portrayal in music and in videos.  The week will culminate with a Town Hall Meeting co-hosted by the magazine and Spelman College on February 25 from 7-9 pm at the Atlanta college.  The meeting will center around "Where Are We Now? How Did We Get Here? Where Are We Going?" with Michael Lewellen (BET's VP/Corporate Communications), Bryan Leach (TVT Records' VP/Urban A&R), Kevin Powell (author/activist), MC Lyte (hip-hop artist/actress), Tarshia Stanley (Spelman professor of English) and Moya Bailey (Spelman student) on the panel. The discussion will be moderated by Michaela Angela Davis (Essence's executive fashion and beauty editor).  This particular week is part of Essence's one year study of the same title into how women are portrayed in pop music and music videos.

ASIAN/INDIAN MARKET:

Japan's NHK has picked up the broadcast rights to 2 documentaries from US-based APT Worldwide.  The 1-hour The Cure delves into the search for heart disease solutions and potential breakthroughs.  Thirst (1x60) focuses on the clash between international corporations and local communities over drinking water rights and ownership by focusing on the struggles in India, Bolivia and the US.

Casting has started for a new reality show entitled Taping of Quest China, Da Tiao Zhan (Big Challenge) from House Films.  The challenge-based series will pit teams from Australia, China, the UK and the US against each other as they endure physical and intellectual challenges in their travels through China.  The new show will be broadcast on the US' Asian Street on the International Channel in the spring.

Star Movies has renewed its live and exclusive broadcast rights to the Oscars with Buena Vista Intl. Television (Asia Pacific) for India and Taiwan for the next 5 years.   The broadcast will air on the network in Southeast Asia and the Middle East as well.

INTERNATIONAL MARKET:

The online black market for hit US shows' episodes is thriving according to new research data from web monitoring company Envisional.  Their figures show a 150% increase in pirated television shows over the past year.  Envisional found that 70% of the piracy occurred through the use of BitTorrent software.  The UK heads up the pirating list with a 20% share of the international TV piracy total amount followed by Australia and then the US according to silicom.com.  The top 10 (don't we love top ten lists!) pirated US television shows in rank order are….24, Stargate Atlantis, The Simpsons, Enterprise, Stargate SG-1, The O.C., Smallville, Desperate Housewives, Battlestar Galactica and Lost.

Buena Vista International Television (BVITV) has inked a multi-year deal with Italy's FASTWEB for close to 40 blockbuster titles and nearly 50 library films.  Walt Disney Pictures, Miramax Films and Touchstone Pictures movies are included in the distribution agreement that covers such films as Finding Neverland, Kill Bill: Vol. 2, King Arthur, National Treasure, Starsky & Hutch and The Ladykillers.

Friday Fun Fact:  The average person takes between 12 and 18 breathes a minute.  Go ahead, time yourself.  We'll wait.

Answer to Yesterday's Trivia Question:  Who has a Woodstock tattoo, you know, Woodstock - the little yellow bird from Charlie Brown?  ERIC on THAT 70'S SHOW.  Kudos to: Heather Limestahl-Fox 11/LA.

Today's Trivia Question -  a Movie Trivia Question:  This film when released in China was under the title 007 Averted the Spy Plot.  What is the original US title for this James Bond film?   (click here with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone with your answer.  Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you've been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can't be mentioned again that calendar week.)
