AFRICAN AMERICAN
MARKET:
Charges have finally been made for the 1987
murder of San Diego-based Voice & Viewpoint publisher William
Thompson. Already incarcerated in California for a burglary
conviction for life, Stanley Clayton was charged with the help of
recently matched DNA from blood from the murder scene.
William Thompson's newspaper served the San Diego African-American
community.
A new association of African-American ad agencies has been
launched. The Association of Black-Owned Advertising Agencies,
Inc. (ABAA) currently consists of 10 founding agencies with Eugene
Morris (chairman/CEO of E. Morris Communications, Inc.) serving as
the interim chairman. According to Morris, “The formation of
the ABAA was long overdue. For more than 40 years, the
African-American market has been the number one ethnic market in America.
With the growing importance of these consumers, we need to find ways to
collectively use our expertise and address critical issues facing both
the market and our agencies.” The founders are Anderson
Communications, E. Morris Communications, Equals Three Communications,
Fuse Advertising, Lattimer Moffitt Communications, Matlock Advertising
& Public Relations, Muse Communications, Prime Access, R.J. Dale
Advertising & Public Relations and SWG&M Advertising.
ASIAN/INDIAN MARKET:
Television Korea 24 (tvK24) and Comcast
have affiliated themselves for use of the American Korean-language
channels tvK1 and tvK2 according to International
Channel Networks (ICN). In addition to being invested in tvK24,
ICN distributes the network's channels to North American cabsat
corporations through its language channels packages. tvK1 will
debut in the LA area on Comcast in March as a general entertainment
channel including news, dramas and variety shows. tvK2 will pursue
the young viewers with music videos, entertainment news and programming
and gaming shows. In addition to being invested in tvK24, ICN
distributes the network's channels to North American cabsat corporations
through its language channels packages and co-markets with the
Korean-American channels with tvK24.
GAY/LESBIAN MARKET:
Now I have heard it all! Apparently
Shrek 2 is the newest film to be seen as sending off “subtle
s#xual messages” according to the US-based Traditional Values
Coalition. The fundamentalist organization believes the animated
film exhibits cross-dressing and transgender themes. The
evil bartender (played by Larry King by the way) has been dubbed a
male-to-female transgender in transition who is in for Prince
Charming. Pinocchio gets in trouble with his nose and provides an
escape route for Shrek and Donkey but only after they get him to lie
about wearing women's undergarments. Who knows….Shark Tale may be
next with its dolphin-dressing, vegetarian shark.
INTERNATIONAL MARKET:
Strix (Modern Times Group) has signed a
production agreement for Talpa Media's Survivor as well as
several additional formats spanning over the next 3 years. Strix
will coproduce the Survivor format entitled Expedition Robinson in
Holland with the new Dutch television channel TVNL (owned by De
Mol).

Answer to Yesterday's Trivia
Question:The Electronicam was a
technological device invented in the mid 1950's that virtually changed
the way television shows were filmed, thereby outpacing the previously
industry standard of the kinescope. What did the Electronicam do?
IT IS THE PROCESS OF SHOOTING A TELEVISION SHOW BOTH LIVE AND ON FILM
AT THE SAME TIME, AND MAKING IT AVAILABLE ON MONITORS FOR PEOPLE OTHER
THAN JUST CAMERA OPERATORS TO SEE AS IT HAPPENS. Kudos to just
one - Dick Cox/DCA Television-Stratford.
