Telemundo's newest lineup with include three
original telenovelas this spring. Fremantle's first
foray will be its Latin American division's La ley del silencio
(Law of Silence) telenovela. Set and produced in Dallas, the
new HD series is based on a true story about the confession and story a
priest hears about a man wrongfully jailed for murder from the one who
committed the crime. The 20th-century-based series Los
plateados (Silverados) is a save-the-day storyline (Robin Hood-ish)
starring Mexico's Mauricio Islas and produced by Argos
Comunicacion. The third telenovela, Frijol (working title),
is a family series about a young boy and his devotion/love for his single
mother as she falls in love. Buenos Aires-headquartered Promofilms
is behind the production of Frijol.

awards will distinguish the achievements of African Americans in
the all parts of the feature movie industry. Jeff Friday (Film Life
and American Black Film Festival' founder/CEO) will exec produce with
Suzanne de Passe (de Passe Entertainment). The Film Life Movie

Supporting Role - Female and Best Screenplay and honorary awards such as
the Distinguished Career Achievement Award and a Rising Star Award.
Nominations will be recognized in April. HBO Short Film Award will
also be part of the event as a special presentation. In addition,
new Classic Cinema Hall of Fame inductees will be announced. The FLMA is
part of New York-based Film Life, Inc..
In a follow up to Friday's story in Cynopsis MCE on
Suede magazine's temporary discontinuation, Essence
Communications Partners' president, Michelle Ebanks, reported that
the decision was a financial one unconnected to Time Inc.'s recent
acquisition of ECP. "We've been evaluating the business from
pre-launch but we're getting more consumer research and results in now
and we're seeing how difficult it is to reach this multicultural
audience. It's not something that's ever really been done
successfully…the product was more expensive than we thought [it would be]
as well."
ASIAN/INDIAN MARKET:
Hong Kong and Thailand will be the newest
recipients of E! Networks' E! International Network.
The round-the-clock English-language entertainment news channel will

through the eyes of art, music and s#xuality when it soon heads into its
production phase. Shortbus is expected to debut in 2006.
Fortissimo will be in charge of foreign sales as well. The new
movie will be exec produced by Q's Frank Olsen (president/CEO) and Alexis
Fish (SEVP) and Fortissimo's Wouter Barendrecht and Michael J. Werner.
Process' Howard Gertler and Tim Perell have signed on as producers.
In addition to its investment in the production, Q Television will act as
the promotional liaison for the private investor film group financing the
Shortbus. The North American rights are open except for Q's reservation
of the movie's basic cable rights.
