Good morning! It's
Tuesday, March 1, 2005,
and this is your first early morning
Multi-Cultural
briefing.
HISPANIC MARKET:
The new Beisbol MundialSpanish-language sports magazine will distribute its premiere
issue in April to 1+ million readers. Initially beginning as a
quarterly, the 24-28 page publication will focus on international aspects
of baseball including Latin America, Japan and the World Cup.
Futbol Mundial's publisher, Felix Sencion, is behind the mag's
publishing with Jorge Ignacio Dominguez as editor. Beisbol
Mundial will be a free insert in 13 major Hispanic newspapers such as Al
Dia, El Diario la Prensa, El Nuevo Herald and La Raza.
Target's first original Spanish-language ad campaign rolled
out this week with 3 television ads. New York-based indie
Ole was in charge of the ads' creation which centers on
introducing Hispanic consumers to Target and its products (rather than
English-language ads which now simply include the company's logo rather
than its name). In addition, Target relaunched its
www.target.com/espanol website with additional Spanish-language content and
links. Target's print advertising will follow shortly.
Radiovisa has teamed up with MRN Radio- The Voice of
NASCAR to keep Hispanic audiences abreast of 3 live races. The
Spanish-language radio network aired The Stater Bros. 300 on February 26,
Auto Club 500 on February 27 and will follow up with Nascar's first
Mexican race, The Mexico 200, on March 6.
Fox Sports en Espanol, Fox Sports Latin America and
Proteus formed a joint venture to debut their Fox Sports Copa
Movil product and service package bringing audiences updates on the
Copa Libertadores matches. The service will first launch in the US
and Brazil, followed soon after by Fox Sports viewers in Mexico and Latin
America. Score updates, ringtones, wallpapers, surveys and mobile
video services will be part of the offerings. Fox Sports en Espanol
and Fox Sports Latin America will air half-minute promos on their
networks about the new soccer service. Proteus is a mobile
entertainment content creator and publisher.

AFRICAN AMERICAN
MARKET:
The latest urban magazine to hit
newsstands is the women-oriented VibeVixen from Vibe's
publishers. The bi-annual publication is centering on young, trendy
urban women with music, culture, beauty and fashion with an initial rate
base of 425,000. The spring premiere issue included interviews with
Ashanti, Halle Berry, Jill Scott, Ciara and more.
The March 2 live finale episode of UPN's The Road to Stardom
with Missy Elliott will be hosted by TRL's VJ Vanessa Minnillo
from 9-10 pm. In addition to the obvious winner
announcement, the show will include a performance with all the eliminated
vocalists and individual last routines by the 3 finalists. The
ultimate winner will receive a record contract, a released single and
$100,000.
MIDDLE EAST MARKET:
The Middle Eastern network Alhurra TV will
soon expand its offerings to several European countries
with significant Muslim populations. France and Germany will most
likely be the first launches planned for the US-government backed news
network. The expansions financial budget for $3.5 million of
start-up funding will be pulled from President Bush's $81 billion
supplemental budget application for Iraqi military operations. Pending
Congress' sign of approval, the European broadcasting expansion may start
by fall 2005.
INTERNATIONAL MARKET:
China, India, Jamaica, Morocco and South Africa
will be the next in line to negotiate movie co-production
agreements with the UK. Britain currently has treaties
with Australia, Canada, New Zealand, France, Germany, Italy and Norway
but may not continue with the last 3 countries. According to the UK
government, Norway's treaty had simply not been taken advantage of while
the European Convention on Co-production would better serve the German
and Italian co-productions. The treaties enable filmmakers to use
subsidies and tax breaks from the other country.
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is set to air in Germany, Russia
and Central Europe in a deal set up by 4Kids Entertainment.
Seasons 1-2 (52 episodes) of the current updated version of the animated
series were recently acquired by RTL2 and Jetix in
Germany. RTL2 will begin airing the series in
September. In Russia, TV3 purchased seasons 1 and 2, while
Hungary's RTL Klub and Minimax (Hungary, Czech Republic,
Slovakia, Romania) picked up seasons 1 through 4 (total of 104
episodes). Bulgaria's Nova TV also acquired the Teenage
Mutant Ninja Turtles.
