HISPANIC MARKET:
MTV Puerto Rico's programming hours will increase
from 12 to 20 hours as the channel takes on new video jockeys and a San
Patricio Plaza studio this month. The 6 pm to 2 pm lineup
will include such MTV staples as MTV Puerto Rico Unplugged, Room Raiders,
Pimp My Ride, The Osbournes, Punk'd and The Newlyweds. The

AFRICAN AMERICAN
MARKET:
Gospel Music Channel and Knology Inc. have
inked a corporate carriage deal to give access to the company's
Knoxville, TN and Valley, AL area subscribers. GMC will be part of
Knology's expanded basic analog channel lineup as of March 7.
African American television homes in the US represent 13,170,000
households. Here are the rankings for the week of February 21-27, 2005

ASIAN/INDIAN MARKET:
With less than 100 theaters in all of
Vietnam, the country is the first target of the newly formed joint
venture between J. Edward Shugrue (ex-president of Loews Cineplex Intl.
and Columbia TriStar Film Distributors Intl.), Donald L. DeVivo (Mekong
Leisure) and Richard A. Rosenfield (Asian Capital Partners). Envoy
Media Partners received investment and operating license approval
from the Vietnamese government which will enable the venture to team up
with Phoung Nam Corporation to create the Megastar Cineplex. Envoy
is looking to create movie complexes as well as distribute films in
Vietnam. Phoung Nam is a publication retail operator and publisher. The
two companies will look to import movies that will pass censorship from
the US, China, Hong Kong, Korea and Europe
GAY/LESBIAN MARKET:
here! Films has picked up the worldwide
distribution rights to April's Shower for an anticipated May
debut. The feature comedy movie is about two friends who, at one
point in their friendship, were lovers. Written, directed and
produced by Trish Doolan, the film delves into issues of love, lesbian
relationships and heteros#xual unions. Trish also stars as one of
the two friends, Alex, with other actors such as Honey Labrador (Queer
Eye for The Straight Girl), Maria Cina, Frank Grillo and Randall
Batinkoff. April's Shower's producers are Trish, Christopher
Racster, Honey Labrador and Bill Shaffer with +Entertainment representing
the sale.
A new print and outdoor advertising campaign by PlanetOut
and Gay.com is centering on the US as a divided country around
different ideals. The ads are rolling out in with a series of
images connecting gays and the American flag. Atlanta, Boston,
Dallas, Houston, LA, Miami, New York, Portland, San Diego, San Francisco,
Seattle and Washington, DC will be the campaign's target
markets.
INTERNATIONAL MARKET:
The international rights to The
Hollywood Beat have been acquired by New Mexico's Zia Film
Distribution. In addition to celebrity interviews and updates,
the Andy Culpepper and Alesia Standford-hosted weekly series will
highlight new movie releases.
The UK-based indie Scream Films has been sold to Fox Television
Studios. As part of the acquisition agreement, the 4-year old
production company, headed by its creative director Southan Morris, will
work with Fox TV Studios creative team to collaborate on new ideas and
formats eventually destined for 20th Century Fox Television
Distribution.
Showtime has sold several comedies and dramas to Fox
International Channels UK. All rights for Fat Actress have
been acquired by the UK network along with 2 unnamed dramas set to air in
the fall. The new series will also air exclusively on Fox channels
in Italy, Japan, and Latin America.
UK-based factual production company, Tigress Productions, has
received orders from BBC's Natural World and Animal Planet
channel for two fresh programs with Jeremy Bradshaw as exec producer
for both shows. The 1-hour Old Dogs New Tricks will follow
three canines from animal shelters who are retrained in order to find
homes. Karen Walsh is directing the show. WNET New York and
BBC2's Natural World will air the special upon completion. Set to
air on Animal Planet, RSPCA Inspectors Have You Got What it
Takes? (13x30) chronicles a group of aspiring dog trainers over 6
months as they find out whether the job is right for them.
Australia is on the prowl for 2 international ad agencies
to take on the creative, media planning and buying aspects of its
worldwide tourism advertising campaign. The two accounts will
center on Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Korea, LA,
London, New Zealand, Singapore and Tokyo. The bidding has already
started for the accounts worth nearly $47 million total. Omnicom
Group's Whybin Lawrence TBWA, Sydney, is handling the May 2004 campaign
(“Australia. A different light") which began in Singapore, the UK
and other countries. The Asia media buying account is under
Omnicom's OMD supervision. “Tourism Australia” also utilizes
Interpublic Group of Cos.' Dailey & Associates (LA), Delaney Lund
Know Warren (creative) and BJK&E for (European media buying) and
Navigator (New Zealand).
etc., ALL MARKETS:
Si TV's first year anniversary also heralds the
addition of seven newly named personnel.
Dotty Ewing was named as SVP/Marketing. She will
oversee the development and implementation of Si TV's nationwide
marketing campaign. Dotty was previously SVP of marketing and
on-air promotions for Playboy Entertainment Group.
Mark Zelenz was picked as Executive Director/Affiliate
Sales and Marketing for the Eastern Region. In addition to his
responsibilities for local Eastern region marketing and distribution
initiatives, he will manage the New York-centered sales team. Mark
was recently with Bloomberg Television Television Cable and Satellite
Sales.
Oscar Ordaz was named as Director/Affiliate Sales and
Marketing, Eastern Region. He will oversee the network's large
system and regional MSO distribution and marketing. Oscar was
previously Director of Affiliate Marketing at NBC Universal Cable
centering on the network's Hispanic networks.
Lillian Casares was appointed Director/Affiliate Sales and
Marketing, Western Region. She will be in charge of
distribution and marketing for her territory. Lillian was recently
Director of Affiliate Sales and National Accounts for HSN.
Brenda Lacy-Davis was named as Executive Director/Affiliate
Business Affairs. She will oversee Si TV's negotiations for
cable and satellite distribution deals and work with the network's
national sales team. Brenda was formerly VP of Business and Legal Affairs
for FoxFamily Channel.
Jennifer Long was named as Account Manager for the
Western Region. She was previously an LA-based account manager
with MTV Networks.
Karen Alcoba was appointed Account Manager for the
network's Eastern Region. She was previously with Elsevier
leading sales training and strategies for the company's North and South
American units.
Radio One, Inc. upped Deborah A. Cowan to
SVP/Finance. In her new position, she will oversee the
company's finance and accounting units' daily operations. Deborah
was previously VP of Finance. She will continue to report to Scott R.
Royster, EVP/CFO.
Gospel Music Channel named Barbara Bekkedahl as
Director/National Advertising Sales. She was previously with The
Family Channel/Fox Family/ABC Family Worldwide as EVP of advertising
sales and SVP of sales for Channel One. Barbara will be based in New
Jersey and report to David G. Baker, Gospel Music Channel's VP of
national advertising sales.
MTV Networks Music Group (MTV and VH1) named Lucia
Ballas-Traynor to the newly created position of General
Manager of its Hispanic services, MTV Espanol and VHUno.
She will be responsible for developing enhanced programming, marketing,
growth strategies, future distribution, ad sales and business
operations. Lucia was previously SVP of Hispanic marketing at IDT
Corporation. She will be based in New York and report to Christina
Norman, VH1's President and Rich Eigendorff, MTVN Music Group's
EVP/COO.
HombreTV has named Gabriel Carmona as
Director/Programming. In addition to his previous positions
at Univision Television Group and KMEX-TV, Gabriel founded Carmona
Productions.
