Good morning! It's
Friday, March 4, 2005,
and this is your first early morning
Multi-Cultural
briefing.
HISPANIC MARKET:
Bob Vila is collaborating with Catalina
Magazinefor a new regular column titled"Home
Life." His website,
www.BobVila.com,
will begin contributing the column in the Hispanic women-oriented
magazine's March/April 2005 issue. “Home Life” will center on home
improvement advice. (Did you know that over half of
www.bobvila.com's 2.5 million monthly viewers are women?)
Catalina has also incorporated three additional regular columns
into its pages: Cristina Perez's “Family Matters,” Tasha Noriega's
“Beauty Tips” and Christopher Gonzales' “On Entrepreneurship.”
Hispanic advertising saw a double jump in spending figures from
corporations in a span of 5 years between 1998 and 2003. By the
latter year, expenditures had reached $2.7 billion. In a new
report, Arbitron Power of Hispanic Consumers Study 2004-2005 stated that
Hispanic customers were more likely to listen to radio than read
newspapers or watch TV with 22 hours weekly spent on radio and close to
11 of those with Spanish-language formats. In addition, the report
showed that 19% of its Hispanic respondents were more than likely to pay
$500+ on their children's clothes annually and twice as likely to spend
the same amounts on athletic shoes for the same time period.
Arbitron's respondents were over 80% more likely to buy tickets to a
movie during its opening week than the general population.
LATIN AMERICAN MARKET:
Montreal's IMAVISION Distribution has
inked a DVD acquisition deal with TV Azteca for four of its
telenovelas destined for the North American market. As part
of the deal the two companies will produce tailored box sets with edited
telenovela episodes from La Hija del Jardinero, Mirada de
Mujer, Catalina & Sebastian and Cuando Seas
Mia. In addition to debuting the DVD sets in the third quarter
of 2005 on the home video and retail market, Imavision will promote DVDs
in TV ads and direct print marketing.
AFRICAN AMERICAN MARKET:
Armstrong Williams has been picked up by New
York's WWRL-AM (Access.1 Communications) as a "Drive Time
Dialogue" co-host. The African American-focused 3-hour
a.m. talk program has had the conservative commentator on-air several
times beforehand as an opposing view to its liberal commentator, Sam
Greenfield. Armstrong will join the show as of March 14.
In an episode that drew in a 2.0/6 rating among A18-34, UPN's
The Road to Stardom with Missy Elliot finale on March 2 crowned
Jessica Betts as the reality/drama series' winning finalist. The
Wednesday show brought in a series highest total with 4.3 million
viewers, a 2.8/7 rating for W18-34, 3.2/9 for teens, 1.7/4 for A18-49 and
2.4/5 for women 18-49. In addition to Jessica's winning, Missy
Elliott named Daniel Woodard and Sherron E. Johnson as the “Break the
Cycle Challenge” anti-domestic violence PSA junior-high school contest
for their 15-second spot, "Reflections," on the March 2
show.
In a recent Universum Communications poll, the African Americans
surveyed named Black MBA Magazine as one of the top three
magazines of their choice. The National Black MBA Association
(NBMBAA) publication focuses on trade news and issues relevant to
African-American MBAs and students.
ASIAN/INDIAN MARKET:
Correction: Yesterday's story on Envoy Media
Partners and its movie complex foray into Vietnam incorrectly spelled the
name of EMP's partner in the country. Phoung Nam Corporation is the
Vietnamese corporation (not Phoung Nam).
INTERNATIONAL MARKET:
Mind Body & Kick Ass Moves (10x30) will be
making its way stateside (not backside) as a result of a new acquisition
deal between Zeal Television and Discovery Channel.
The BBC3 show, which delves into different martial arts genres in Asia,
will begin airing this spring in 100 Discovery Channel areas in Africa,
Europe and the Middle East. August Productions produced the
series which became BBC3's highest rated factual program.
Extreme Entertainment has sold its Off to War documentary
to History Channel UK for an April broadcast. The 90-minute
special centers on the American National Guard as its members are sent
off to serve in Iraq in the biggest deployment since the last World
War. Close to 60 Arkansas National Guard personnel are followed as
they begin to leave their workplaces and families to join the 39th
Brigade of the Arkansas National Guard. The Off to War special
merges 3 of the 10 episodes that Discovery Times has commissioned from
US-based DCTV.
Chorion plc and the UK Terrestrial network, Five, have
unveiled co-production plans for a new CGI animated series titled, Say
it with Noddy (100x2). The new program will introduce
preschoolers to different languages and cultures by featuring words and
phrases in languages that kids might be hearing in their day-to-day
lives. Say it with Noddy, which stars Chorion's popular character
Noddy (Make Way for Noddy), is slated to premiere in the US on PBS
stations this July, with plans to bow in the UK at the end of
2005/beginning 2006. In the UK, Say it with Noddy, will feature
five languages French, Spanish, Mandarin, Swahili and Urdu, though the
program is designed to allow different languages to be highlighted.
Chorion, which holds the rights to Noddy, suggests that episodes of Say
it with Noddy can air either as a standalone interstitial program or can
be serve as a companion piece to episodes of Make Way for Noddy.
etc., ALL MARKETS:
The Bravo Group has named Mark Sadowski as
CFO and Mercedes Colon as VP/Director of Human
Resources. Mark was previously with Bates North America as SVP and
Controller. Mercedes' responsibilities will cover managing the HR
team, office services and other aspects of human resources. She was
previously the Consultant and Owner of HR Business Solutions. Both
Mark and Mercedes will report directly to Gary Bassell, Chairman &
CEO.
Friday Fun Fact: Antlers
and horns are not the same. Horns grow throughout an animal's life and
are found on both the male and female of a species. Antlers, composed of
a different chemical substance, are shed every year.
