HISPANIC MARKET:
SmartVideo Technologies and OlympuSAT have
signed on a joint venture to convey Hispanic network programs to
cellphone and PDA subscribers. Twenty four channels including B
Mania TV, Cine Mexicano, Colours TV, Daystar Television, Latin TV and TBN
from OlympuSAT's Hispanic, Digital I and Faith & Families packages
will be offered to 50+ million mobile phone subscribers as of April
1.

AFRICAN AMERICAN
MARKET:
Media International Concepts, Inc., BEN Asset
Group and BEN's subsidiary Black Education Network inked a
development deal for two African American-focused pilot shows for two new
solution-oriented radio series. The first show will center on the
Congressional Black Caucus by focusing on national issues that affect and
concern the African American community in general. The other show
will look at prevalent health problems African Americans face across the
nation. More info at

The 1948-1950 civil rights radio drama "Destination
Freedom" was donated to The Museum of Broadcast
Communications (MBC) by the creator's wife, Clarice Durham. The
late Richard Durham first began airing the series on WMAQ Radio on June
27, 1948 with an initial sponsorship from Chicago Defender and then from
the Chicago Urban League. The 91 tapes will be
digitized in order to “create online lesson plans that will introduce
Durham to a wider audience and a new generation," according to MBC's
founder/president, Bruce DuMont.
ABC's Sunday night feature movie, Their Eyes Were Watching
God, brought in a high 8.7/21 A18-49 rating for its 9-11 pm portion
(the movie ended at 11:30 pm). The film attracted 25 million
viewers and helped give the network its biggest Sunday primetime audience
in 4 years (excluding the Academy Awards and Super Bowl of course) with
the additional good ratings for Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (7.2/17
for A18-49 and 17.8 million total viewers).
The Tavis Smiley Center for Professional Media Studies will be
able to extend additional financial support to minority journalism
students with the acceptance of a $100,000 grant from Wal-Mart
Stores, Inc.. The new center opened its doors only last month
at Texas Southern University to encourage the study of mass
communications and training within the minority student
community.
ASIAN MARKET:
Nicktoons and XilamAnimation are
teaming up to produce Shuriken School (26x30) for Nickelodeon's
digital channel. The France-based production company will create
the animated series (originally from Zinkia Entertainment) about a
Japanese boy in his first year at a Ninja school. Set to debut in
2006, Shuriken School is targeted for 6-11 year old kids with a
Japanese-European anime mix.
The US and global TV, merchandising and licensing right to Taiwan's
ThunderForce cartoon have been picked up by Broadway Video
Enterprises and GoodTimes Entertainment from Distant
Horizon. The martial arts series will debut this fall on the
Cartoon Network's toonami block with the new name of Wulin
Warriors: Legend of the Seven Stars. Animation Collective will
produce the US version with 13 half-hour episodes that include martial
arts, puppetry and animation.
GAY/LESBIAN MARKET:
In a follow-up joint collaboration, Showtime
Networks and Embrace Productions are partnering again to bring
the "Midori presents Queer As Folk - Ancient Babylon
Tour" to nightclubs nationwide following their 2003 and 2004
tour. At each stop this summer, the tour will recreate the Showtime
series' on-set club with ancient Babylon-inspired decorating and RKM
performances. In addition, the TV series' actors will make
appearances during the tour's duration.
