Good morning! It's
Friday, March 11, 2005,
and this is your first early morning
Multi-Cultural
briefing.
Reverend Al Sharpton'srecent complaints and proposals
regarding violence in music are being heeded in the media
industry. The Reverend has had preliminary discussions with three
radio station corporations, and he reportedly will follow up with
television networks, cable broadcasters, the FCC and large
advertisers. His proposal suggests a 90-day ban on broadcasting
artists that use violence in their music for financial gain. In
Sharpton's words, “The National Action Network has become extremely
concerned about the reoccurring violence in the music industry that is
being cynically used by some for record and CD sales at the expense of
romanticizing violence to young Americans. Though we clearly
support anyone's first amendment right to say and perform whatever they
want, there must be a standard of conduct in their actual actions that is
conducive to what is regarded as professional behavior in any
industry."
HISPANIC MARKET:
Sorpresa! has been added to 23 additional
markets in Cox Communications, Inc.'s network. Geared
towards Spanish-speaking kids/teens, the channel's expansion brings its
reach to 285+ systems across the US. The new areas receiving
Sorpresa! include California (Bakersfield, Eureka and Santa Barbara),
Arizona (Tucson, Berryville/Eureka Springs and Clarksville), North
Virginia, Texas (Plainview, Abilene/Sweetwater, Big Spring, Conroe,
Georgetown/Round Rock, Lubbock, Midland, San Angelo, Sulphur Springs
Huntsville and Gainesville), Connecticut (Manchester), Rhode Island (West
Warwick), Arkansas (Fort Smith) and Idaho (Sun Valley).
AFRICAN AMERICAN MARKET:
TV One's newest series, Divine
Restoration, will debut on the African American-oriented network on
March 27 at 8 pm. Each 30m episode will center on renovating a
church in a 2-day time period. Catherine Burdon and Jim Codrington
host the series, filmed both in the US and in Canada. Saturdays at
8 pm will be the regular time slot for all 26 eps of the VisionTV
International-produced Divine Restoration.
ASIAN/INDIAN MARKET:
National Geographic Channels International (NGCI)
and China International Television Corporation (CITVC) are working
on a joint venture with their new high definition documentary
Forbidden City. The 12-episode series about China's
imperialistic history will air in China, and a 2-hour edited version will
be produced for international networks through NGCI. Forbidden City
is being created to honor China's Palace Museum and its upcoming 80th
anniversary.
In a move that reflects Mandarin's increased popularity as one of the top
3 languages in Hong Kong, Disney Channel and Playhouse Disney
Channel will now be available in Mandarin and
Cantonese. Live-action Disney programs and "Wonderful World
of Disney" evening movies will include traditional Chinese subtitles
with the original English-language version while other shows will be
dubbed.
INTERNATIONAL MARKET:
FremantleMedia has picked up the global
distribution and licensing rights to Planet Cook from UK-based
Platinum Films, in addition to the international production rights
(excluding Germany and the UK). The children's cuisine show stars
Captain Cook on his fantasy island as he teaches healthy recipes to young
cooking cadets. Planet Cook has received production
orders from the BBC in the UK (104x20) and ZDF in Germany (26x20) as well
as Australia's ABC deal for 52 episodes of the British program.
It's official. BBC's first layoff round included over
1700 personnel with the final layoff total projected to be 5000
jobs. With this first move, BBC will save $639 million. The
network hopes to bank $250 million annually with the cuts by the
2007-2008 season in order to put the savings towards new
programming. Half of the 1700 jobs were in the professional
services unit.
The Australian joint venture between Warner Home Video and
Road-Show Entertainment will be dissolving although the two
companies will remain as co-owners of their theaters, US film productions
and Australia's OZ theme parks. Both will pursue their own sales
business as separate entities.
The UK's Channel 4 series Teachers is making its way
stateside with a new NBC pilot drama titled Fillmore High,
produced by Tiger Aspect. Matt Tarses is adapting the US version
from the UK drama. Jane Fallon (Teachers exec producer) and Andrew
Zein (Tiger Aspect CEO) will exec produce Fillmore High.
