Good morning! It's
Monday, March 14, 2005,
and this is your first early morning
Multi-Cultural
briefing.
HISPANIC MARKET:
Beech-Nut NutritionCorporation is
launching a new Hispanic ad campaign with the creativity of its ad
agency, LatinWorks Marketing. The baby food commercials will
debut this week with the first ad, titled “Grandmothers”, to be broadcast
on Univision, Telefutura and Telemundo. The campaign will include 3
spots ("Grandmothers", "Red Alert" and
"Story"), an original website and more under the tagline
"Beech-Nut, la comida perfecta para tu bebe" (Beech-Nut, the
perfect food for your baby).
Set to take place and air on April 7, Univision's "Selena
Vive!" (Selena Lives!) event has added several new performers to
its lineup. The roster now includes Pepe Aguilar, Pete Astudillo,
Banda el Recodo, Ana Barbara, Los Dinos, Gloria Estefan, Fey, Ana
Gabriel, Alejandra Guzman, India, A.B. Quintanilla & the Kumbia
Kings, Lucero, Pablo Montero, Montez de Durango, Jay Perez, Bobby Pulido,
Paulina Rubio, Mariana Seoane, Aleks Syntek, Olga Tanon, Thalia, and
Alicia Villareal. The show will air live on the network from 8-11
pm.
Azteca America opened the doors to its new non-profit foundation
to benefit the Hispanic community. In addition to the help
Fundacion Azteca America will give to Mexicans in the US regarding
nutrition, education and health, the organization will also start up a
educational media campaign titled "Vive sin Drogas".
LATIN AMERICAN MARKET:
HBO/MAX will be available this week to Brazilian
subscribers through pay TV NET Servicos. Included in the
deal are Cinemax, HBO, HBO Family, HBO Plus and Max Prime with several
packaged deals available.
Sony Pictures Television International (SPTI) signed an agreement
with Chile's Mega network for production of the original hospital
drama Urgencias (Emergency). In addition to this deal, SPTI
has signed with Argentina's Telefe for fresh Married ... with
Children and Who's the Boss? episodes as well as localized
versions of The Nanny for Ecuador's Ecuavisa and Mexico's
TVAzteca.
Globo TV International has picked up the global distribution
rights for Brazil's football (soccer) leagues. The new
agreement is set to begin in 2006.
The Top 10 Mexican Box Office Estimates for February 25
March 3, 2005 will appear in tomorrow's March 15 edition due to technical
difficulties.
AFRICAN AMERICAN MARKET:
A newly inked agreement between Tavis
Smiley and Public Radio International will enable The Tavis
Smiley Show to be distributed to the public radio corporation's 727
affiliate stations across the US as of April 29 for Friday night
broadcasts. The format of this weekly 2-hour show will resemble
that of his previous NPR show which includes the accompaniment of
commentators such as Cornel West, Connie Rice, J.C. Watts, and Michael
Eric Dyson.
ASIAN/INDIAN MARKET:
The first Indian Idol topped its American
original counterpart with a total audience of 48 million viewers
by the end of the competition. The final voting included 30+
million text messages. In comparison, American Idol has been
bringing in 26-27 million viewers in its fourth year on Fox.
GAY/LESBIAN MARKET:
A television movie titled Getting Unstuck
will focus on the life of lesbian talk show producer Conscious
(Merle Soden). The new collaborative project between
Showtime, Eve and Larry Kennar (Code Entertainment)
will star the rapper as the HIV-positive producer. The biopic will
center on her struggling with child molestation, HIV from another woman,
drugs and living on the streets to her triumphs as a producer (Queen
Latifah's talk show, Oxygen's She-Commerce and more). The script
adaptation was penned by Sylvain White with Ken Gamble's help.
Sylvain will also serve as the director with Eve and Troy Carter (Irving
Wonder Productions) and Larry Kennar (Code Entertainment) as exec
producers.
INTERNATIONAL MARKET:
Intel Corporation named several McCann
Worldgroup agencies to its international brand marketing
account. The $300 million account will be led by the New York-based
agencies and include interactive campaigns, commercials, media planning
and buying.
Finland will be the trial ground for a pilot program to
link television and mobile set to run through June 20. The
Digita, Elisa, MTV, Nelonen, Nokia,
Sonera and YLE joint venture will enable 500 Sonera and
Elisa mobile phone users in the pilot to watch real-time television
and listen to radio through Nokia's 7710 Smartphone with the addition
of a specific accessory. The programs included in the pilot are
Finland's MTV, YLE and Nelonen as well as CNN, BBC World, Euronews,
Eurosport, ViVa Plus and Fashion TV.
Just in case you missed them the first time around…The UK-based Sit-Up
TV will premiere its new Bad Movies channel on Sky's
platform. The channel will launch with the baddest of the bad
Hollywood films in the spring. Of course, the movies to air have
remained unnamed as of yet. And, as the new channel's founder,
Ashley Faull, stated “We've got a vision that there's a gap in the market
for us to grow ad-funded film channels that aren't trying to compete with
the mainstream. Without being too Gerald Ratner about it, we'll take
great pride in showing complete crap."
etc., ALL MARKETS:
AL DIA named Michael Vinales to head up
its new product unit CustomSolutions AL DIA. Before joining the
Northeastern Hispanic newspaper, Michael was a national sales manager at
La Opinion.
TORONTO 1 named Jim Nelles as VP/General
Manager. Jim was previously General Sales Manager.
