Good morning! It's
Wednesday, March 16, 2005,
and this is your first early morning
Multi-Cultural
briefing.
Nielsen Media Research announced yesterday at its opening day of
its day National Client Meeting in Miami that as of January
2006 it would begin including Time Shifted Viewingin their
national sample. Time Shifted Viewing takes into account homes
with digital video recorders. Additionally, Nielsen reported it was
looking into Extended Home viewing and whether it would be able to
include household members who live part of the year elsewhere (i.e.
college students, or people living part of the year in second homes) and
include that data into its National People Meter sample. A
feasibility study conducted by Nielsen found that this viewing could be
measured with no negative impact on the quality of Nielsen's
sample. Interestingly, results of its study indicate that college
students spend an average of 221 viewing minutes per day (52 minutes in
primetime) while away at school, and contribute 21% of all viewing from
the their home during the time they aren't living in the house.
They've also found that viewing patterns are considerably different at
the alternative location, perhaps because of fewer television sets and
different lifestyle schedules. Nielsen will release the cost and
timeframes necessary to include alternative location homes in its
syndication ratings reports.
CABLEready and NY producer City Lights Television to will
co-develop a new reality series called Spread (13 x :30), which
turns ordinary women into extraordinary cover models - sans
surgery. Each episode will feature a woman chosen to undergo a 48
hour transformation with professional hair, makeup and clothing stylists.
After a coached photo session, one photo will be chosen, touched up as
needed, and then revealed in a high traffic major city intersection
(think Times Square) on a billboard. CABLEready/City Lights will
introduce the format at MIPTV in France next month.
HISPANIC MARKET:
In its first ever Spanish-language TV ad
campaign, the National Association of Realtors Public Awareness
Campaign will begin airing this month and run through September on
Univision, Telemundo and Galavision. As part of NAR's general campaign
($25 million account), the Hispanic-oriented ads will center on the
importance of real estate agents involvement with the association.
Over 400 Spanish-language TV ads will run during the campaign's
timeframe.
Telemundo's El Poder de Saber (The More You Know) campaign
will kick into gear for its second annual run on March 16 at 5 pm during
the network's Al Rojo Vivo con Maria Celeste. Numerous Telemundo
stars have signed up for the family-oriented initiative such as Humberto
Zurita, Mario Cimarro, Rodrigo de la Rosa, Jessi Losada, Candela Ferro,
Ivonne Montero, Natalia Streignard and Rocio Sanchez-Azuara. More
info at
www.elpoderdesaber.com.
LATIN AMERICAN MARKET:
Claudio Nozzi, a former Fox Sports and HBO Latin
America executive, was found murdered in his native
Argentina. Police believe Paraguayan pirates came aboard the
film producer's yacht looking for valuables. No arrests have been
made as of yet although those who were present on the boat have been
detained.
AFRICAN AMERICAN MARKET:
Chris Rock's Brooklyn childhood and journey to
comedic fame is becoming a UPN pilot as part of a new agreement
between the network and the actor. Everybody Hates Chris
originally started production with 20th Century Fox but has
transferred over to Paramount Network Television. Set as a
semi-autobiographical show with Chris narrating, the comedy will be exec
produced by Ali LeRoi, Chris Rockand 3 Arts Entertainment's Michael
Rotenberg and Dave Becky.
In the next 50 years, approximately $1.1- $3.4 trillion in wealth will
be transferred from estates to U.S. African American households,
according to a new Boston College Center on Wealth and Philanthropy
(CWP) study. In addition to the 2055 predictions, "Wealth
Transfer Estimates Among African-American Households" studies
statistical patterns and trends regarding income, wealth and
philanthropic endeavor among African Americans. The study finds
that in 2001 the total net worth in U.S. African American
households exceeded $1 trillion, though the share of total household net
worth fell because the wealth in other households grew faster. The
study also notes that while the estimates for the next 50 years seem
quite large, they represent only a very small portion of the total
"wealth transfer" for the nation, which the study pegs at
approx $46.3 to $153.7 trillion. More info at

ASIAN/INDIAN MARKET:
The new Envoy Media Partners and Phuong
Nam Corporation join venture, MegaStar Cineplex, named
Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City as the first 2 locations of the
8-10 cinema complexes the company plans to build in Vietnam.
MegaStar is reportedly the first Western-financed corporation to receive
approval from the government for building complexes in the
country.
