A new Spanish-language version of ESPN the
Magazine will debut in the fall as a joint venture between
ESPN (Walt Disney) and Editorial Televisa (Grupo
Televisa). The monthly publication, titled ESPN
Deportes, will publish a preview issue for May with Editorial
Televisa taking on the role of publishing and distributing the magazine.
The content will include original Spanish-language stories, translated
pieces from ESPN the Magazine and Editorial Televisa items. ESPN
Deportes will center on US, Caribbean and Mexican league baseball, US and
international soccer, boxing, action and auto sports. Both
collaborators will participate in advertising and subscription
sales.
Hispanic Digital Network (HDN) has teamed up with Arizona's
La Voz newspaper to form a strategic ad sales
collaboration. As part of the new deal, HDN will have the
ability to sell part of the weekly publication's internet-based ad
inventory in connection to its network ad campaigns.
In addition to the English-language advertising, El Pollo Loco
premiered its Hispanic ad campaign in several West Coast
territories (Bakersfield, Fresno, LA, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Reno,
Sacramento, San Diego and San Jose). The four Spanish-language
ads were developed by cruz/kravetz:IDEAS. Centering on the
tagline Que rico pollo! (This chicken is so tasty!), the spots show
characters completely wrapped up in their food despite receiving
important news.

Reverend Al Sharpton's 90-day radio and television airplay ban for
violent music performers has received the support of hip hop magazine
The Source Magazine. "It is inspiring to see
that Reverend Al Sharpton is speaking out against the crisis of corporate
manipulation of violence in the Hip-Hop industry, which is benefiting the
bottom line of a few major conglomerates. In no way does The Source
support the censorship of Hip-Hop artists, but we are opposed to artists
and their backers that use acts of violence or the incitement of violence
over the public airwaves to promote record sales. The responsibility for
this type of destructive conduct lies with only a small group of
individuals in our industry who must be held accountable," stated
David Mays, Co-founder/CEO.
DaimlerChrysler and National Association of Black Owned
Broadcasters (NABOB) are embarking on a new collaboration with the
formation of the NABOB DaimlerChrysler Management Fellowship
Program. The educational program is geared towards increasing
the presence of minorities and, specifically, African Americans in the
communication/broadcast leadership positions and media
ownership. The fellowship program will pick 2 fellows
annually to undergo a 2-year curriculum.
