HISPANIC MARKET:
AIM Tell-A-Vision, producers of programming
including American Latino TV, is getting into the distribution business
with its new division AIM Tell-A-Vision Distribution. Based
on both coasts, the new unit will be managed by AIM's president Ernest
Cartwright from LA.
LATAM MARKET:
MTV Latin America is collaborating with
LIFEbeat on a March 24 benefit dance party in Miami. The
Music Industry Fights AIDS organization's “MTV Latin America Presents:
A LIFEbeat Benefit for HIV & AIDS Awareness" event will
present international DJs such as Flo Rino, Felix and Tom Strauch
(Germany), ToySelektah(Mexico), Mad Mats (Scandinavia), Alex Pels
(Argentina), DJ LeSpam (Colombia/Canada/Britain), DJ Rusty (Washington)
and and Ari K and Erick Paredes (Miami) starting at 9 pm. LIFEbeat
is a US-based non-profit focusing on HIV/AIDS prevention in the youth
population through music industry resources and personalities.
AFRICAN AMERICAN MARKET:
BET's 106 & Park host, AJ Calloway, is
getting a new UPN pilot titled The Show With AJ
Calloway. The comedy series will center on a late night host on
a fictional broadcast network through his onstage and offstage life (the
show is loosely based on AJ's life). The Sony Pictures TV/Handprint
project will be exec produced by David Goetch, Benny Medina, Jeff Pollack
and Evan Weiss with AJ Calloway, Adam Lublin and Mike Brillstein joining
as co-producers.
Arthel Neville, the first African American woman to host her own
CNN show (Talk Back Live with Arthel Neville), will become part of the
A Current Affair correspondent team on the West Coast. She
was previously Good Day Live's co-host in addition to past positions as
CNN Headline News anchor, Fox News Channel anchor, Fox Files senior
correspondent and more. A Current Affair is set to debut in
first-run syndication on Monday.
INDIAN MARKET:
Indian exhibitor Sathyam Cinemas inked an
installation agreement with IMAX Corporation for 2 theater
systems in Chennai (Southeast India). This deal will bring the
number of Imax screens in India to 9 in the next 3 years. The first
of the Chennai theaters will open its doors in 1 year's time with the
second anticipated by 2008.
INTERNATIONAL MARKET:
ThinkFilm, an independent distribution company,
will debut a new global sales division at Cannes this May with
Mark Horowitz in charge. Some of the titles to be offered up
with worldwide rights through the unit include the documentaries
Murderball (quadriplegic rugby players), The Aristocrats (dirty joke
through the eyes of one hundred comedians), Life With Me (Clement Virgo
feature film) and The Last Mogul (Lew Wasserman profile). Mark was
previously president of Alliance Atlantis Pictures International.
Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution is bringing a slew
of genres and programs to Cannes' MipTV. Some of these you've heard
of as they were on the air in the US this year, and others are on the Fox
US pilot list for next season:
Thief: Norman Morrill's new drama about a highly skilled team
of robbers ready to take from a large financial institution and their
personal and professional lives starring Nick Atwater, Yancey Arias,
Malik Yoba, Mae Whitman, Will Yun Lee, Michael Rooker, Clifton Collins.
Jr and Dina Meyer. The series will debut next year on
FX. Norman Morrill and Gavin Palone will exec produce with Regency
Television, Fox Television Studios and Pariah Pictures.
Point Pleasant: This Fox new drama delves into the lives of a
New Jersey community as they deal with the aftermath of a vicious storm
and the appearance of an evil girl (mortal mother and Devil father)
starring Sam Page and Elisabeth Harnois. Twentieth Century Fox
Television Production produced the series with Marty Adelstein, Neal
Moritz, Marti Noxon and Dawn Prouse as exec producers.
Jake in Progress: Premiering just this week on ABC, the
comedy centers on publicist Jake Phillips and his female trials and
tribulations as he attempts to become more serious in his
relationships. John Stamos, Ian Gomez, Rick Hoffman, Wendie Malick
and Julie Bowen star with Austin Winsberg (also the creator), Brad Grey,
Peter Traugott and Jeffrey Richman exec producing. Brad Grey Television
Productions produced Jake in Progress with Twentieth Century Fox
Television.
American Dad: This Seth MacFarlane animated sitcom spoofs
current events (and politics) through the eyes of CIA agent Stan
Smith. In addition to Seth as Stan, the show stars Wendy Schaal,
Rachel MacFarlane and Scott Grimes. Fox will debut the sitcom on
May 1. Seth, Mike Barker and Matt Weitzman are exec producing.
Family Guy: Seth McFarlane's Fox animated comedy will
bring new episodes to the Cannes event. The show is produced
by Twentieth Century with Fox Broadcasting Company.
Living with Fran: Fran Drescher's newest WB comedy
centers on a divorced mother of a 21 year old and her life as he returns
to her empty nest and into her now independent life with her 20-something
boyfriend and a teenager in the house. Fran, Ryan McPartlin, Ben
Feldman and Misti Traya star. The executive producers are Bob
Meyer, Jamie Kennedy and Fran Drescher with Regency Television.
Stacked: A comedy centering on life at a high end bookstore
and its characters starring Pamela Anderson, Tom Everett Scott and
Christopher Lloyd set to debut on Fox on April 13. It is exec
produced by Steven Levitan and Twentieth Century Fox.
Starved: Focusing in on the lives of 4 New York friends with
eating disorders, this mock documentary stars Eric Schaeffer, Laura
Benanti, Sterling Brown and Del Pentacost. FX will debut Starved in
the summer. Dan Pasternack and Eric Schaeffer are the exec
producers.
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia: Another city but still a
story of 4 friends…Based in Philadelphia, the FX (summer 2005) comedy
series working together at a bar while keeping their individual interests
in mind. Charlie Day, Nick Frenkel, Glenn Howerton, Rob McElhenney
and Michael Rotenberg are the exec producers with Charlie, Glenn and Rob
also starring in the show.
A new pre-schooler series, The Upside Down Show, will be ready for
April's MipTV as a joint production between Sesame Workshop (New
York), Nickelodeon Australia and Blink Films. Filmed
in Sydney, the show features Australia's The Umbilical Brothers
(David Collins and Shane Dundas) as they take a look at the world with
help from its viewers. Michael Bourchier (Blink) is the exec
producer of The Umbilical Brothers/Belinda Ward (Sesame Street)
co-creation.
etc., ALL MARKETS:
American Urban Radio Networks (AURN) and The
Weather Channel inked a new deal to bring customized weather
forecasts to AURN's affiliate stations in addition to exclusive
severe local weather coverage. The forecasts will air weekday
mornings with scripted forecasts at other times of the day seven days a
week. Twana James will be in charge of the Weather Channel Radio
Network's weather info team collaboration.
The Digital Intermediate Group, LLC. (co-venture between Marc
Kolbe, Craig Mumma and Prasad Labs in Asia) named Devendra Mishra
as EVP of Business Development. She was recently co-founder
of the entertainment industry management consulting firm MND
Resources.
DIC Entertainment has made several new appointments.
RyanGagerman was upped to VP of International
Consumer Products. He will manage DIC's global publishing
agents and licensees and oversee worldwide licensing programs. Ryan
was previously executive director of international licensing.
Lorne Bloch was named as Director of Licensing. He
was recently manager of domestic licensing with Viacom.
Stephanie Mente was named as Manager of International Consumer
Products from her previous position as licensor relations supervisor
at Vivendi Universal Games.
The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) has
named Damon Romine as Entertainment Media Director. Romine
will be based in Los Angeles and brings with him a wealth of
entertainment industry experience (editor of Teen, and Soap Opera
Update), and a background in lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender
(LGBT) activism.
Friday Fun Fact: Debi
Thomas was the first and only black athlete to win a medal at the Winter
Olympics (figure skating), and is the holder of two national
championships and one world title. Today she's an orthopedic surgeon at
Chicago's Northwestern University Medical School.
