HISPANIC MARKET:
Si TV's new 2-hour programming block,
Not-So-Foreign Filmmakers Showcase, will begin airing soon on the
English-language Hispanic network. In addition to well-known
independent movies and short films, the Antonio Negret-directed block
will feature wraparounds during each episode. The wraparounds will
include interviews at the hands of host Joe Hernandez-Kolski (both real
and acted “interviews with plots”) in a variety of different
locations.
On March 27 at noon, Telemundo will air the World Cup Germany
2006 qualifying match between Mexico's El Tri soccer club and
the US' Choque de Titanes (Titans Clash) from Mexico City. The
pre-match training will be covered on March 23 with additional specials
on Titulares Telemundo (March 26 at 11 pm) and Noticiero Telemundo del
Fin de Semana (March 27 at 6:30 pm). The match will be hosted
by Andres Cantor and Alejandro Blanco.
Washington DC's metro area is receiving a new English- and
Spanish-language weekly based out of Silver Spring, Md.
Washington Hoy is a collaborative effort between 3
journalists and will be distributed free at area venues. The
newspaper will be published by Alex Ormaza with Isabel Estrada-Portales
serving as Associate Publisher/Managing Editor. Circulation
Verification Council (CVC) will provide the tabloid formatted
publication's audit.
LATAM MARKET:
Panorama Mundial, an original series from the
History Channel en espanol channel, will air on April 11.
The half hour-talk monthly program is hosted by historian Alberto
Coll as he delves into a variety of topics centered around Latin
America's history. In addition to touching on each topic's history,
the show will bring in noted guests to debate different issues.
Panorama Mundial is the Spanish-language network's first-ever original
series. The April 11 show will look into Hispanic immigration to
the US. Topics previously discussed include the Mexican-American
War and Chilean president Salvador Allende's 1973 oust from power.
Turner Classic Movies is bringing Cine Mexicano: The Golden Age
to its viewers every Thursday night in May beginning onCinco
de Mayo. The 17-movie festival will include five works from Spanish
director Luis Bunuel (Los Olividados, Viridiana), films featuring Maria
Felix (Dona Barbara) and Maria Elena Marques (La Perla), two movies by
producer Fernando de Fuentes (El Compadre Mendoza and Vamanos Con Pancho
Villa) and other comedies and musicals. Other movies include
Nazarin, The Exterminating Angel, Simon of the Desert, Maria Candelaria,
Enamorada, Aventurera, Macario, Ahi Esta el detalle, Calabacitas Tiernas,
Dos Tipos de Cuidado, Ansiedad and Sombrero.
RCTV International inked a distribution agreement with Peru-based
Alomi Productions and its first title they will jointly release is
A Storm of Passion. The new novela production, starring Alejandra
Lazcano, Alejandro de la Madrid, Sebastian Ligarde and Katia Condos, will
center around two twin bothers separated when they were first
born.

INTERNATIONAL MARKET:
The BBC has announced additional layoffs
with the number set as 2,050 programming personnel receive pink
slips. Over 1,700 jobs in professional services will be eliminated
as previously announced earlier in March. The 3,000+
employees will be let go over the course of the next three years.
The breakdown includes 47 from its television unit, 150 from Radio and
Music, 58 from New Media Central, 735 from Nations and Regions, 150 from
Drama, Entertainment and CBBC, 424 from Factual and Learning, 420 from
BBC News and 66 from BBC Sport.
AETN International and Maven Networks, Inc. are partnering
to utilize Maven's Intelligent Delivery System (IDS) to aid the
global network with programming preview marketing and distribution to its
worldwide affiliates and customers. The deal covers A&E, The
Biography Channel, Crime & Investigation Network and The History
Channel. Up to this point AETN International had shipped VHS
tapes. The new system will digitally distribute the previews
through broadband video

NBC Universal International Television Distribution
named Haydn Arndt as VP/Sales Liaison for Australia and New
Zealand. He will manage the free, pay and basic cable TV sales
for the two territories. Haydn will report to Belinda Menendez,
President of NBC Universal International Television Distribution and be
based in Sydney.
Buena Vista International TV upped Catherine Powell to
Sales Director for UK and Ireland. She will manage
the UK free and pay television distribution of Buena Vista's drama and
comedy series (i.e., Desperate Housewives and Lost), Disney content,
films and ABC News shows. Catherine was previously creative
director of portfolio development group. She is replacing Haydn
Arndt and will report to Alison Homewood, VP of Sales EMEA.
MTV Russia named Leonid Yurgelas as General
Director. He will be responsible for daily creative and
commercial operations and manage the programming, production, talent
relations, distribution, ad sales, marketing and finance
departments. Leonid is taking over from MTV Russia's president
Linda Jensen. He will be based in Moscow.
Roc Brands named Jameel Spencer as Chief Brand
Strategist. In this newly created position, he will manage the
marketing aspects of Rocawear, ProKeds, Team Roc, Armadale Vodka, State
Property, Roc Digital, Rachel Roy, C Ronson, Tiret Watches, America
Magazine, Dash Films, and chairman/CEO Damon Dash's personal brand.
Jameel was previously with Bad Boy Worldwide Entertainment Group as CMO
as well as the president/partner of Blue Flame Marketing.
