Good morning! It's
Wednesday, March 23, 2005,
and this is your first early morning
Multi-Cultural
briefing.
HISPANIC MARKET:
Telemundo and The Home Depot inked a
product placement sponsorship deal which includes the official
sponsorship for the network's Mi Primer Hogar. The home
improvement program will debut this Saturday, April 2 at
noon. Home Depot will give appliances, products and services
to the Spanish-language show as well as on-air coverage through store
shopping trips, signage/logo appearances and mentions by the hosts and
decorators. Mi Primer Hogar is a home decorating reality show
where subjects undergo moving into their newly purchased home and receive
decorating help for one room from the show's decorators.
PhiladelphiaPhillies' fans will now have any additional
way to receive Spanish-language game coverage. A new 4 year
deal has been signed between the baseball team and Delaware Valley
radio stations for all 162 games. Chester's WPWA-AM will serve as
the flagship station with additional stations such as Vineland, NJ's
WMIZ-AM ready to air. Negotiations are currently underway with more
Spanish-language stations and internet availability options. Danny
Martinez will be the voice behind Spanish Beisbol Network's (SBN)
coverage of the games. There is a temporary glitch though as SBN will not
travel to cover all of the Phillies' away games…but Danny will recreate
the Spanish-language version of the plays by watching and reporting on
the games from the baseball team's home stadium. SBN's president Bill
Kulik will be the producer and color analyst.
Telemundo's Nuevas Voces de America (New Voices of America)
and its 12 current contestants will air a tribute to the late
Selena in its March 27 episode at 8 pm. The tribute coincides with
the 10th anniversary of the Tejano singer's murder. The remaining
show contestants will sing her songs for the judges (along with guest
judge Alvaro Torres).
Greyhound Lines, Inc. is starting a nationwide radio
advertising campaign geared towards the Hispanic consumer. The
spokespeople for the new campaign are comedians Wanda Sykes and Adal
Ramones. Dallas-based The Richards Group is the agency
behind the fast, enjoyable and cool theme.
A new The Real Yellow Pages ad campaign has hit the Hispanic ad
trail for BellSouth. Launching this month in Florida and
Georgia, the “Taxi” advertising will be centered on broadcast, print and
direct mail. Miami's Machado Garcia-Serra created the
ads.
AFRICAN AMERICAN MARKET:
Diane Weathers, Essence editor-in-chief, will
be leaving her position. She has been in charge of the African
American magazine for the past five years. Her reasons for leaving
centered around personal and family reasons and is reportedly not related
to the magazine's final sale last week to Time Inc. Diane will
continue to have a presence on the masthead as editor-at-large with
editorial director Susan Taylor assume her editor-in-chief
responsibilities until a replacement is found.
Regal CineMedia will be bringing a new African American kids movie
titled The Golden Blaze to select screen on April 2. The
film centers on two children and rivals who see their normal fathers turn
into super heroes after an accident. Blair Underwood and Michael
Clarke Duncan will provide the voices for the two school rivals.
The Golden Blaze will be part of a regular children's weekend matinee
series focused on the 3-9 year old crowd with G-rated films and cartoons
preceding the main show.
Rev. Al Sharpton is upping the ante by putting his money behind
his previous comments regarding violence in hip-hop music.
The reverend reportedly will invest in several unnamed companies'
stocks in order to say have a say in the companies' dealings through
stockholders' meetings. As he so aptly put it, "I don't think
too many CEOs want to see me come into his stockholders' meeting to say
they're not doing enough to stop the violence."
New African American-focused radio ads were launched by The Democratic
National Committee (DNC) last week centering on Social
Security. The 1-minute ads titled Community are an extension of
its African American newspaper ad run in February.
ASIAN/INDIAN MARKET:
The International Channel (Comcast
Corporation) will rebrand itself as AZN Television starting next
week. The English-language network has been trimming back its other
multicultural offerings in order to focus itself on Asian
Americans. Peilin Chou was named as SVP/Programming and
Production for AZN. He was previously VP/Original Programming
for Spike TV. AZN will center on drama, anime and movies.
The Bay Area's KTSF has signed a viewership data agreement with
Nielsen Media Research to provide information on Asian American
viewing habits in the area. The television station is reportedly
the first US Asian media outlet to offer its Nielsen LPM viewership info
available to advertisers.

GAY/LESBIAN MARKET:
Well, it seems there was a bit of
misunderstanding… PrideVisionhas rejected US-based Q
Television claim that it had submitted a formal purchasing offer for
the Canadian gay/lesbian network. Q made the offer announcement
last week. According to Bill Craig, PrideVision's
President/majority shareholder, "A representative of Q Television
telephoned PrideVision without invitation last week simply to explore
possibilities. If a formal offer is ever received, whether from Q
Television or others, the directors will of course have a fiduciary duty
to present the offer to shareholders.” Q has responded by saying
discussions have indeed taken place.
Despite (or rather in spite of) lawmakers view on same-s#x
marriage, advertisers have increasingly placed ads in
gay/lesbian-oriented publications. Ad spending in the
publications has jumped more than 28% from 2003 to $207 million in 2004
according to Prime Access Inc. and Rivendell Media's Gay Press
Report (2004). Gay-focused ads saw a tremendous increase
by 240+% from 2003 to 2004 (the ads are determined by messages directly
aimed at gay/lesbian viewers with its copy or art) after a 3-year
consecutive decline in this particular ad spending group. The
survey also revealed that 19 Fortune 500 companies spent advertising
money in 1994, up to 72 in 2001 and 150 in 2004. The most prolific
ads were in the auto, travel, financial services and fashion
areas.
INTERNATIONAL MARKET:
The Irish Channel America will soon make
its way across the ocean to US soil courtesy of Anner Media Group
(AMG). The Irish corporation will debut the channel on cable and
satellite for the 35 million Irish Americans in the US. In addition
to a live dual country link-up, the Irish Channel America will center on
arts, documentaries, lifestyle, movies, music, shopping, sports and
travel shows. The timeline and affiliate deals will be announced at
a later date.
Answer to Yesterday's Trivia
Question:Where are you (in TV land)
if you're dining in the Queen Victoria Pub? Known familiarly as THE
VIC, is in Walford E20 (London), on the BBC series THE
EASTENDERS. Kudos to: Robin Kenwood-ITN Networks/NY;
Jesse Murray-ABC Daytime/NY; Laura James-Nielsen Media Research/NY; Nick
Frazer/Denver; Lenny Rose-Rose Prods/LA.
Today's Trivia Question:
The intro to this show changed frequently, depending on the subject
matter. Here is one of those intros, from which you should be able
to discern the show's title: "Good evening. Let me welcome
you to this parlor of paintings. We offer them to you for your enjoyment
and edification -- feel free to dwell on them at your leisure and in your
own good fashion. But kindly don't touch, because here they frequently
touch back..." (click

and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone with your
answer. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers
from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you've been mentioned in
any of the Cynopsis editions, you can't be mentioned again that calendar
week.)
