Good Morning.  It's Tuesday, January 9, 2007, and this is your first early morning International & Multicultural briefing.

A few extra tidbits this week … Keep an eye out for an article on Israeli trends in TV programming importing and exporting in Thursday's edition (short form by email, long form available at
www.cynopsis.com ). On Friday, we will publish the much anticipated NATPE international and multicultural program "Shopping List" … speaking of which, today is the deadline if you wish to be included.

INTERNATIONAL MARKET:

CNBC is all set to start up a new dedicated business channel for sub-Saharan Africa.  CNBC Africa will replace CNBC Europe in the region when it debuts this May on Multichoice's DStv satellite service.  Zafar Siddiqi will head up the new channel as chairman from its new headquarters in Johannesburg.  The programming will consist of both regional African economic news and international updates mixed with regional business news updates every hour.  South Africa's government-funded Industrial Development Corp. is a 30% shareholder in the new network, which reportedly will take a $20 million investment to prepare operations.  At launch, the bureaus will be located in Botswana, Cape Town, Kenya, Namibia, Nigeria, and Tanzania.

VOOM HD Networks is teaming up U.K. distribution company Electric Sky to co-produce two new original high-def (HD) series. What the Window Washer Saw takes viewers out onto the hanging platforms to gain perspective on some of the boldest examples of architecture.  It is slated to premiere in 3Q2007 on GALLERY HD. Penny Revolution (9x60) documents the world of microfinance, where the poor with entrepreneurial dreams meet the lenders who help put their plans in action. The series will debut in 4Q2007 on Equator HD. VOOM HD has collaborated with Electric Sky in the past for several series including Fashion Avenue and Big Boutique in the City on Ultra HD and Ultimate Tourist Scams on Equator HD.

CABLEready has concluded deals with several Latin American networks.  Universal Channel picked up of over 60 new episodes of the true-crime series Medical Detectives. Infinito acquired 22x60 episodes of the urban legend investigation series Mostly True Stories, the 1x60 biographical special The Real Saddam, and 2x60 episodes of Someone's Watching.  The company also took two of the New York Times-produced Thomas L. Friedman specials, Searching for the Roots of 9/11 and Straddling the FenceTNT Latin America also renewed Hollywood One on One.

BBC Global Channels Asia is launching BBC Entertainment on Astro, Malaysia's direct-to-home (DTH) satellite television services provider.  The network airs top drama, comedy and light entertainment programming from the U.K., such as Doctor Who, Footballers' Wives, and more.

Bennett Media Worldwide has licensed its Bikini Destinations series to Playboy One UK.  The 30x30 series will air on Playboy TV's newly-launched free service carried on Sky (Channel 192).  Bennett also announced that its has commissioned an additional 13 half hours for delivery in May 2007 due to international demand for the show's first two seasons.

International Broadcast Communications, Inc. (IBC) has announced an 8-year deal with Hopscotch Entertainment to distribute the 80-minute documentary Midnight Movies throughout Australia. The exclusive agreement gives indie distributor Hopscotch the rights to represent and distribute the cult-classic film documentary for all television (free, pay, VOD, PPV) and DVD.  The documentary tells the story of the movies Pink Flamingos, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Eraserhead, and other late-night classics.

Ugly Betty attracted the 3rd highest audience, after the first seasons of Lost and Desperate Housewives, for any US series launch on the U.K.'s C4 in the last 10 years.  The series premiered on Channel 4 on January 5 for a 19 share and a total of 4.46 million viewers.  Among A18-34, Ugly Betty took a 33% share.

CROSS-MARKET:

Qubo's 24-hour digital network launches today, January 8, 2007, on one of the I digital channels. Qubo, launched jointly by ION Media, NBC Universal, Corus' Nelvana, Scholastic Books, and Classic Media, had its initial launch as a kids programming block on NBC Saturday Mornings and Telemundo on September 9, 2006, and will continue to run on both. The NBC block is also carried on I on Friday afternoons at 3p.

HISPANIC MARKET:

TuTv is launching a new show on its youth-oriented lifestyle and music channel, TelehitHi!, a variety magazine show with five different segments each airing at 6p on a specific day of the week, will be hosted by Telehit's host Amanda.  Every Monday, the "Kiss Connection" dating game show airs, followed by "Sustancia Activa" (Active Substance) on Tuesday, "Chicas Veneno" (Poison Girls) on Wednesday, "Magazine"on Thursday, and "Top Telehit" rounding out the week on Friday.

ConAgra Foods' ACT II Popcorn has named Lopez Negrete Communications to handle its Hispanic creative strategy.  The agency will also help with other brands including Reddi-wip, Egg Beaters and Healthy Choice.  Lopez Negrete will first begin airing the ads this year in Chicago, LA, and San Antonio.

The National Association of Latino Independent Producers (NALIP) and HBO will present the 8thAnnual NALIP Conference on March8-11 in Newport Beach, CA.  The event will be co-chaired by documentary filmmaker Evangeline Griego, Spike TV EVP Pancho Mansfield and Fox VP/Emerging Markets Rick Ramirez.  As part of its Media on the Move: Power for Independents theme, the conference will touch on aspects of the mobile media.  More info at

Radio Caracol 1260 AM will provide live coverage of Copa America 2007 soccer matches in Spanish, exclusively for South Florida.  The WSUA station will deliver a total of twenty six 2007 Copa America broadcasts, which takes places in Venezuela from June 26 to July 15.

LATAM MARKET:

FremantleMedia Enterprises inked a sale deal for its comedy format, Three's Company, to two broadcasters in Latin America. Local production company Roos Film will produce 50x30 episodes, which will air on Megavision in Chile, with pre-production to begin this month. In Ecuador, Ecuavision has commissioned 39 episodes, which they will produce, along with acquiring 70 episodes of the original U.S. series for broadcast later this year.

AFRICAN AMERICAN MARKET:

Another radio player has given in to pressure from various agencies, advertisers, Arbitron, and others to be measured by Arbitron's Portable People Meter (PPM). Radio One has consented to encoding its radio signals in Philadelphia and LA, bringing the rough total of broadcasters in the Philadelphia market on board with PPM to nearly 67%.  The African American-focused radio network's decision leaves Clear Channel Radio as the only network to not adopt the Arbitron measurement system in the city.  As one of the biggest radio groups there, it seems Clear Channel is using its network size to put pressure back on Arbitron by diluting the PPM results and affecting measurement demand by agencies and advertisers.

A few bits of BET programming updates … The Wire's season one is set to debut on January 10 at 9p with a special 3-episode mini-marathon running January 10-12.  American Gangster's series finale will air today at 10p. Don't fret though because an American Gangster Series Marathon will be on from 4-10p on January 14.  Two premieres will take place this week. Former BET ComicView alum Jordan (Lil JJ) stars in his own series, Just Jordan, debuting January 13 at 11a.  It will be followed by the network premiere of Romeo!.  The show follows Romeo and his music mogul dad, Master P, and family.

GAY/LESBIAN MARKET:

Logo will premiere the documentary Love Lessons on February 3 at 9p, just in time for Valentine's Day. Love Lessons takes a sensitive look at three singles who have turned to a new breed of professionals - same-sex matchmakers and dating coaches - for help. The program is presented as part of Logo's Real Momentum documentary series that explores the diversity and unique true-life stories of the LGBT community across America.

here! Tunes, the music publishing/virtual record label division of here! Networks, will have its live debut at this year's Queer Lounge during the 2007 Sundance and Slamdance Film Festivals. EXECUTIVE MOVES:

Javier Avitia has been upped to SVP/Business Affairs at CBS Paramount International Television.  For the past seven years, he has served as VP in the same department.  Javier will report to Susan Akens, EVP/Business Affairs.

Castalia Communications named Marc Olivier as VP/Strategy and Development. Reporting directly to President Luis Torres-Bohl, he will develop new business opportunities and will have operational responsibility for Castalia's activities in Latin America.  He was recently CEO of Los Micos Beach Golf & Resort.

Fox Sports en Espanol upped Lisa Weinstein-Scholtes and Paul Laureano to Director and Manager/Integrated Sales and Marketing, respectively. Both will continue to report to Tom Maney, SVP/Advertising Sales. In addition to advertising expansion, Lisa and Paul will be responsible for several integrated sales deals recently inked with El Reto Final Nissan 2, Sprint/Nextel's Jorge's Picks, and a fantasy league tied to the Copa Toyota Libertadores for AT&T Broadband.  Lisa will manage national integrated sales development across the network's digital content platforms including TV, online, wireless, the Fox Sports en Espanol magazine, and VOD. Paul will work with Lisa and the ad sales team on integrated sales initiatives.

Colombian journalist Victor Javier Solano has been named weekend anchor of Noticias Univision 41, the newscasts of New York's Spanish-language TV station, Univision 41 (WXTV). Victor has anchored the weekend news on a temporary basis since the summer of 2006.
