of KVEA-TV, its flagship LA-based Channel 52, with a slew
of different events. The taping of the Special Olympics benefit
concert Una Noche de Paz will start off the celebrations on
November 10. It is set to air during the holiday season. Some of
those scheduled to perform are A.B. Quintanilla & Los Kumbia Kings,
Ruben Blades and many more. Fiesta de Estrellas Telemundo,
an event at Universal Studios Hollywood, will happen on November 12 and
13 with novela and TV stars present. From November 10-13, several
Telemundo sports, entertainment and news shows will broadcast live from
several LA locations including the network's Cada Dia con Maria
Antonieta, Cotorreando, Al Rojo Vivo, Noticiero Telemundo and Titulares y
Mas programs. More info at
www.telemundo.com.
Si TV has been added to Time Warner Cable in Wilmington,
NC. This will be the first time the English-language Latino network
is being offered in the state.
People en Espanol will be coming out with a special holiday
entertaining-focused issue for its subscribers. The 68-page special
edition will feature several Hispanic entertainment celebs such as
Entertainment Tonight's Carlos Ponce, Univision's Lili Estefan,
Telemundo's Maria Celeste, music producer Emilio Estefan, ABC Extreme
Makeover: Home Edition's Eduardo Xol and others. The edition will
be found in subscribers' mailboxes the week of November 7. Holiday
ideas for parties, cooking and more will be divulged by the
celebs.
LATAM MARKET:
Walt Disney Television International Latin America
and ESPN Latin America are launching a joint venture to handle
network sales. Disney & ESPN Media Networks Latin America
will handle sales duties for ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN+,
ESPN Brasil, DisneyChannel, and Jetix.
The company is officially starting up today. HBO Latin America
Group (HBO LAG) previously managed the two companies' affiliate
sales. The new company and HBO will transition responsibilities in
the coming weeks. (The Walt Disney Company is an equity partner in HBO
LAG.) ESPN's Guillermo Tabanera has been upped to SVP.
He will continue with his duties as GM of ESPN's Spanish-speaking Latin
America and the Caribbean units in addition to overseeing the new joint
venture. Guillermo will report to both Russell Wolff, managing
director/ESPN International, and to Diego Lerner, president/The Walt
Disney Company Latin America and GM/Walt Disney Television, Disney
Channel and Jetix Latin America. German Von Hartenstein will
continue with his recent promotion to GM/ESPN Brazil in addition to
taking on new duties managing Disney and ESPN Media Networks Group's
Brazilian business. He too will report to Russell Wolff and Diego
Lerner. Both Guillermo and German will continue to report to
Russell Wolff regarding their respective ESPN jobs.

AFRICAN AMERICAN
MARKET:
A new African American talk-radio network is in
the works with Radio One and Reach Media behind the
controlling wheel. The network will launch in the beginning of 2006
with an initial offering of Monday-Friday 10a-7p programming. The
talk radio's top programming will be hosted by the Reverend Al
Sharpton. According to Target Market News, the unnamed
network will be based out of Marina Bay and air on the newly formatted
WILD-AM and FM (previously Hot 97.7 WBOT-FM), both of which
are owned by Radio One. The current plans are to launch in as many
as 10 of Radio One's 70 stations with programming to be made available to
non-Radio One stations as well, including Baltimore, Cleveland, Detroit,
Miami and Washington D.C. The Reverend's show will air 1-4p on
weekdays as a topical and somewhat political program. Doug and Ryan
Stewart (ESPN2's 2 Live Stews) have also signed on to host a 4-7p
program. The revised programming schedule for WILD-FM and AM
includes a change from hip-hop to mainstream R&B for the FM station
in the daytime and from R&B and soul to gospel for WILD-AM. The
AM station's new format does not currently include any talk programming
while FM airs Reach Media's Tom Joyner 6-10a show.
GAY/LESBIAN MARKET:
MTV Networks has made its first global sales for
Logo. It will debut in Mexico on November 4 with Sky Mexico
and in Brazil on November 18 with Sky Brazil as a pay-per-view
6-hour programming block. The programming will be renewed on a
weekly rotation with fresh films, specials and series from the US' Logo.
The network is rumored to be in talks with other Latin American pay
television operators. Logo will be the first GLBT-focused general
entertainment service to surface in Latin America. It is targeting
the A25-49 crowd.
Showtime Networks has bought the rights to Little Man and
will air the documentary in March. The honest, controversial
production is about lesbian drama Claire of the Moon's writer/director,
Nicole Conn, and her struggles with her partner, political activist Gwen
Baba, to deal with the premature birth of their son. The surrogate
mother gave birth 100 days before the planned date, with the "little
man" weighing in at under 1 pound.
INTERNATIONAL MARKET:
Italy's RAI has picked up several programs
from National Geographic Television International (NGTI) that were
produced by National Geographic Television & Film (NGT&F).
The 20 programming hours include the paranormal investigation series
Is It Real and documentary King Tut's Curse for
RaiDue. The latter show is about the young pharaoh's looks
and his death. Both were produced for the US' National Geographic
and National Geographic Channels International. RAI's RaiTre
took natural history show Predators at War and science programs
Last Man Standing and The True Face of
Hurricanes. In addition, the channel bought the Nature
Conservation Films-produced The Monkey Hunters and
Elephants of the Kilimanjaro.
Mediaset and Telecom Italia Mobile (TIM), an Italian mobile
phone operator, have inked a multi-year non-exclusive deal that will lead
to the 2006 launch of a mobile digital terrestrial TV service in
Italy. The new service will be available to UMTS mobile phones
that use DVBH (Digital Video Broadcast Handheld) a wireless transmission
technology. The multi-year deal will include programming broadcast
by Canale 5, Retequattro, Italia Uno, as well as the matches of Serie A
TIM and the Champions League with DVBH.
