Good Morning.  It's Thursday, January 4, 2007, and this is your first early morning International & Multicultural briefing.

INTERNATIONAL MARKET:

Red Bull has purchased a 95% stake in Austria's Salzburg TV from Austrian banks Raiffeisen and Spaengler and the Salzburg Economic Chamber.  The regional television channel will be added the energy drink company's properties, including Formula One teams Red Bull Racing and Scuderia Toro Rosso, the Red Bull Air Race World Series event, Austrian publishing house Red Bulletin Verlag, Austrian soccer team Red Bull Salzburg, U.S. soccer team Red Bull New York, the Seitenblicke magazine, and more.  The acquisition price was not announced. Salzburg TV airs in close to 760,000 Salzburg homes.

Liberty Global, Inc. has completed its previously announced purchase of Czech Republic cable operator Karneval.  The Karneval purchase price was $428.3 million and the company will now be integrated into Liberty's UPC Broadband group.  Liberty also sold its Belgian-based UPC Belgium to Telenet Group Holding N.V. for $245 million.

Charlotte-based edutainment company Educational Adventures (
www.e3a.com ) has established Educational Adventures International (EAI), and has named Luca Bentivoglio as President/CEO. The headquarters will be in LA.  Educational Adventures is a multi-media edutainment company centering on safety and well-being for children. Their flagship brand is Danger Rangers, an original, animated TV series with a cast of animal characters, comedy, action-adventure stories, and songs to empower children to make better safety decisions. It currently airs on public television and several VOD systems.

Israel's HOT cable platform has renewed its agreement with Dori Media Group to continue airing the VIVA and VIVA Platina telenovela networks.  As part of the agreement, both channels will continue to air through the end of 2007.  Both channels were renewed with Israeli satellite company YES as well this year.

Rainbow Media Holdings LLC has added new international broadcasters to its Mag Rack VOD content distribution list. The deals, made through iD Distribution, represent 319 VOD segments.  Here are the latest Mag Rack deals:
  • Inside Weddings (11x15) A theknot.com production which offers wedding advice picked up by Wedding TV (U.K.), TV7 (Sweden), Club Channel (Poland and Hungary), CTC Domashy Network (Russia), and Spektrum (Czech Republic)
  • Mama Gena (20x15) A Mama Gena show which teaches women to take control of their power of pleasure sold to TV7 (Sweden) and Club Channel (Central and Eastern Europe)
  • Wild Wheels (24x15) A series about the world of crazy cars with 8 segments sold to TV4 (Sweden) and 24 to Prava/Prevodi (Bosnia and Herzegovina)
  • Let's Go Garden (36x15) A program about the practical side of gardening sold to ACE (Russia)
  • Motorcycle Freedom (34x10) A short segment virtual ride on some of the latest superbikes taken by Ananey (Israel)
  • Smart Carb Gourmet (53x10) A series where nine Manhattan chef's prepare their low-carb meals sold to Ananey (Israel) and Takayal (Middle East)
Additionally, iD Distribution has added the following new Mag Rack titles to its international catalogue:
  • Buff (10x10) Segments give viewers tips and tricks to be buff for the summer
  • The Pet Shop (25x5) Fun and informative segments with answers to understanding pets from the animal's point of view

Canada's Rogers Communications Inc. will soon bring nine mainland mainly Mandarin-language China cable channels to its viewers as part of its new Chinese Great Wall TV package. The Canadian cable broadcaster  just picked up broadcast licenses from the CRTC last week according to The Hollywood Reporter.  The channels include CCTV-4, the Satellite Channel of Southern Television Guandong, Southeast TV Station, Jiangsu International TV Channel, Beijing TV, CCTV Entertainment Channel, Dragon TV, China Yellow River Television Station and Hunan Satellite TV.

CROSS-MARKET:

HISPANIC MARKET:

mun2 is debuting two original programs, The Chicas Project and Have You Cine?, as well as a special mun2-customized broadcast of Madonna's worldwide 25-city Confessions Tour. Premiering on January 27 at 8p, The Chicas Project is a reality/lifestyle-based 30-minute weekly show following the adventures of mun2 on-air hosts Crash and Yasmin. Have You Cine? debuts at 10p as a monthly movie showcase that highlights Latino films and filmmakers with celeb guests making appearances as well. The show is hosted by mun2's Renato Lopez and will kick off in January with the premiere of Motorcycle Diaries. One week before the debut of both shows, a 120-minute broadcast of Madonna's Confessions Tour will air on January 20 at 10p with concert footage, hosted vignettes, and fun facts and trivia.

Si TV has been added to the Comcast cable systems in Oregon and SW Washington.

Casting Call: Galavision announced a national call-to-entry inviting viewers to be contestants on Mision: Reportar (Mission: Reporter). This first reality show for the network will feature 10 contestants competing for a job as a reporter for Univision, TeleFutura and Galavision.  Premiering this spring, it will include showcase weekly challenges watched over by celeb judges where teams will interview celebs and cover major news events for reports that will air on some of Univision Networks' programs. Two finalists will compete in the live grand finale, where viewers will be able to vote for their favorite online and via text messages.  All submissions must be completed by January 31, 2007. Contestants must be 21 years or older, U.S. Citizens, fluent in Spanish and, if chosen as a finalist, must be available to participate in the program from March 5 through April 5, 2007, in Miami. LATAM MARKET:

Mexican director/actor Sergio Jimenez passed away on Tuesday from a heart attack at the age of 69.  Over the course of his nearly 50-year acting career, he appeared in more than 50 films and TV productions, and he had been directing telenovelas since the 1980s.  Sergio was the director of Televisa's The Prettiest Ugly Girl.

AFRICAN AMERICAN MARKET:

Black Family Channel will debut Robert Townsend's World According to Kids today at 8p.  The show is a take on the classic "Kids Say the Darndest Things," as seen through the eyes of filmmaker Robert Townsend. Charles Saunders hosts.

INDIAN/ASIAN MARKET:

Kylin Kids Learning Chinese, co-produced by KyLinTV and Hunan Golden Eagle Broadcasting System, launched Monday on KyLinTV. The show includes original and creative Chinese instruction for youngsters on both Chinese and American culture based off of an IPTV platform.  The 300 episodes offered cover Chinese characters, encyclopedia, idioms, nursery rhymes, and other content.

GAY/LESBIAN MARKET:

Logo is launching What She Said (working title) online today.  The weekly 10-minute talk show is the network's first original program created exclusively for the online platform. The content revolves around conversations between four co-hosts and guests about the week's news in lesbian pop culture and entertainment with new installments premiering every Thursday at Logo's AfterEllen.com and LOGOonline.com. The show's co-hosts are Chagmion Antoine from CBS News on Logo, Lauren Blitzer, author of Same Sex in the City: So Your Prince Charming Is Really a Cinderella, poet Stacyann Chin, and Sarah Warn, editor of AfterEllen.com.

EXECUTIVE MOVES:

NBC Universal International Television Distribution has promoted several key execs in Europe.
  • In London, Don McGregor has been upped from VP to SVP/Sales Liaison. He will manage free and pay TV sales of NBC Universal product in the U.K., in addition to overseeing Scandinavia, Benelux, Israel, Turkey, South Africa, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. Don reports to Belinda Menendez.
  • In Paris, Carolyn Stalins has been promoted from VP to SVP/Sales Liaison, also overseeing free and pay television sales of NBC Universal product in France, Italy and Germany. Carolyn reports to Belinda Menendez as well.
  • Also based in London, Martine Meunier has been upped from Director to VP/Sales Liaison for Eastern Europe. Prior to joining NBC Universal in 2002, she served as the TV and video sales manager for Central and Eastern Europe at StudioCanal. Martine reports to Don McGregor.

VNU Business Media has named Eric Mika as SVP and Managing Director/International for its Film & Performing Arts and Music unit.  He will manage global sales, marketing and business development for the company's brands, including The Hollywood Reporter and Film Journal International.  In addition, Eric will collaborate with Mitch Neuhauser, VP/Film Group Expos, on CineAsia and Cinema Expo International franchise growth.  Eric was previously at Variety as VP and Managing Director/International.  He will be based in London and report to John Kilcullen, SVP/Film & Performing Arts, Music and Literary and Publisher/The Reporter.

The newly established Educational Adventures International division of Educational Adventures, Inc has named Luca Bentivoglio as President/CEO. He will be responsible for global co-productions, acquisitions and international television/DVD distribution and merchandise licensing on behalf of the company's Danger Rangers franchise as well as its other children's brands currently in development. Luca's previous experience includes senior level positions with Warner Brothers, Telemundo, Univision and Latino Public Broadcasting. This past fall, he launched VOCES, the first Latino anthology series on Public TV.  He will report to Mike Moore, Educational Adventures, Inc.'s CEO.

GolTV Inc. has named Deborah Montiel as Director/Marketing.  She will be responsible for the day to day operations for all marketing efforts.  Deborah was previously Director/Marketing at HBO Cinemax/Latin America.

Lopez Negrete Communications has named Federico Traeger as Creative Director.  He will work with creative directors Luis Gonzalez, Jaime Belden and Luis Cuenca.  Federico was recently VP/Executive Creative Director at New York's The Bravo Group/Young & Rubicam.  He will report to VP and Executive Director Javier Gonzalez-Herba.
