Edition 1/03/07 Good Morning. It's Wednesday, January 3, 2007, and this is your first early morning International & Multicultural briefing. INTERNATIONAL MARKET: Globosat Programadora and Playboy TV Latin America have teamed up to launch Playboy do Brasil Entretenimento in Brazil in 1Q2007. The new joint venture will handle the two companies' Brazilian adult properties, including Globosat's For Man and Sexy Hot (including website) and Playboy TV Latin America's Fresh!, G Channel, Playboy TV, Playboy TV Movies, Private, Shorteez, Spice Digital Networks, Venus, Venus XXL, and Xcess, according to World Screen. Korea's SK Telecom and HBO launched a new mobile service which includes Curb Your Enthusiasm, Sex and the City, and Six Feet Under full episodes. As part of the new agreement, a free trial period will be offered through January 21 with 4 eps of Sex and the City and Six Feet Under each. Anime Network will host the U.S. VOD TV premiere Air Gear: East Side Showdown on January 25, 2007. Targeted to teens and up, the action series is set in the world of Storm Riders where individuals and gangs go up against one another on Air Treks, which are motor-powered inline skates. Air Gear is based on the popular manga series by OhGreat! and produced in Japan by Toei Animation. ADV Films will release the unedited volume one of Air Gear on DVD the following month on February 6, 2007. Anime Network is a unit of A.D. Vision, inc., which is also home to ADV Films and Newtype USA. China's Jiang Tong Animation Co. Ltd. is developing and producing an animated TV series version of Mulan, based on the ancient Chinese allegorical poem Mu Lan Ci. Expected to be completed by the end of this year the series, Hua Mulan (52x22) will more closely reflect the patriotic bent of the original text in which the heroic young girl, Mulan, dons men's clothing and takes her aging father's place in the imperial army, ultimately fighting off the Huns. So popular is the story of Mulan, which was made widely popular outside of China by Disney's animated movie Mulan (1998), the story has also been adapted as a musical/opera, Mulan Psalm that has been running in China for about a year and was also performed at NY's Lincoln Center. Additionally, the Weinstein Company is developing a live-action feature film adaptation of Hua Mulan to be released under the company's new Dragon Dynasty banner. HISPANIC MARKET: padma media & marketing, a new urban-focused full-service consumer, fashion, beauty, and entertainment communications agency, has been launched by Ana Lydia Ochoa. The agency will center on English- and Spanish-language programs and initiatives. The company is already working with Americas United Bank, TCS' Experiencia, and others. GAY/LESBIAN MARKET: Logo unveiled new programming geared towards its lesbian viewers. CROSS-MARKET: ABC just launched "Be Ugly '07," a pro-social campaign that promotes self-esteem and empowerment for girls tied to the network's Ugly Betty series with cross-network support, an original song, stunts, appearances, interstitials, a dedicated web site ( www.BeUgly07.com ), and an event designed to create awareness. The campaign began on New Year's Eve with ABC Family and SOAPnet marathons and hundreds of Betty look-alikes in Times Square, Walt Disney World, and the Rose Bowl Parade handing out "Ugly Betty" masks to help people see the world through Betty's eyes, where ugly is beautiful. ABC is teaming up with the non-profit Girls Inc.to debut a t-shirt designed for the campaign to raise money for organization. Singer/songwriter Jason Mraz has composed an original song specifically for the campaign in both English and Spanish, to be released for download in January through the iTunes Store. Co-produced by People Magazine and People En Espanol, and created by ABC, an original 30-minute special, The Beauty of Ugly Betty, will made available to ABC affiliates and The Walt Disney Companies' cable channels in English and Spanish.
