Edition 12/20/06 Good Morning. It's Wednesday, December 20, 2006, and this is your first early morning Multi-Cultural briefing. HISPANIC MARKET: ESPN inked a 5-year agreement with the Arena Football League (AFL) that will begin with the 2007 season, a change as NBC has been the league's carrier for the past 3 years. As part of the deal, 17 regular season and 9 postseason games will air on ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC with ESPN2 carrying Monday primetime games from March 12 through June 25. ESPN Deportes, ESPN Radio and ESPN.com are a few of the 15 media platforms also set to air the games. ESPN also picked up a minority AFL ownership stake in the league and national broadcast rights for an undisclosed amount. In an interesting switch-eroo, Grupo Gallegos has been picked by Target to work on Hispanic advertising on a project basis. The agency dropped out of competitor Wal-Mart's Hispanic agency review just last week. Grupo Gallegos will start out with Target's first Hispanic interactive initiative with planning, positioning, creative development and execution responsibilities for Target.com. LATAM MARKET: One South Floridian TV station has put a foot forward to broadcast TV Marti, a U.S. government-funded, anti-Castro channel beamed to Cuba and also available on the Internet. Although the station was banned from airing in the U.S., an exception was made to grant TVC Broadcasting's Azteca America affiliate WPMF 38 permission to broadcast. The channel will air two 30-minute weekday newscasts at 6 and 1130p, one-minute news shorts from 12p-12a, and several Saturday programs in the future. The amount paid for the shows was not announced. ASIAN/INDIAN MARKET: ImaginAsian Pictures will release its first theatrical release, the epic Vietnamese American saga, Journey from the Fall, directed by Ham Tran. Starring Kieu Chinh and Long Nguyen, the film will open in select New York and LA theatres on March 23, 2007, followed by a nationwide release on March 30. It tells the untold stories of what happened to millions of Vietnamese in the aftermath of the Vietnam war. INTERNATIONAL MARKET: Granada International has signed its first output deal with Skai TV, selling over 200 hours of programming to the Greek outlet. The multi-year output deal covers TV movies and drama in addition to factual and children's programming such as Age of Aids, China Inside; My Parents are Aliens, and Worst Witch, among others. As part of their 4-year agreement, Europe-based Sportfive and ethnic internet TV broadcaster JumpTV are partnering up to market the sports rights marketing firm's sporting properties on www.JumpTV.com and its Hispanic sports portal, www.SportsYa.com. JumpTV will hold the Internet broadcast marketing rights for close to 200 UEFA Euro2008 qualifying matches with half being exclusive to JumpTV as of March 2007. ABC has ordered a pilot of Football Wives, based on the U.K. series Footballers' Wives, which focused on the U.K. football game of soccer. The original airs on BBC America. From Touchstone Television, Football Wives is about the significant life change of women who marry NFL pro ball players. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group (WBHEG) signed a videogame distribution deal with Codemasters, Inc. for distribution and sales in North America. From April 2007 through May 2008, WBHEG's Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and Warner Home Video will be in charge of the Codemasters portfolio's distribution, sales and trade marketing. Some of the titles n the deal are DIRT: Colin McRae Off-Road, Overlord, Clive Barker's Jericho, and others. National Geographic Television International has signed a group of new licensing agreements for its special Toot & Puddle: I'll Be Home for Christmas (1 x 45') with broadcasters including: ARD and Ki.Ka in Germany; Nickelodeon in both the UK and Australia; YLE Finland; TV2 Norway; DR1 Denmark; and ATV Hong Kong. Based on the Holly Hobby book of the same name, Toot & Puddle: I'll Be Home for Christmas is aimed at Kids 3-8 and families and is produced by National Geographic Kids' Entertainment, in association with has been picked up by Warner Home Video.
