CYNTHIA TURNER'S
Cynopsis: Kids!
06/10/05

Good morning. It's Friday, June 10, 2005, and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

In our nation's capital yesterday, a House Appropriations subcommittee voted to approve a new bill that will see budgets sliced for both public TV and radio.  Specifically in the line of fire in the kid TV universe is the elimination of the full $23m in funding for Public TV's Ready to Learn initiative.   Ready to Learn provides some funds for PBS series including, Sesame Street, Between the Lions, Arthur, Reading Rainbow, Clifford the Big Red Dog and could have Buster sending smoke signals instead of postcards. For Buster, this follows the recent upset over an episode of Postcards From Buster episode when Buster visited a Vermont home with lesbian parents.  Though the President proposed a small budget reduction for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting this past winter, yesterday's subcommittee vote would also eliminate all government monetary funds intended for the CPB over the course of the next two years, beginning with a $100m decrease in funding to $300m for next year.  Public TV relies on considerable CPB funding for it programming.  National Public Radio receives less than 1% of its funding from government sources, but NPR member stations would also be hurt by these budget cuts. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting is the organization that was set up in 1968 to establish and distribute funds for both public TV and radio.  PBS was created in 1969, the same year that Sesame Street premiered on public TV stations, and the following year National Public Radio was founded.  The good news, if there is any at all in such a squelching of financing for kid's programming, is that private corporations and individuals help to provide a good sum of the funding and underwriting for our public TV and radio systems both on a national and local market level.  I hate the funding drives as much as anyone, but if it keeps the programming going, so be it.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT...

Boomerang features The Pink Panther in a new half-hour series that premieres Monday, June 27, 7:30p.  The show is comprised of the 90+ theatrical shorts produced from 1964-1977 and the 84 animated TV episodes produced from 1978-1995, and will air daily on the channel.  Boomerang is Cartoon Network's 24/7 commercial-free TV network that features classic cartoons including those from Hanna-Barbera, Warner Bros. and others.  The debut of The Pink Panther show was originally slated to coincide with the summer 2005 release of Sony's feature film The Pink Panther; the movie release has since been shifted to February 2006.

TV land will air a two-hour Ren & Stimpy marathon Friday June 17, 12a-2a, in support of the June 28 DVD release of the Ren & Stimpy: Seasons Three and a Halfish.  The release is a three disc set that includes all of the episodes of season three of the animated series as well as half of the episodes from season four.  Added extras on the DVDs include audio commentary from series creator/animator John Kricfalusi and members of Spumco Animation.  Ren & Stimpy premiered on Nickelodeon August 1991.

Friday Fun Fact:  Sixty-three years before Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith co-starred in the box office sci-fi smash Men in Black, the Three Stooges starred in a 19-minute comedy short also titled Men in Black (1934). Unlike the 1997 film, the goofy trio of Moe, Larry, and Curly were inept doctors at a hospital where they disrupted patients and staff.

Answer to Yesterday's Trivia Question: Who starred in "The Cat From Outer Space"? SANDY DUNCAN, KEN BERRY.  Kudos to:  Pauline DeRosier-The Hotel Networks/NY; Kurtis Humsfield-Fox 9 KMSP/Minneapolis.

Today's trivia question:  Horse and Mr. Nillson were story sidekicks for this famous book and film character.  That character is the great ___________?  ( with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone with your answer. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you've been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can't be mentioned again that calendar week.)
