The Netherlands became the first country to switch its signals completely from analog to digital yesterday. The vast majority of Dutch consumers with televisions have cable with only 74,000 households out of the country's 16 million citizens, still using analog and antennas. The former analog bandwidth is being used by Royal KPN NV to air digital TV through various pay packages although it must also offer the three state-financed TV channels and regional broadcasters for free. The Dutch company licensed the bandwidth through 2017 and is footing the bill to build the digital hardware capabilities (i.e., broadcasting masts). The estimated annual savings from the switch to digital are projected at $14 million. Indie media communications company Carat has published revised forecasts for global advertising expenditure in 2006 and 2007. According to their latest forecast, international advertising expenditure is expected to grow at 6%, up from its previous forecast of 5.7%. 2007 global advertising expenditure is forecast to grow at 5.8%, up from the previous forecast of 5.5%.
