Cynopsis: Multi-Cultural & International
Edition 12/11/06 Good Morning. It's Monday, December 11, 2006, and this is your first early morning Multi-Cultural briefing. HISPANIC MARKET: English-speaking Hispanics may be more likely to watch TV away from home than are their Spanish-speaking counterparts, and the difference between the two linguistic but ethnically similar groups may increase with age, according to an analysis of Arbitron data from the Houston TV market (2,200 person Portable People Meter [PPM] panel), the nation's tenth largest. A study of the PPM data for Univision's November 12 airing of the Latin Grammys scored higher than average out-of-home viewership at 18.9% for the three key demographic groups, A18-34, A18-49, and A25-54. Typically, Arbitron has recorded an average out-of-home viewing component of about 13%. However, when the difference in language preference is noted, the older audience groups were more likely to watch away from home than their younger counterparts. Out-of-home Latin Grammy viewership among Hispanics A18-34 stands at 19.9% for Spanish-speakers and 19.7% for English-speakers. However, the A18-49 age group saw 17.2% out-of-home viewing among Spanish-speaking Hispanics, while among their English-speaking counterparts the out-of-home viewing percentage is 24.3%. Among the A25-54 group, Spanish-speaking with 16.9% and English-speaking 22.1%. While Univision offered a live, English translation of the Latin Grammys, few non-Hispanics watched, at least in Houston. According to the Arbitron PPM data, barely 1.6% of the Latin Grammy audience was non-Hispanic. LATAM MARKET: Televisa's Videocine has licensed the U.S. and Canadian rights to its home video library to The Weinstein Co. (TWC). TWC's Genius Products will be in charge of distribution with rollouts expected this spring. The Videocine film unit's library currently holds 178 titles such as El Tigre de Santa Julia, Corazon de melon, and many others. The agreement also includes the future possibility of co-productions according to Variety. It delivered a 1.5 rating with 1.7 million total viewers, making it the highest-rated second episode of a series on BET. This episode comes in as the #3 original episode telecast in BET history, following Lil' Kim: Countdown to Lockdown's 1.7 and American Gangster's premiere episode's 1.6 rating. The third episode, airing on December 12 at 10p, looks at Lorenzo "Fat Cat" Nichols. INTERNATIONAL MARKET: ESPN and ABC have picked up the U.S. broadcasting rights to the EURO 2008 soccer championships from the Union des Associations Europeennes de Football (UEFA). ABC will only air two soccer matches while ESPN will broadcast the rest. ESPN also acquired the Spanish-language rights for ESPN Deportes and the pay TV rights for Latin America. The tournament, which happens every 4 years, will take place June 7-29, 2008 in Austria and Switzerland. For other areas of the world, UEFA sold ESPN Star Sports the Indian subcontinent rights in addition to the ability to sublicense the South Asian terrestrial broadcasting rights. The Middle Eastern and North African rights were picked up by Al Jazeera while PCCW took them for Hong Kong. ABC has a new game show in development from Phil Gurin, the producer of The Weakest Link, called Wanna Bet? The show is currently a major league hit in Germany, and ABC is looking at making a stateside version. The idea is simple - contestants bet if they can pull off outrageous and perhaps ridiculous stunts. And other contestants gamble on the potential success of the stunt. The original German version also includes musical performances and celebrities - no decision yet if the US format will include celebrities on a regular basis. New foreign investment in television and film companies has been banned by the Chinese government. Instead, the State Administration of Radio, Film & Television said international media companies interested in starting new projects in the country need to work with local partners on individual initiatives. A previous 2004 ruling allowed a minority stake in, or forming joint ventures with, local production companies. Taffy Entertainment has sold Marvel Entertainment's Fantastic Four to Canada's YTV and Vrak TV, Cartoon Network Germany, and Spain's TV Catalunya and ETB. More deals for the cartoon series were signed with Belgium's Club RTL, the Middle East's MBC, Singapore's TV12, Malaysia's NTV 7, and Greece's Alter Channel. French production house MoonScoop Productions, Marvel Comics and Cartoon Network Europe co-produced the show, which will be cross-merchandised next year with a video game, toys, DVD release, and more. Paramount Home Entertainment, Toonz Animation India and Commotion Pictures have partnered to produce the animated fantasy movie Dragonlance, which is based on Wizards of the Coast's Dungeons and Dragons property. The movie will be released theatrically in India by Toonz in spring 2007, while Paramount Home Entertainment will release the movie on DVD in the US and internationally, outside of Asia, in fall 2007. Will Meugniot will direct the movie from a George Strayton screenplay, which is adapted from Dragons of Autumn Twilight, the first book in the Dragonlance Chronicles. The authors of Dragons of Autumn Twilight, Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman were also part of the writing process. The voice cast for Dragonlance includes Keifer Sutherland, Lucy Lawless, Michael Rosenbaum and Michelle Trachtenberg. Wizards of the Coast is a unit of Hasbro. EXECUTIVE MOVES: Ignacio Polanco Moreno has been named to succeed as Chairman of Prisa when his father steps down from that post in the future. At the board meeting, the 77-year old Jesus de Polanco proposed that his son Ignacio, presently Corporate Assistant to the Chairman, be appointed Deputy Chairman, with a view to his eventually taking over as Chairman of the Group. The Board of Directors passed the resolution by a unanimous vote. Paramount Digital Entertainment has named Derek Broes as SVP/Worldwide Business Development. He will oversee Paramount content distribution opportunities on broadband and mobile platforms, reporting to Thomas Lesinski, Paramount Digital Entertainment's CEO. Derek was previously with Microsoft as Senior Director/Global Wireless Strategy and Business Development.
