Cynopsis:Kids!
10/11/05
Good morning. It's
Tuesday, October 11,
2005, and this is your first early morning
Kids! briefing.
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed into law a bill restricting
the sale & rental of ultra-violent video games to minors.
Games that contain the violence outlined in the bill must include a label
on the front of the box that reads "18+", in order to be sold
in California. Those retailers who violate the law will be served with a
$1,000 fine. In signing the bill, Schwarzenegger joined Governors Rod
Blagojevich of Illinois and Jennifer Granholm of Michigan, who recently
signed similar legislation in their states. Upon Schwarzenegger's signing
of the bill, Douglas Lowenstein President/Entertainment Software
Association, the organization that represents the interactive video game
industry, said, "We are disappointed that politicians of both
parties chose to toss overboard the First Amendment and free artistic and
creative expression in favor of political expediency." Just as it
has in Illinois and Michigan, the Entertainment Software Association
intends to file a lawsuit in California against the enactment of the law.
The organization has filed similar lawsuits in Washington State and
Missouri where similar video-game sales laws have been overturned by the
courts there.
Mattel, Inc. has consolidated the Mattel Brands and
Fisher-Price Brands divisions into one division called
Brands. The new global Brands division includes the Barbie, Hot
Wheels and Fisher-Price brands as well as licensed entertainment
properties, including toys for Batman, Dora-the-Explorer and Sesame
Street. Neil B. Friedman will move from President of
Fisher-Price Brands to President/Brands, with a primary directive of
coordinating activities across four major brand groups within Mattel:
that is, Boys/Entertainment; Girls; Infant-Preschool; and Fisher-Price
Friends. Matthew Bousquette, the former President of Mattel
Brands, exits the company to pursue other business ventures after 17-yrs
at Mattel.
NEW PRODUCTION &
DEVELOPMENT
Foothill Entertainment Inc. will attend MIPCOM
Junior for the first time this month showcasing a number of properties
including those from Phew!! (UK), phuuz entertainment inc.
(US), Papageno Films (New Zealand) and Seoul Movie:
Phew's Food Chain has been optioned and is being developed by
Warner Bros. Animation, while Me and My Shadow is currently being
developed as an Australia/Ireland co-production. Foothill hopes to seal
deals for Phew's property Snapper at the upcoming market.
phuuz's property Kid Kaiju has been optioned and is in
development with Warner Bros. Animation, and Special Delivery is
in the pilot process in Quebec by producer, Sarbakan. Foothill
anticipates the signing of several deals during MIPCOM for these two
properties as well as for the phuuz property Iconcicles.
The Dress Up Box (52 x 5min), the Papageno Films' live action
pre-school series. Foothill has already closed deals in the US and is the
negotiation process with licensees in other territories. The Dress
Up Box airs in New Zealand on TV3.
My Little Fox (26 x 30min) a new animated series from Seoul
Movie. Targeted to K6-10 the series features a 2D animation style.
