Good Morning.  It's Wednesday, December 6, 2006, and this is your first early morning Multi-Cultural briefing.

HISPANIC MARKET:

The latest numbers are out from TNS Media Intelligence … The first 9 months of this year showed a 4% jump up for total media advertising expenditures to $108.4 billion over the first nine months of 2005. Ad spending totals for Spanish-language television was up by 19.1% with $3.2 billion, partially as a result of World Cup advertising, and well exceeded general market broadcast network spending which was up year to year by only 3.8% with a total of $16.6 billion.  Spanish-language newspapers saw a 9.4% jump to $273 million, a similar increase to Spanish-language magazines' 9.6% increase to $107 million.  More info at www.tns-global.com .

As part of Univision's on-going health initiative, Salud es Vida…!Enterate! (Lead a Healthy Life…Get the Facts!), Univision will air a 30-minute special on December 9 at 10a titled Diabetes...Su Guia de Prevencion (Diabetes…Your Guide to Prevention). The special's host, Ana Maria Canseco of Univision's Despierta América, will guide viewers through education about Diabetes, its complications, and how to control and prevent further progression of this disease.

AFRICAN AMERICAN MARKET:

TV One's General Counsel John Jones passed away Sunday night at the age of 38 from a heart attack.  John also served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a fighter squadron logistics officer in addition to attaining an MBA from Webster University and a University of Maryland juris doctorate.  TV One Pres/CEO Johnathan Rodgers said: "John played a critical role in TV One's genesis, working tirelessly to see that TV One's distribution and other legal agreements necessary to get a fledgling network off the ground were favorable and well-executed. He not only was a talented and hard-working executive, he was an incredibly kind and thoughtful person, someone who can truly best be described as a gentleman."  Services will be held tomorrow morning at Maple Springs Baptist Church in Capitol Heights, Md.

JEWISH MARKET:

Do you wait with bated breath for the one Hanukkah song on the radio (Adam Sandler's SNL Happy Hannukah) around holiday time?  Well, not to fret, XM Satellite Radio is debuting a new Jewish culture national broadcast channel for 8 "crazy" nights.  Airing from December 15 (the first night of the Jewish holiday) through December 23, the channel will be dedicated to Hannukah music and conversation about traditions in addition to the Hanukkah candlelight blessings every night.

GAY/LESBIAN MARKET:

here! has acquired the worldwide rights to The DL Chronicles television series from creators Quincy Le Near and Deondray Gossett. The network plans to debut the first three episodes this spring and will be producing up to 9 additional episodes with 2 Cents Productions in 2007.  The DL Chronicles tells the stories of men of color who by consequence and by choice, live sexually duplicitous and secret lifestyles. Narrated by journalist Chadwick Williams, the series delves into the different lives and experiences of DL Men of Color across social, cultural, and economic boundaries.

CROSS-MARKET:

MTV will air MTV Unplugged: KORN, an upcoming installment of its Unplugged series, live across all of its multiple platforms including MTV, mtvU, MTV Tr3s, MTV.com, wireless and more. This latest rockers edition will be an MTV global TV event premiering in the U.S. and across multiple continents including Europe, Asia and South America in February 2007.  MTV Unplugged: KORN will feature acoustic performances of the band's hits, along with several new songs exclusive to their Unplugged performance.  It is scheduled to be filmed December 9 at MTV's Times Square studio.

INTERNATIONAL MARKET:

We talked about it way back in October (10/26 to be exact) and it has come to fruition.  ESPN is purchasing the North American Sports Network (NASN) from Irish sports broadcaster Setanta Sport Holdings Ltd. and private equity firm Benchmark Capital Europe for $107-120 million (80-90 million euros), including debt assumption.  The sports network is available in 26 European nations and 6 million households.  It airs 800+ live and as-live sports events annually, including 200 live NHL, NFL, and All-Star Baseball League games.  A closed deal is expected in the beginning of 2007, dependent on the regulatory seal of approval.

Canada-based Associated Producers has finished production in Israel on a new Biblical documentary named The Tomb (tentative title).  Exec Producer James Cameron and Director Simcha Jacobovici (The Exodus Decoded) have created the drama to reflect key scenes from the Gospels for airing on the U.S.' Discovery Channel and Canada's VisionTV.  James is also the feature-length program's exec producer while .  Using modern day archaeology and forensics, The Tomb will take a new look at Biblical events and specifically New Testament history.

BBC America is teaming up with its U.K. BBC counterpart, Jennifer Saunders (Ab Fab creator/star) and Dawn French (also an AB Fab star) to produce two comedies with exec producer Jon Plowman (The Office).  Jennifer will co-star in both and write with Tanya Byron.  Clatterford, co-starring Joanna Lumley, follows the mishaps at an English small town's women's club.  The Life and Times of Vivienne Vyle with co-star Miranda Richardson is a dark comedy set against a talk show backdrop according to Variety.  The initial order for 7 episodes each is already in with Clatterford expected to debut in 1Q2007 and The Life sometime next year. 

EXECUTIVE MOVES:

ContentFilm plc's Fireworks International pulled in Jonathan Ford as VP/Digital Distribution. He will be responsible for the licensing of all Fireworks International's new and library properties to digital media channels throughout the world, including on-demand, broadband and mobile platforms.  Based in the London office, he will also be manage operations for the roll-out of HEAVY WORLDWIDE under the company's distribution deal with HEAVY.COM.  Most recently, Jonathan worked for Sony Pictures Television International as Director/Digital Initiatives, Europe.

HIT Entertainment named Antonio Huab as VP/Asia. He will manage the company's Asia Pacific consumer products and TV distribution division out of HIT's recently opened office in Hong Kong.  Antonion comes to HIT from his previous job at Hutchison Harbour Ring as Deputy General Manager for Hong Kong, Macau and Greater China.

HBO upped Jennifer Bowen to SVP/International Distribution. Previously VP/Sales, Jennifer will continue to report directly to Charles Schreger (President/International Distribution) and oversee all international TV sales as well as all other non-theatrical sales such as pay-per-view and airline sales.  Continuing to report to Jennifer, but in a new role, is Dan Selig.  He has been named as Director/International Distribution. An HBOer since 2004, Dan previously served as Director/Sales, concentrating on all non-theatrical sales.  Wanda Williams also joins the sales team as Director/Non-Theatrical/Boxing Sales. Previously a product marketing manager at Continental Airlines, Wanda will concentrate on boxing and airline sales, as well as explore opportunities for HBO-branded channels on airlines globally. She also reports directly to Jennifer.

: Launched on March 1, 2005, tvK ( www.tvk24.com ) is a 24-hour digital basic Korean-language network with original programming tailored to Asian Americans. tvK is the flagship channel with general entertainment content including live news, dramas, movies, documentaries, sports, fashion, food, and educational programs. tvK2 targets a young audience by showcasing, entertainment shows, PC and Video gaming, sports, specialty shows and music videos. It is available free to cable carriers nationwide and distributed by International Networks.
