Good morning. It's Thursday, December 15, 2005, and this is your first
early morning Kids! briefing.
MTV Networks and Amp'd Mobile, an entertainment broadband
wireless service provider, have inked an agreement that will see MTVN invest
$50m in Amp'd Mobile's soon to be launched youth targeted mobile content
service, and provide content. Under the terms of the agreement, Amp'd
Mobile will deliver video clips, ringtones, ringbacks, screensavers, wallpapers
and the like from MTVNs' varied properties. Together MTVN and Amp'd will
develop original made-for-mobile content created exclusively for Amp'd Mobile
subscribers, in addition to developing joint marketing and promotions across MTV
Networks' brands and screens. Amp'd Mobile will begin its soft launch
today, online exclusively at Ampdmobile.com, with a full launch planned before
year's end. Earlier this week, Amp'd announced content deals with both CBS and
UPN, which like MTV Networks are also part of Viacom.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
The
European Commission has proposed a plan called Television Without
Frontiers Directive, designed to modernize the TV rules in the European
Union. The new rules are a a result of the technological progress and
changes in the market and in how people use and watch television, and how that
relates to TV advertising. The first calls for a relaxation of product
placement within programmingand daily advertising limits. It also
allows for experimenting with different advertising forms, such as the
split-screen, as well as virtual and/or interactive advertising. Secondly,
the Commission says there must be a clear set of rules and a framework for
product placement. With that said, the Commission also is quick to
point out that the new product placement rules will not apply to kid's
programming, news or public affairs programming. These type of shows
cannot be interrupted more than once in every 35 minutes for advertising
breaks. In order for these rules to go into effect they must first be
approved by the European Parliament and EU member states.
Sony Picture
Television International and Korea's DTH's SkyLife will launch the Animax
channel in the middle of 2006.
MORE KIDS
STUFF
World Wide Motion Pictures Corp. has licensed the
rights to 26 episodes of the popular Chinese animated series
Skateboyand the Quest to China, produced by Golden Ocean for
Chinese broadcaster CCTV (China Central Television). The animated series will be
released in North America on DVD through Aristea Entertainment and Pierson
Media. Under its original title, Flutemaster, Skateboy was one of the most
popular programs ever aired on CCTV, reaching an audience of 140 million viewers
during its broadcast in 2004. Created and developed by Barry Glasser and
produced by Glasser, Lili Deng and Louis Liu, Skateboy is the fantasy adventure
of a California beach kid who finds himself in a world of magic, mythical
creatures and a mist-covered lost continent. The series, which was
developed in Hollywood and produced and animated in China, is a between American
and Chinese animators and broadcasters.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Marvel Comics has
relatively quietly launched Digital Comics, ( http://marvel.com/digitalcomics/catolog/catalog.htm ),
the newest comics area on its website. The new offerings include episodes
of Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, Captain America, She-Hulk, and an episode
for Franklin Richards: Son of a Genius entitled Tons of Fun. Peter Olson,
Creative Director/Online, Marvel Entertainment said Marvel is aiming to reach
two audiences with this effort: people who are aware of comics/characters mostly
through movies and TV, and of course the long-time dedicated fans. The
comics are offered to consumers in two different formats - either you read them
like a regular comic book, or move frame to frame.
