LATAM MARKET:

Televisa has finally launched the new online content platform in Latin America that it has been talking about for quite some time.  However, it is still unclear whether the television and film content can be sold in the U.S. due to a pending court ruling regarding Univision-Televisa content rights.  Televisa will offer music content on the platform in the U.S. this January.  Users can choose streaming television from Televisa's four national channels (content up to 2 weeks old) for a fee by using the esmas.com platform's media player.  In Mexico City, Cablevision currently offers VOD services and, in February 2007, will also have phone services.

South Florida's WSBS-22 MEGA TV will begin its news coverage of the Venezuelan elections on December 1 at 5p.  Mega TV's Mega News will broadcast the most up-to-date news and information out of Caracas, Venezuela while journalist Maria Elvira Salazar will broadcast a special edition of Polos Opuestos at 8p.  On December 2, Mega TV will continue its political coverage with a live broadcast of the annual Fidel Castro birthday celebrations held in Cuba followed by more Venezuelan electoral coverage on December 3 at 630p. Concluding on December 4, Polos Opuestos will bring viewers a final recap of the events during election weekend and discuss how the people of Venezuela voted in this most controversial election.  And speaking of Mega TV and Polos Opuestos host Maria Elvira Salazar…Maria has scored the first interview with cartoonist Jose Varela since he made headlines last week when he barricaded himself on the 6th floor of The Miami Herald building and declared himself as the publisher of the Spanish daily El Nuevo Herald.

Mexican digital cable operator Cablevision, S.A. de C.V. and TiVo Inc. signed an agreement to distribute the TiVo DVRs and TiVo Service to Cablevision's subscribers in Mexico City.  The DVR service will also include the first Spanish-language version of the TiVo user interface. Cablevision will first begin using TiVo's standalone DVR hardware platform but plans to market DVR and service bundles in 2007.

MEXICANAL has teamed up with airline Aeromexico for the second time this year for a new Christmas giveaway following the network's one-year anniversary giveaway success. The giveaway will give audiences a chance to win two roundtrip airline tickets from any of Aeromexico's 15 U.S. gateways to any destination it serves in Mexico. Check out more info at
www.mexicanal.com . The winner will be announced on December 22 during MEXICANAL's news throughout the day.

AFRICAN AMERICAN MARKET:

TV One will ring in the holiday season with three Saturday sitcom marathons, two new original holiday specials, and one classic (and a partridge in a pear tree). Beginning December 9, the network will present the Merry Merry Marathons of Christmas on three consecutive Saturdays from noon-10p and again from 2-6a with holiday-themed episodes of sitcoms Amen, 227, Good Times, and others. On December 10, TV One will premiere an original special, Tis the Season: A Holiday Celebration, at 8p. This music special hosted by TV One's Jeff Majors includes artists such as Brian McKnight, Kenny Lattimore & Chante Moore, and many others.  A salute to the late Ray Charles, Ray Charles Celebrates a Gospel Christmas, will air at 9p.  It is one of his last taped performances. Chef G. Garvin and his Turn Up the Heat show will air a special at 10p with special guests Mo'Nique.  TV One will repeat the 3-hour lineup on Christmas Eve followed by a Christmas Laugh-A-Thon on Christmas Day.

GAY/LESBIAN MARKET:

Logo will air a behind-the-scenes special based on its original series, Jacob & Joshua: Nemesis Rising, on MTV on December 3 at 1130p. The MTV special The Making of Jacob & Joshua: Nemesis Rising will take a look at the show, follows the evolution of Jacob and Joshua's music throughout the season, and features the music video of the Tracy Young remix of their hit song, Number One in Heaven!  The Logo series follows twin brothers, Jacob and Joshua Miller, as they attempt to make it in the cutthroat music industry and, at the same time, come out publicly about their sexual orientation.  Nemesis' debut album is set to hit the market in February 2007.

INTERNATIONAL MARKET:

Buena Vista International Television-Asia Pacific (BVITV-AP) signed a multi-year movie VOD IPTV agreement with Channel Anytime.  As part of the agreement, the Asian Pacific VOD channel's IPTV customers will gain access to current and library features from Disney, Touchstone and Miramax on the Anytime channel in Australia through TransACT and Regional Internet Australia (RIA), Buddy Broadband in Thailand and TDMC in Taiwan.  BVITV-AP and Channel Anytime will also work together against piracy of BVITV's content.

FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) signed an exclusive international deal with chef Kylie Kwong, in partnership with Singapore production company Sitting In Pictures and the Media Development Authority of Singapore.   The three companies are partnering up to produce the 9x30 series Kylie Kwong: My China (working title). The deal grants FME worldwide television, DVD and ancillary rights (excluding Singapore).  As part of the new inspirational culinary travelogue series, Kylie, a fourth generation Chinese-Australian, will travel back to China.

Carriage in the U.S. is still a problem for Al-Jazeera's new English-language channel, but the channel has signed a new carriage deal in Israel.  Israeli TV provider YES is adding the channel to its offerings as of December 5 and its main Israeli competitor, HOT Television, may also begin offering the English-language channel in the near future.  Both already carry Al-Jazeera's original Arabic-language channel.

Final Call for Submissions: The Federation of Commercial Audiovisual Libraries International Ltd (FOCAL International) has announced the final call for submissions for the 2007 4th FOCAL International Awards in association with AP Archive with December 31 as the submission deadline. This is a global competition looking to recognize productions which have used library archive and stock footage in an imaginative and innovative way. The 2007 awards are to be hosted on May 14, 2007 with 15 award categories. More info at www.focalint.org .

EXECUTIVE MOVES:

Following Michael Grade's sudden resignation as BBC chairman, the public broadcaster named a temporary replacement.  India-born Dr. Chitra Bharucha will become the acting chairperson of the BBC Corporation, the first woman ever in this top BBC position.  She is currently vice-chairperson of the new BBC Trust and will assume the title of acting chair of the Trust.  The BBC Trust will take over the running of the BBC as of January.  Anthony Salz, deputy chairperson of the BBC's board of governors, has temporarily taken over from Michael Grade (the board of governors will be disbanded in January and converted to the BBC Trust).  Anthony will not join the trust and will leave the BBC by the end of 2006.  The search for a new chairperson is expected to take some time.

Fox International upped Kieran Breen to SVP/Marketing from his previous position as marketing director at Fox UK.  He will be responsible for developing marketing strategies of Fox's international releases in addition to managing the company's LA, regional and field marketing operations. Kieran will report to co-presidents Tomas Jegeus and Paul Hanneman.  Elizabeth Kesses has been named as Marketing Director/Fox UK, taking over the position from Kieran.
