Comcast’s sports empire is poised to get bigger. With all eyes on the company’s proposed $45.2 billion takeover of Time Warner Cable, the company stands to inherit, of course, some of sports’ biggest crown jewels in the likes of the Dodgers and Lakers. NBC Universal’s portfolio already consists of NBC Sports, NBC Sports Network, Golf Channel, NBC Olympics, 11 regional sports networks, two regional news networks, NBC Sports Radio and NBCSports.com and the deal would feature the inclusion of TWC Sportsnet and the upcoming Sportsnet LA to the lineup. That gives the company a regional sports foothold ranging from NY to Chicago to LA and virtually locks up the top ten markets.
Facing an old foe in American Idol, NBC’s coverage of the Winter Olympics took a dip but still managed to win the night in viewership, according to Nielsen. NBC’s Wednesday Olympics package last night pulled in 20.8 million viewers overall, off pace from Vancouver’s first Wednesday – one of the biggest nights at the event that saw gold medals for Lindsey Vonn, Shaun White and Shani Davis – which reached 29.3 million.
Meanwhile, NBCSN’s matchup between Arsenal and Manchester United delivered a .49 in overnight Nielsen numbers to the network. That number ties the best weekday Premiere League overnight score of the season.
ESPN announced plans to carry more than 100 Arena Football League games this year as part of its new multi-year agreement. Overall, 11 games will be televised on ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNEWS, while more than 90 games can be seen on ESPN3. Telecasts are set to include ArenaBowl XXVII — which airs Saturday, August 23, at 8p, as well as one Conference Championship and nine regular-season games. The schedule kicks off Sunday, April 27, with a Week 7 matchup between the Iowa Barnstormers and the Philadelphia Soul while ESPN3 offers first game of the season between the VooDoo and Storm on Friday, March 14 at 7:30p.
Bellator MMA analyst Jimmy Smith signed on to a five-year contract extension that will keep the former fighter turned broadcaster on air for the promotion through 2018. Smith joined the company ahead of its second season in 2010 and he has since called 109 events.
FOX Sports announced plans for the return of the FA Cup, UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League in the next two weeks. The action begins with England’s FA Cup competition pitting Chelsea/Manchester City tomorrow at noon while Arsenal takes on Liverpool on Sunday at 10:30a with both matches running on FOX Sports 2. Will Selva hosts this Saturday’s FA Cup coverage with analysts Eric Wynalda and Warren Barton. Overall, more than two dozen contests will take place over the two week span.
CBS Sports hits the weekend with two college basketball games beginning with an ACC match-up on Saturday at 1p between Pittsburgh at North Carolina. The action continues on Sunday at 1p with a Big Ten showdown between Wisconsin/Michigan. Ian Eagle and Greg Anthony handle the call on Saturday while Spero Dedes and Bill Raftery hit the booth on Sunday. Meanwhile, CBS Sports Network’s college basketball coverage this weekend includes four games on Saturday, Feb. 15, highlighted by a Mountain West contest between Air Force and San Diego State at 8p.
Sportsman Channel is launching Bahama Lobster Pirates on Saturday at 8:30p. The series follows six lobster boats during the first 30 days of lobster season with $100 million up for grabs at the end of the season.
With the Celtics and Bruins on break, CSN New England is launching Spring Training coverage for the Red Sox, with programming set to launch on Saturday. As part of the channel’s coverage, five special episodes of The Baseball Show presented by Twin River Casino will air in primetime, also beginning Saturday at 7p. In addition, Spring Training coverage will be featured in all episodes of Chevrolet SportsNet Central, Arbella Early Edition, Town Fair Tire Sports Tonight, and Sports Sunday.

The NBA announced that Kumho Tire entered a new multiyear marketing partnership with the league that will make Kumho Tire the official tire of the NBA and NBA Development League in the U.S. and South Korea. The deal marks the first official tire partnership for both leagues and is Kumho Tire’s first partnership with a U.S. sports league. The agreement will deliver Kumho Tire will receive branding during NBA All-Star in New Orleans, with the company serving as the presenting partner of the NBA D-League All-Star Game.
AutoTrader.com is hitting NASCAR via a deal to join Team Penske in 2014 with sponsorship of the No. 22 Ford Fusion and driver Joey Logano in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. The deal will see AutoTrader.com become a season-long associate sponsor on the No. 22 team and serve as the car’s primary sponsor for the July 13 race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway (NHMS) with a special AutoTrader.com livery.
Speaking of NASCAR, Cotton Incorporated announced a denim recycling challenge for NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series teams that will be competing at the Blue Jeans Go Green 200 presented by Cotton, The Fabric of Our Lives NASCAR Nationwide Series race weekend at Phoenix International Raceway on Saturday, March 1. The program will see teams encouraged to recycle old denim in Blue Jeans Go Green bins located in team offices. In addition, Phoenix International Raceway will offer provide a 20% discount on tickets to the November 2014 PIR NASCAR Nationwide Series race to fans that recycle denim during the Spring race weekend.
FOX Sports Supports announced its latest partnerships, supporting the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and Stand Up To Cancer through 2015. During this time, FOX Sports will focus its resources toward these two organizations in campaigns that span all FOX Sports assets and premier events beginning with the Daytona 500 this month. FOX Sports Supports will also support several other initiatives throughout the year in 2014, including 21st Century Fox’s partnership with the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games; AYSO’s monumental 50th anniversary; Movember’s month-long men’s health campaign; and a variety of military initiatives that began at Super Bowl XLVIII with the U.S. Army’s Gold Star Pins awareness campaign.
NeuLion, Inc. revealed that its TV Everywhere Platform is being used to power live Olympic streaming experiences in China and Portugal. China’s CNTV and NeuLion will see the newest addition to CNTV 5+ VIP feature coverage of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi including exclusive coverage of hockey games as well as all Team China games throughout the Olympics. Meanwhile, Sport TV, the top sports network in Portugal, will use its Sport TV Multiscreen service, powered by NeuLion, to offer subscribers to its premium sports HD multi-screen package authenticated access to live Olympic action on multiple devices.
Rogers Media appointed Gord Cutler as Senior Vice President of NHL Production, starting February 18 where he will be charged with on-air production elements of Sportsnet’s NHL coverage on all platforms, including national and regional games, all playoff games and the Stanley Cup Final, special events and non-game events, and studio broadcasts, to deliver best-in-class hockey experiences to fans across Canada.
