NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

Comcast struck a deal yesterday with Warner Bros. to sell its titles through Xfinity On Demand. Xfinity was the first U.S. pay-TV provider to sell content to its customers for online streaming, and currently offers titles from Fox, Lionsgate and NBCUniversal in its digital store.

CONTENT MEDIA

My Damn Channel premiered the first episode of its new new sitcom, We Got Next, which follows a group of four unlikely members of a basketball team. The show features The Big Bang Theory‘s Lance Barber and The Game‘s Bumper Robinson; guest stars include Veep‘s Matt Walsh and Friends with BenefitsCatherine Reitman. The half-hour show will be available every Tuesday on MyDamnChannel.com and its YouTube channel. “We’re finally at the moment so many digital pioneers longed for, with some of the best new original programming premiering online,” My Damn Channel CEO and Founder Rob Barnett told Cynopsis.

Amazon’s original series Alpha House will see a second season, show star John Goodman confirmed yesterday at the London premiere of Monuments Men. Goodman added that the cast will start filming in July.

Maker Studios has sealed a deal with Jackass star Steve-O, aka Stephan Glover, to manage his YouTube channel (two million subscribers), and to co-create original prank and stunt programming. Maker Studios recently signed with other big partners, such as will.i.am and with Warner Bros.

Xbox Entertainment Studios is developing an original series called Street Dreams, based on the life of the rapper Nas (Illmatic). The series is written and directed by Warm Bodies and 50/50‘s Jonathan Levine. Nas will write the music.

MOBILE GAMING + APPS

The developers of iTunes chart-topping app Elf Yourself launched Valentine Yourself yesterday. The free personalized app allows users to upload pictures from Facebook or from a phone starring their faces in a silly, dancing journey throughout New York City. 

TECHNOLOGY

Apple has plans to unveil a new Apple TV set-top box in April, sources tell Bloomberg, ready for retail by the holiday season. The company is reportedly in talks with Time Warner Cable and other partners to add video content.

RESEARCH

Sports and live events are the top TV Everywhere online streams, according to the Adobe Digital Video Index analysis of Q4. Viewing sports via online video has increased 640 percent year-over-year, compared to 440 percent growth in overall video streams. The study also showed that a quarter of all sports content is now viewed on mobile devices, based on 22.5 billion online video streams. Adobe Director of Product Marketing for Video Solutions Campbell Foster said live event streaming (which includes sporting events) is generally on the increase – due to the exclusive nature of the content.

EXEC MOVES

ComScore‘s current President, Surge Matta, is now CEO. Matta will take over current co-founder and CEO Magid Abraham‘s role, and Abraham will become Executive Chairman of the board of directors. Current executive chairman and co-founder Gian Fulgoni becomes Chairman Emeritus.

Fastlane Communications is opening a new Sports & Entertainment branch, focused on helping clients with digital marketing, social public relations, event marketing, and TV and digital production. Ed Manetta, a prior consultant with Hypertechnology Partners, will lead Sports & Entertainment.

Workman Entertainment + PR has rebranded: the new Workman Group Communications clients include Man Made Music, Mibblio and Lippincott.

DIGITAL SPOTLIGHT OF THE DAY

A recent release from YouTube channel Veritasium (its slogan is “an element of truth”) is a video called Facebook Fraud that garnered a whopping one million views in just two days. The video claims that purchasing Facebook ads are a waste of money, because the “likes” and page fans are from “click farm” fraud bots – and not from actual engaged consumers. However, an analysis from Facebook marketing blogger Jon Loomer battles back that the basic argument is based on results from 2012, and that FB’s ad feature set has changed significantly since then.
