NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

Cable news net HLN, known for its coverage of high-profile crime cases, is rebranding as “the first TV network for the social media generation,” announced its president, Albie Hecht, on Monday. “Just as MTV was adopted by a disconnected target audience that was underserved by television, HLN will be the first TV home to embrace the social media generation.” The plan: curate trending news and viral events across all platforms, with headlines “ripped from the most ‘plugged-in’ sites and blogs.”

CONTENT MEDIA

Disney Interactive and Google teamed up to create a short animated film in time for Valentine’s Day called Blank: A Vinylmation Love Story. The 38-minute stop-motion flick is available only on Google Play, and tells the story of a Vinylmation toy finding his soul mate. Google is also making digital Valentine’s greetings derived from the film at BlankMovie.WithGoogle.com. After sharing, a visitor can unlock a second film, Cranes in Love, created exclusively for Google users.

On the heels of deals for CBS‘s Elementary and Blue Bloods, Hulu Plus expanded its non-exclusive licensing agreement with CBS Corp. to include 2600 episodes of other shows, including Undercover Boss, Everybody Loves Raymond, Ghost Whisperer and 7th Heaven. Total number of CBS eps that will be available for Hulu Plus subscribers: 5300. Also, Hulu Original Series with the Hulu Kids platform announced it has made its first acquisition with the Jim Henson Company show, Doozers.

Twitch, the live streaming network of video game play, now has more than one million different users broadcasting on its platform each month during prime time hours. According to The Verge, a recent study from DeepField shows that Twitch curates more U.S. web traffic produced by companies’ networks than Hulu (1.7 percent), Facebook (1.5 percent) and Amazon (1.2 percent). However, Twitch is still just at 1.8 percent, which is a ways behind Apple (4.3 percent), Google (22 percent) and Netflix (32 percent). The rise is partially due to a new Twitch platform, which is a home console system. Before the release of the newest Playstation, Twitch was for PC gamers only; now 20 percent of broadcasters are now coming from Playstation 4.

MOBILE GAMING + APPS

Disappointed fans of the surprise hit mobile game Flappy Birds need not blame Nintendo for the creator abruptly removing the app from stores on Sunday. In a statement to the Wall Street Journal, Nintendo spokesman Tasuhiro Minagawa said the company had no qualms about the game despite its nearly identical appearance to Super Mario Bros. The app had hit number one on iTunes and Google Play‘s free mobile games lists, was reportedly was raking in $50,000 a day from advertising revenue.

ADVERTISING

The Interactive Advertising Bureau announced a new definition of advertising engagement and identified core metrics for digital and legacy ad engagement across platforms. Engagement has been defined as “consumer advertising activities and experiments – cognitive, emotional and behavioral/physical that will have a positive impact on Brand.”

SOCIAL MEDIA

Twitter released new research showing the effects of the social site while users watched TV. Called Twitter x TV, the findings showed:

  • TV viewers tuned away from ads 17 percent of the time, while Twitter x TV users did so eight percent of the time.
  • 40 percent of TV-only viewers recalled ads, when 53 percent of Twitter x TV users did so.
  • There was a seven percent lift in brand favorability for TV-only viewers, compared to 18 percent lift for Twitter X TV users.
  • There was a 16 percent lift in purchase intent from TV-only viewers, and 30 percent lift from Twitter x TV users.

… that being said, Twitter also started tracking daily tweeting data regarding the Sochi Winter Olympics with #Sochi2014. Here are stats from Day 5 of the games:

  • Tweets since start of the Olympics: 10.1 million tweets
