CES 2014

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings announced that the second season of House of Cards will be available to stream in 4K on LG’s 4K televisions when it premieres on Feb 14. The TV itself will cost around $3000. Vizio will be producing its own line of 4K TVs from 50-70 inches (price not yet available) and Polaroid’s 4K TV set will go for a relatively affordable $1000…

… The 4K quality isn’t just for TVs. Toshiba introduced the first 4K laptop yesterday. Both of the 15-inch laptops include Windows 8.1, but the Satellite p50t model also features a touch screen. The laptops will be available in mid-2014…

… YouTube has high hopes for that users will soon be able to view its content on television. Currently, 40% of viewing is over mobile devices. “TV usage is small; we just launched last year. But it will be trending close to mobile in next five years,” said Francisco Varela, Global Director of Platform Partnerships at YouTube. Varela, speaking on the Digital Hollywood panel called “Multi-Screen Universe: TV, Tablets, Broadband, Smartphones and IPTV,” emphasized the need for speed. “Regardless of the device, we need to be able to deliver video quickly,” he said…

… Roku introduced its first set of Smart TVs, called the Roku TV. The product will launch with the third and fifth largest TV manufacturers TCL and Hisense, and will be available in the fall, in 32 to 55 inch sizes. Pricing is yet to be announced…

Dish Network introduced Super Joey at the Consumer Electronics Show, an improvement on the 2012 original set top box that, working with the Hopper DVR, can record eight shows at once (up from six). The company also announced Wireless Joey, “ideal for rooms without coaxial cable”…

… What’s Trending is bringing live daily coverage of the CES show floor from 1-2 p.m. today through the end of the week on its YouTube channel. Tech YT stars like Patrick Norton from Tekzilla, Lamarr Wilson, Unbox Therapy, SoldierKnowsBest and celebrities such as Nick Cannon and Maria Menounos will join the coverage at the Samsung Smart Lounge (they probably won’t mention yesterday’s Michael Bay walk-out). YT channel BlackNerdComedy stars will host the daily show. And of course, we will be bringing you daily updates as well right here at Cynopsis Digital.

Brightcove has acquired Unicorn Media for $49 million. The merger will expand its cloud-based video ad insertion technology further into mobile devices, in order to removes any issues around buffering and ad delays as a video switches from programming content to ads. Brightcove also released its expectations for Q4 2013 revenue, which should be around $30 million.

Video and TV discovery engine Jinni is partnering up with video streaming and analytics company Ooyala. Ooyala collects more than two billion analytics daily from consumers watching video on Ooyala-powered players, and will work with Jinni’s established search engine to enhance entertainment recommendations.


Global action sports channel Network A, a division of Bedrocket, announced new and returning original programming for NetworkA.com. Alana: Surfer Girl had its third season premiere yesterday, generating eight million views on its first day. Every Third Thursday will air monthly on every third Thursday (natch) through May. News series Drift Garage premieres Jan. 20 with four episodes, along with “Switchfoot’s ‘Fading West’ Behind-the-Scenes” with four new episodes to launch on Jan. 14.

FX is previewing the pilot of animated comedy Chozen, about a rapper on a quest for redemption, through the FXNOW app for Xbox One. Comedy debuts on FX Monday, January 13 at 10:30p.


Samsung Smart TV owners will be able to buy the clothes right off of David Beckham‘s back, thanks to H&M’s Super Bowl XLVII 30-second ad. Delivery Agent is behind the “t-commerce” advertising platform being used in the ad, and will be presenting an early preview of the technology at CES this week.


Pandora will roll out ads within the next few months, specifically meant to play while listening to the Internet radio service in the car. The Verge reports the ads will be both 15 and 30 seconds from the likes of Ford, State Farm and Taco Bell. The feature will be available in the 130 car models that include Pandora as well as other devices that can be accessed in a vehicle.

Microsoft revealed it has sold more than three million Xbox One consoles at the end of 2013. Xbox’s Corporate Vice President of Marketing of Strategy and Business Yusuf Mehdi explained in a blog post that this figure includes sales in more than 13 countries since the product’s launch just six weeks ago. Sony says it sold 2.1 million PS4 consoles in early December, but has not announced a recent update on sales. Forbes points out that the Xbox has a history of stronger U.S. performance than Sony, which thrives more in Asia.


BlackBerry has hired Ron louks as its new Head for Loss-Making Devices Business. Louks was previously with OpenNMS Group where he served as Chief Executive Officer, but also has a background in HTC Corp’s American and Sony Ericsson (now part of Sony Corp).

Consumer tech publisher Digital Trends announced Andrew Budkofsky as its new Executive Vice President of Sales and Partnerships. Previously, he was Executive Vice President of Sales and Partnerships at Break Media since 2007.
